Yeah the rust. When these things were new I was a teenager living in NW Pa. Some of these, and a few brand new Chevy trucks came into the body shop I worked at to have rocker panels and quarter panels replaced because they were rusted through before they even got to the dealerships. Amazing.

Given that though, this one ain't too bad. It came with rust repair panels for the rear wheel wells, and if I get a truck bed floor, and patch the floor under the seats, it should be nearly rust free.(I have often fixed worse)

It has the original 'Cornbinder 345 truck V8 with at T18 four speed. Whom ever had it took the full top off. It has a new roll bar with a bikini top, a new gas tank, and a new windshield even. They said it belonged to an older gent who passed on a few months back and the family was cleaning out the garage.

I looked up the specs on it. When new they touted 9.3 mpg, weighing in at 3900+ pounds.

So far it doesn't leak any mechanical juices, oh, and it only has 63,000 miles on it!

The guy toting it was funny. He said if I wasn't driving a Corvette when I flagged them down he would not have stopped. He has a Vette also. Membership has it privileges!

I broke my Jeep.

A nut fell off from the steering shaft/knuckle clamp that I built for it. Crap. Now I am going to have to replace the nut and use thread locker on it.

You'd think an inch of clay/mud would lock a nut on a bolt! Ya sure can't get anything else off without washing it and lubricating the threads.

Hey Mark!! did you buy that Wagoneer?

The one I had years ago was probably the closest thing to the smooth ride of a modern Suburban.

Maybe he sold it already.

I played with the Scout a little a couple of days ago. NOT IN THE MUD though, no sense in trying with worn out 31's.

I am amazed at the difference between this and the Jeep. Both have tons of torque, the jeep has long soft suspension and the Scout stock much stiffer limited travel stuff.

The weight of the Scout has it pull and climb(on dry stuff)steep hills like a dozer. The Jeep will tend to spin and bounce if it gets too steep(whatever that could be), even dry. 3900 pounds vs 2300 pounds(before added mud). Big difference.

I'd bet the Scout would just find the bottom of the mud pit and need help out of the deep soft bottom sucking wet clay like my son's Blazer did.

Why yes I did. I put a battery to it, checked the juices, got it fired up, and I have been driving it around the place. I've been using it to tow the boat around, moving the small trailers, toting trash, and checking the fences. Kind of giving the tractor a break. Nearly everything but the mud pit.....no mud pit for the Scout.

It is one of those vehicles that the more you run it, the better it runs.It is begging to go down the road, but I don't have the title yet.

I hope you have a great time at the Williamsburg event. You need to post up some pictures. If my Jeep wasn't over qualified.....

Thanks Mees.....we have so much diversity in the outside fun arts here in East Tennessee.

At least with the front bumper stuck in the bank and the rear tires on firm mud it won't sink. If it were setting in those tracks directly, it would sink about a foot.

My son is going to help get it out Sunday.....hope it doesn't rain!

Looks like you are a weekend away from running .....unless you want a show truck.....but then a show Jeep would never hit the mud.....would it??!!?

When I originally built my CJ7, some fourteen years or so ago, I owned an auto body shop and spent $7000 not including the cost of the Jeep or the engine, making it look like a shiny new stock but lifted CJ. New seats, top, roll cage, base /clear paint, it was pretty.

First day out on the trails I sunk it up to the door openings in a mud hole and got it as muddy as it is now. Perhaps some of the money was wasted on the making of the perfect dent free body or even more so on the wet sanded and buffed clear coat.

No the cj5 is not gonna be a show truck ,only want to repair a couple of rust holes and one big dent in rear fender.
Also want the underside sand blasted and painted.
But leave the out-side of the body how it is now.
Still have enough welding to do on the frame.
and also want to replace the beatup stock axles for
a dana 60 front and rear ,and so on

This is my daily driven show truck,

Well, I haven't been around much lately and I know I mentioned ages ago in this thread that I wanted an XJ someday... turns out today is that day! I just got back from picking up my first Jeep! 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport.

The good:
-Only 77,500 miles!
-Nice color
-Clean interior
-Nice paint
-Seems to run good so far
-Has a Chrysler 8.25 rearend, which was a 29-spline that year, which I've read is comparable to a Dana 44.
-The bulletproof part time 4x4 works great - already took it through the weeds for kicks!

The bad:
-At first glance, it looks really nice, but there's some very poorly done rust repair in both rockers and the pass front door. May decide to redo it soon.
-Front bumper is a little tweaked, good reason to upgrade : )
-Has a transmission leak, but I think it's just the cooler line fitting going into the trans case and not the line itself.
-Tires need balancing.
-There's some kind of rattling noise from the shifter area - no idea what it could be. It sounds like a single marble being bounced around - def not exhaust related. ***EDIT*** just read up on this and diagnosed that it is the transfer case lever bushing. There's a TSB for it, looks involved, may just deal with the noise haha.

The ugly:
I have a sneaking suspicion that this *might* be a flood car, but the paperwork is spotless and the physical evidence is spotty at best. That's what I get for buying a truck in the dark, I guess.

No real plans for it yet except to fix the trans leak. Got this as a winter car/utility vehicle, so use will be seasonal and when I want something nice to drive, you may notice the brand new Porsche in the pictures. If the funds become available, I'd consider some beefy bumpers and a mild lift, but I don't plan on building a rig... but who knows!

Enjoy the pics:

I've been having some strange thunking noise coming from under the Jeep. Put it up on jack stands when I got home and both front wheels had some play. GREAT!! I have found the source of said noise. Replace the wheel bearings..... NOPE.. Noise is still there but I got new front wheel bearings!! WOOT!!... They needed replaced anyway... I think it might be the rear drive shaft. On to that tomorrow...

I would have to work on my Jeep for a week before it could survive a 20 mile trip to town and back on the highway! Bearings, U joints, calipers, bushings, bracketry repair/welding, lubrication stuff, wipers, light stuff, shocks, the list goes on......but if you wanna go off roading in the mud.....gimmy just a couple of hours!

The ball cup in the center of the cardan joint is toast.
Went to the local driveshaft repair joint to drop it off. I asked if the would show me how to get the bearing out. To my surprise he took me into the shop and showed me how to break it down.
Pretty cool if you ask me. He made the statement that I should be able to do it myself next time. That's one to keep and loose my business all at the same time....

That looks like half of a CV joint. When you are ready to go off road only those go away for a single joint. Not as smooth on the road, but less to break and easier to fix on the trail.

I made square tube drive shafts for mine. They are much further up the heavy duty scale and can telescope up to 14" if they want to. Just some more awesomeness you are headed towards! Go ahead.....look at the light in the tunnel.....it's coming right at you!
