So here's an odd request - anyone have a known-good 4.2 liter spark computer I can borrow?

Trying to get a buddy's 89 YJ 4.2 carbureted running. New coil. New distributor (complete with pickup). New battery. Zero spark, zero signal into the distributor. I have 2 options - a multi-hundred dollar computer....or rodent damage to the wires.

I'd prefer not to spend hundreds of Roy's dollars on a computer (non-returnable electronic part)...only to find out Mickey ate a wire while it was parked in his field for 3 years.

Mark - nice Grand. If it ain't rusty...keep it stock, clean, and preserved. Too big and heavy to do any decent off-roading, but it'll make a great "cruiser" family Jeep. They're comfy!

Many moons ago I had a 1965 Wagoneer. Nothing Grand about it. It had a terminally leaky "Tornado" six cylinder, automatic, 4WD, gigantic bench seats, and it was painted that light green the forestry department used back in te 60's.

With the exception of that of my former Suburbans, it was an awesomely smooth ride. It was a very tough and durable vehicle for sure.

It is amazing how far back the parts for this '88 you are looking at, will fit. AMC's build motto; "Its a Jeep.....keep it cheap!". Cool vehicle in what looks to be good shape. Not many "woodies" of any kind left out there.

Mark driving a woodie! Whooda' thought?

Well, today it rained. Yesterday it rained. For three days before that.....it rained. Sooooooooo I just had to do something with all of that run off.

So me and my son dig a little trench to catch some of the water.....

Got excited because the water was higher than we though it might get. This clay gets so slippery, an inch of water will have a four wheel drive sliding into doing accidental donuts.

This is where I got to just as he yelled "he dad, did you get the front drive shaft back in?"

Shit no!!! I forgot.

It was the most fun we have had in a while.Rednecks and rain water. Who has more fun for nothing??

4 jeep enter.... 1 jeep leave (without damage)

1st Jeep to go. Transfer case wouldn't go into 4 wheel drive

2nd Jeep to go. I got stuck in a deeper than my tailgate hole. Clutch got full of silt (or so we think) no longer able to MOVE under its own power.... and to add insult to injury... my winch bought the farm from being under water.

3rd Jeep to go. Died on the why home. Starter went bye bye but got fixed in a gas station parking lot.

4th Jeep.... I haven't heard from yet.. but I assume/hope he made it home okay

Drove 3 hours to go wheeling. Paid for the privilege.... and then pow pow pow

Jeep + mud/water = massive fun ~ best to not have Jeep be important transportation unit.

Wolfie.....Got pics in the deep?

I have pics of results of installing front drive shaft, but it was getting dark so no one got good pictures of the fun part.

I have a new take-off hard top for a 4 door JK if anyone needs it. It's going pretty cheap. PM if interested.

at this point... I would say we are 4 for 4.

The forth Jeep is having new wheel bearings and axle seals installed.

I got the clutch out of mine last night.
It was packed full of sand. Power washed the funk out of it and started the re-install.

Days of work for a few hours of fun....

Days of work for a few hours of fun....

The key to all fun with mechanical devices that get abused. My race cars were like that, my off road vehicles were like that. The road bikes were ride for a few hours and clean for hours.

Then came the Ulysses. Ride for weeks and spend a few hours on maintenance. Is this another reason it has been such a great machine?

If you are lucky, the Wagoneer may have an almost indestructible GM turbo 400 transmission in it.

Did you use a clutch alignment pilot tool?

Doing it by yourself can be a bear even with a trans jack. Ya just get it close and it needs a wiggle here, another pump of the jack, a push there and a pull that way.....all at the same time.

I have always found it best to get pumped up, a little mad, and the first thing I do of the day.

Good luck, and don't forget anything!

etennuly basically nailed it, it really helps to have another pair of hands on the transmission too.

That does add a significant amount of weight to it... Put on some Pantera/Megadeath/Metallica and get it done.

In your pre struggle preparation a shot of 'Wild Turkey' or the likes would not hurt!

Just try to slam it all in in the first effort.

Failing that.....take the transfer case off.

we got it all back together..... kinda
down to the 4 bolts on the front drive shaft and for some reason, the front drive shaft didn't want to extend out.
Beat on it... pried on it... BEAT and PRIED on IT! and nothing.
After some time we got it close enough to get the bolts started but someone thought it needed one more pry.... little needle bearings went everywhere...

Today I went to NAPA and picked up a new bearing and POW POW... it moves under its own power

build, break, fix...... repeat

If that drive shaft's splines are clean and lubed it should slide easily. It is probably bent. Damn off road casualties anyhow!

Did your whole team of Jeepin buds get their's repaired also?

one is waiting on a new drive shaft.
He had a spare transfer case that had a slip yoke on it already. He "SHOULD" just need the drive shaft. We shall see.

When I took the front drive shaft out of mine it pulled back pretty easy.
I'm thinking (hoping) it has a little corrosion from sitting for a couple of weeks after I power washed it.

sitting for a couple of weeks after I power washed it.

I just went ahead and painted mine!

It got sprayed during a few "spin cycles".

I have ruined several old T shirts in this stuff.

Speaking about transmissions!
Going to do a overhaul on a T15 to put in my J4000 very soon. (already have some parts from Novak on the shelf)
but what is a good oil to put in it?

The T15 i use now has some 80w90 in it
it has already done a shitload of shiftwork and has some axial play that i can't get fixed and grinds sometimes like hell and making all kinds of nasty noises ,so it would be nice to shift it a little smoother if possible!?

Keep on jeepin

Lucas makes some pretty good gear lubes, they certainly test the heck out of their stuff off road racing.

I have the un-coveted T4 that was supposed to explode the first time I let the clutch out with my 400 Chevy. It runs ATF, when it does explode it will look like it is bleeding!

Our little mud pit that we call "Camp Swampy" just keeps getting better and better(might have to do with being deeper).

No one else got Jeepin' pictures this summer???

Uh-oh, I accidentally acquired this little gem through an OMG trade moment today.

I saw it on the back of a truck on it's way to a crusher. I couldn't let that happen. I flagged them down, and after a couple of hours of tinkering, I drove it around my field tonight.

Happy, Happy, Happy.

Great catch Vern! It's just tragic to see good machines like that get destroyed...

Hmmm... that's almost a convertible, is it an automatic? I'd talked with my hunny today about sometime in the not too distant future, getting her a 'vert...
