I love the CZ75b. Try one I don't think I've ever fired a better 9mm. I believe the barrel is 4.7 |

i just picked up a used Ruger P 94 9mm for under $300 and love it. Only bad words i've read about the gun is that some think its 'ugly', and of course its hefty for CC. But supposedly reliable as an anvil and they're very affordable |

Don't get your girl a "little gun" just because she may be smaller than you. Bad move. Small guns have more recoil and muzzle flip given the same load.
My fiancee, on our second date, fired about 15 magazines out of a full sized 1911 and never complained once. She's just under 5' and her fingers come out to about my first knuckle (from my palm) when we line up our hands.
Seriously... A normal sized gun is the right choice for her. She has a big effing purse I'm sure... She can fit 10 full sized handguns in there. |

i personally wouldn't be too concerned with other gun snobs turning their nose up at whatever i'm shooting that day. you are gonna catch crap for picking 9mm (a caliber suitable for women and small children) vs 45ACP (a man's caliber/because shooting twice is silly/ because they don't make a .46)
they can turn their noses up at me and my scores after we run an IDPA match together.
i don't turn up my nose at a guy on a 250 ninja, cuz he might be able to lap me on my super expensive, top of the line, name brand bike with ABS, traction control, wheelie control all the bells and whistles.
just because someone paid 4 times what an other person paid for his gun doesn't make the bullets fly directly to center of mass.
.40 S&W is actually L O N G E R than a 9x19 parabellum. both by overall measurements and when comparing casing length. it might look shorter because the nose of the bullet is flat.

get your self into a gun show so you can pick up multiple models, sizes and versions then find a range or a wealthy friend that will let you try multiple guns before you blow such a large stack of moolah on a handgun. |

A smart choice? not IMHO, mostly because of ammo availability, more of a collectors, enthusiasts toy. Like the RD400, perhaps not the best only bike, but neat to have in the garage to play with.
I've read many studies on ammo effectiveness, some based on math & ballistic tests, some on police & medical reports. "the best stopper" is a moving target, and the concepts behind stopping power isn't really for polite company.
Since medical details make many people squeamish, ( including me  ) I'll just say that the reputations of different calibers in the past are both deserved, and obsolete.
The 9mm with military ball ( full metal jacket, non expanding ) over penetrates to a dangerous degree, and lacks stopping power.
That's not true with modern ammo.
Modern expanding bullets change that, partly thanks to the FBI's current scientific approach to ammo, with an eye towards arming their agents against likely threats, and looks well thought out to me.
The FBI did a long hard look late last century at what their agents carried after a disastrous shootout in Miami some years ago, then adopted the 10mm.
The 10mm was meant to deliver .45 stopping power at extended ranges. It delivers, and may be one of the best deer/boar rounds ever, but kicked too much, for many, and was uneven in results when first adopted. The FBI went to a 10mm "lite" round with reduced power, but it was still a .45 sized length. ( so .45 sized magazine/handle )
S&W saw a market & made the .40 S&W, which is aprox 9mm ( luger/parabellum/nato ) in length, so it fits in that size frame, and is loaded to approx. the 10mm "lite" FBI power. Very popular, very effective.
I dunno, maybe it's because we're "Americans" and all think a bit like Tim "the toolman" Taylor. ( grunt, grunt )
9mm is good enough, better than most, and until the hording craze of the last year or so, the cheapest to practice with of the centerfire pistol rounds. ( .22LR still is great for practice and small game. )

.40's are awesome... But quite loud for some reason. I had a full sized HK USP .40 for a long time and it was the loudest side arm I've ever used for sure. I tried all kinds of ammo and it was all loud. I think I settled on 155 because it just worked best. |

At the toy store today I noticed a Sig Sauer P938 and asked to fondle it. Very similar to a 1911 in many ways, but tiny, in a good way. Designed to fire 9mm. Only a 3 inch barrel. I forget the reason for wanting a 4 inch barrel from the OP. Grip was a good size for my sausage fingers, with 2 solid fingers of length below the trigger guard, but no more. They told me it's supposed to be a pretty mild recoil for a 9mm of that size. It might be worth renting one if possible if seriously considering one. The small size is what I found appealing though. This would be a very easy piece to conceal. Built by Sig Sauer, so I would have great faith in it's quality. I think their price was $689.

I've shot all the 938's and by far and away, the extreme was the nicest. The grips are amazing for helping manage recoil. (Pic is the 238, but it looks exactly like the 9)

I have a Kimber CarryII that I like a lot but it sucks for daily carry if you a) fix cars and b) your employer doesn't allow carry, so I have a S&W J frame to carry when I need to be discreet. A S&W model 39 or M&P 9 is a good choice for someone with smaller hands and recoil sensitive. The M&P comes with three different backstraps and they make a noticeable difference in reach to the trigger.
Speaking of M&P's the one I own will be taking over as the go to gun for carry when not working as soon as it's new holster is delivered, being a lefty sucks some days.
I can carry over twice as many rounds and as someone else said modern 9mm SD ammo is just as good as any .45 ammo today and to be honest if I were going somewhere I knew I'd need a gun I'd stay home or if that wasn't an option I'd bring a rifle because gunfights suck and if I have to be in one I want something with lots more kinetic energy than a handgun round. |

Oh and several companies including STI make 1911's in 40 S&W but if I was in the market (which I am) for an alt caliber in a 1911 it would probably be a .38 Super. Equivalent to a .357 magnum as far as energy goes, good to great accuracy and a couple extra rounds on tap...twelve extra if you go with a doublestack frame from STI and then there is the cool factor of a semi obsolete caliber, Taurus, Colt, Springfield Armory,Wilson, Nighthawk, STI, SVI, RIA and probably a few more chamber something in that caliber.
