Carter was in the navy. I doubt they'll ever name an aircraft carrier after him though. |

Out of 44 Presidents. 32 have served in the armed forces. Fifteen were Army or army reserve. Nine were in state militias. Six were Navy or navy reserve. Two were continental army. None were marines. The ones who did no military service of any kind were John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Grover Cleveland, William Taft, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Bill Clinton and Barak Obama... I learned this from the American Legion on a veterans day a couple of years ago |

No. CinC is a civilian position, just like SecNav, etc. Military people report to them, but they are not in the military. |

It was a LOT easier to remember the ones who did not serve than the ones that did Not 100 percent sure about how many served in the army/navy/militias. But sure about the two from the continental army |
