By the way . . . . that "knows where you are" may not have trickled out to the rest of America yet.

Here . . .we routinely pass a tripod on the side of the road as we enter the freeway. It has two cameras mounted upon it and simultaneously photographs our faces and license plates and assesses a "threat index" as you approach Manhattan by tunnel or bridge.

If . . .for example. . . one of you were to drive my car into town on a given day, . . it'd be logged as an anomaly. A very low level one, but it'd be on the system.

I'm not unaware that by the time I get to the top of the on ramp someone knows my weight, how often I have sex, ifI've been the victim of domestic violence and when my YMCA membership expires.

How ya'll like the IRS having this information AND the ability to empty your bank account without notice or due process?

"The land of the free?" . . . as free as they want you to be these days.

Great to see you back, Court!

It's doubly disappointing when you think back and consider that this law hinged on Chief Justice Roberts, and he completely pussed out.

It sure didn't take long for the first breach of security of peoples private information. It didn't even take a hacker, just an incompetent government employee. EDIT: I apologize for being redundant.

I figure about 6 months before work dumps us all on Obamacare. I'd better get my medical stuff done first, since I'll no doubt be on the "let him die" list, if only for my opinions on our Alleged President on this board. ( I suspect that previous line alone is enough )

I'm trying to decide if I should empty my 401k and use the money to pay off the mortgage.

Why? 2 reasons, both horribly paranoid.

1. it would "save" me $200,000. Technically I get that back in tax law, but that mortgage interest deduction is threatened by Congress. Yes, at first it's "only the rich" who get the deduction removed, but tax hikes like this sold on a class envy basis always get paid by the "normal" people.

2. Congress is making noises about stealing the money I saved for 20+ years and doling it back out to me as they see fit. ( "Socializing/nationalizing" IRA's like they did Student Loans. )

Now both "reasons" are paranoid delusions according to the people who deny they have "death panels" in Obamacare. ( which, if you squint just right is true. The "death panel" funding is held up in congress, and actual humans will just determine the parameters for the computer program that will tell you to go away and die )

What do you guys think?

should 45- to 62 percent seem too small - be thankful we (the IRS) don't take it all ....

don't forget this bill gives them direct access to your bank account

Read the Bill - you know the Democrat that signed YES to it didn't.

I don't know about the facebook post, but those are the "introductory" fines for individuals. They will Change. ( and unless you give up legal work, you cannot avoid paying them. )

Business fines are much higher.

Oddly, cheaper than Obamacare.

Like it was designed to take over. Like they said it was.

I can't tell you exactly where it is, but it's well established that the IRS is the enforcement agency in charge of ObamaDontCare. They not only have access to your bank accounts, but also your paycheck and your house.

The $95 fine is only true if you only make $10,000 per year. The actual fine is $95 or 1% of income, whichever is ***greater***.

And remember, if you pay the fine, you just pay the fine, you *still* don't have insurance and you will still have to pay for medical costs out of pocket.

The only way this law solves any problem is if those fines get cranked up so high that it is cheaper to buy insurance, and millions of young healthy adults who weren't buying insurance now buy it. The problem is, many that didn't have it didn't have it because they really couldn't afford it before anyway, and now with the forced risk pooling the coverage they couldn't afford before is now going to cost more anyway.

This is where the law is logically broken (aside from the dubious constitutional foundations of it)... It tries to supply a problem of "simply not enough money" by legally mandating "do it anyway". The law is passed, but there is still not enough money.

>>>>Right, and the new federally-mandated sexual questions, too. That provision ought to be a chuckle.

It ought to. And, your question has me asking questions. I heard about it, not in the news but, from 2 doctors who are starting to ask.

After I read your question, I started doing some digging. I can find credible sources that say it's a "requirement" and credible sources who say it's not.

I, on Columbia University letterhead (under the guise of research), have written folks of each of the opposing views and ask that they provide me with the source of the requirement.

If it is not required, it'd be good for someone to let doctors know as I know, at least 2 in NYC, who are starting to ask.

My answer, of course, would be the same as it would be to the question about firearm ownership . . . "it'd none of your damn business".

Both sides of the argument to follow as, like most discussion surrounding the controversial law, they are skewed resulting from the passion of the writers.

A couple on polar opposite ends of the continuum.

http://www.factcheck.org/2013/10/sex-questions-fro m-your-doctor/

As best, with what I have read now, I can tell is that the "suggestion" the questions be asked resulted from the EHR, not the ACA as a way to receive incentive payments.

I may have to do what so few have done, including Congress and The President (both notably EXEMPT from this travesty) have failed to do and that is break down and read the damn thing.

One question that haunts me . . . . Who ACTUALLY WROTE the Affordable Care Act?

It damn sure wasn't President Obama, I know some of this faculty folks at Columbia and I've read portions of his writing from his various books. Once you get past the bragging about "never going to class" so he had time to smoke dope . . . the writing is wanting.

It surprises me that we've elected leaders that would make it past the first round in being hired most places.

I'll say it again . . . . figure out a way to avail yourself to some "federal stimulus $$$" and go concierge. I'm certain, in all cases, I can cut a better deal with Doctors that any federal employee. I saved $17,000.01 last week alone.

Get smart or prepare to board the stupid wagon . . . .pickin' up passengers along the way.

A Collective Effort, as it's been sitting in the desk of Pelosi & co. for a while, but if you have to point at one man...

It's entirely possible that the Dr. has been unfairly picked on. He's been a "social" and "political" doctor all his career, and claims that statements about his views on killing off the useless and old are distortions of common sense, but not PC statements he has made.

It's also possible that his Brother has done an excellent job as mayor, and his boss in the White House is misunderstood.

However, if I was making bets............

I suspect that will happen. The various reports from papers, like the Washington Post, seem to indicate that lots of folks have played on the website but "almost no one" has actually signed up.

quote:

A spokesman for one major Blue Cross Blue Shield plan in a southern state said that, as of Wednesday afternoon, it had not received word from federal health officials of any customers who had completed enrollment in the plan — even though a local news outlet had reported about a man who thought he had signed up.

Asking the administration is fruitless . . .

From "Mr. Transparency" . . .

quote:

But administration officials, for a second day, declined to disclose how many people actually had enrolled and where in the country they live.

I think, quite frankly, we own that information collectively.

About the only thing the first couple of days seems to have proven it that the security of the information is a "work in progress".

I went to the Kaiser Subsidy calculator and entered data for a non-smoking single mother of two in Seattle earning $20,000/year (102% poverty level), similar to the woman in the Breitbart "story" who claimed to need an extra $3,000 for exchange coverage.

I would take those Facebook "anecdotes" with a massive grain of salt.

I would take healthcare.gov with a grain of salt too. They've admitted that it often provides incorrect information. That's if you are lucky enough to live in a state where it works at all. Interesting the assumptions you make about someone you've never met to prove them to be a liar though. What do you know about her medical history and health risks? The law prohibits using that to deny coverage, but it doesn't prevent them from charging accordingly, at least not that I've heard of. Perhaps you could cite the portion that does as long as you have it handy on your computer.

Looks like even when someone actually gets through the process on healthcare.gov, and they think that they have secured insurance for next year, they only have a 1% chance that the insurance company actually gets the required information to insure them. That is an astoundingly poor success rate, even for a government program. Train wreck doesn't begin to describe this turd. This is even being reported by NBC!

http://www.cnbc.com/id/101087965

quote:

As few as 1 in 100 applications on the federal exchange contains enough information to enroll the applicant in a plan, several insurance industry sources told CNBC on Friday. Some of the problems involve how the exchange's software collects and verifies an applicant's data.

"It is extraordinary that these systems weren't ready," said Sumit Nijhawan, CEO of Infogix, which handles data integrity issues for major insurers including WellPoint and Cigna, as well as multiple Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliates.

Experts said that if Healthcare.gov's success rate doesn't improve within the next month or so, federal officials could face a situation in January in which relatively large numbers of people believe they have coverage starting that month, but whose enrollment applications are have not been processed.
...
The federal exchange itself may have to seek that data from enrollees.

And that extra work could significantly burden a system already bogged down by high numbers of people trying to view prices and enrollment forms on Healthcare.gov.
...
"One hundred people submit their application, one of them goes all the way through the processing ... a big chunk of them are being held," Koritala said. "They need to get more clarifying information."

He blamed the exchange's software, which is allowing too many people to finish the process online without making sure they provide answers needed by the insurers processing the applications.
...
"This is not a traffic issue," Mendelson said. "Right now, the systems aren't working."
...
"If we continue to see these issues continue though the next three or four weeks there's a lot of concern about how many people will have effective coverage by Jan. 1," said Dan Schuyler, director of the consultant Leavitt Partners.

Having a background in the IT field, and having worked on some fairly large projects, I would say that the likely hood of getting things ironed out in the next few months are about as low as the likelihood of the current system working to get you insurance.
