The EBR store says it's not legal for street use. Is that just a DOT certification issue?

this has probably been addressed on badweb before, but the search engine currently isn't working for me.

Wheels DO need DOT test and approval - same as slicks. Can't just cut grooves in slicks and run them on the street.

That being said, I know LOTS of guys/gals running composite, forged, cast racing wheels without DOT approval. Basically, you're pretty safe to assume that if you're pulled over, you're not going to have an inspection that'll catch non-DOT stamped wheels.

(now I'll have to go look at my streetbikes to see if they even HAVE DOT marks)

DOT certification is certainly one issue. I seem to remember an article/discussion somewhere talking about one problem with magnesium wheels. They may not be as 'durable' as other wheels, being more susceptible to damage and breaking when hitting sharp edged bumps. As often as racing bits get inspected, not a problem. For street use, might be a concern.

What AK said. On the track, it's unlikely you'll hit a pothole or any other similar problem, on the street, oh yeah. Magnesium wheels are more "brittle" than street legal wheels, and I'd not trade the weight gain for that risk.

You don't want to use a Mg wheel on the street.

1190rs wheels are cast in a special way so that the metal in the rim is more ductile than the metal in the spokes. Best of both worlds, and dot legal. Just one of the many special qualities of the 1190rs
