The problem is that people see Sporties around all the time. The RE would be much more rare. It's funny to park the Guzzi for lunch, and when you come out there's a bunch of HD riders checking it out. They would walk right by another Sporty without a second look. The RE will likely catch the attention of all but the most jaded riders. What that is worth, is of course, a very individual thing. I understand what you are saying, and while most people would find it crazy to dump $3,500 into a bicycle, at a point in time it made sense to me. I'm sure that to some, the price of the RE is not an obstacle.

Price here in the UK is GBP5499 for the fully equipped version (alloy rims, bar end mirrors, loud pipe etc). The 883 iron is at least GBP1000 more than that, then you need to spend the same again making it into a respectable road bike (suspension, brakes, exhaust, fuelling etc).

I'd still pick the Enfield.

I have wanted Royal Enfield Bullet 500 with the Sidecar since the late 90's.
The Dealers that sold them said they poor quality, unreliable, hard to get parts for, and no factory support so I purchased a Buell Blast instead.

Royal Enfield Military is also one my favorite.

I worked for a Schwinn bike shop back in the early 80's, Big BMX days. $1500.00 for a kids 20 inch was common.
$3500.00 for a bicycle I understand what you mean Sifo.

I think this is an interesting bike, but I find it odd that WAY more people are discussing this than the impending introduction of the EBR 1190RX a few threads down.

Hugh, I don't feel it's that strange, this motorcycle is there, out now, with tests & pics etc.

We've had so many teasers & "it's coming" messages over the last year or so about EBR, that most folk have got to the stage where there's no more to be said until something actually happens.

Sifo, you know that I know it's not your fault.

XB1125r you weren't that far off the mark with the bicycle comment. Royal Enfield did make bicycles too, I rode my Dad's delivering papers when I was a lad.

Some people have to learn to be complete tossers & to some it just comes naturally, I think I can guess which group you fit into.

Not to rake over old coals but I never understood why Buell did this back in the day.

The mainstream motorcycle buying market is somewhat fickle. Choice is ever changing. Competition from rival manufacturers fierce.

Indeed Ken but there were many threads over many months, often a year or more passed, before we ever knew what the next Buell was.

Back then I recall many jumping ship to other brands as they tired of waiting. Perhaps the most famous of these, a long term BadWeBer who bought an R1 many moons ago, lol.

Still, EBR will sell as many as they can build so it isn't the same as it once was. I'm sure the die hard fans can wait however long it takes seeing as they're use to waiting. And the wait no doubt worthwhile as they already know it seems.

What surprises me is the lack of 'spy' photos of the new EBR testing. I've seen pictures of pretty much every other upcoming new bike snapped in testing all over the world by eaagle eyed passers by, but not a dicky bird on the new EBR other than teaser pics from the factory.

^ Matt- I agree. Hell, we've got alleged spy shots of new Harleys in India; you'd think somebody in Wisconsin would have accidentally photographed the EBR by now. Cory West mentioned on FB earlier this week that he'd been track testing an 1190RX at a track, but that it had different bodywork on it to disguise it. Maybe that explains it?

The only vintage bike I've had a real interest in is the Yamaha RD350/400. Those look like a lot of fun. A 400 was in the local paper years ago for a song and the wife scoffed at it. Several years later she saw pictures of a nicely cafe'd example and asked why I didn't get "one of those."

A local lady was telling us how she won a vintage bike show with a new Royal Enfield. Those judges must not have been very sharp.

Likewise the only "Vintage" bike I've lusted over is either a BMW R90s or the slightly less desirable (but identical looking) R100s.

I should've bought an RZ350 back in the 80s when they were new. I've always regretted not doing so.

I don't know. I've ridden and owned all the RD250/400 and the GT250/380/550/750 and the Kawasaki KH250/350/400 and quite a few more too. Working in a motorcycle shop or two helped. But lusting after them now is more based in nostalgia rather than wanting to enjoy the ride.

I look back now and wonder how many would be alive today had those bikes had fatter softer more compliant radial rubber tyres. Better suspension and less wooden brakes.

Give me any of the above now and I'd likely relish the fun of seeing what they'd be like on todays rubber with up to date suspension and brakes.

Now there's a thought!

Had one, bought second-hand, had to bore it out .40 over, and then put Spec II pipes, Boyesen reeds, a steering dampener, one tooth smaller front sprocket, etc., made it quite a handful. I had the unfortunate year-model that had the bad black box, and it would cut out at the most improper times.

Still wish I had that bike, better yet, a bumblebee KR edition, or a Canuck grey market RZ500 V-4. Heck, I'd settle for a nice Suzook Gamma.


Ahhh, nostalgia. I may take the weekend off and head to Barber Vintage Days this year. And become $$$poor.

BUT HAPPY!!!!
