At 0:53 into the video, is that the old "Honda Proving Center of California" down below?

Yep - certainly is. You KNOW this territory - as a former local. Honda Track

They launched just South of China Lake (roughly)

There is now also a Kia track North of California City. Kia Track

Personal opinion: the way Kia obtained the land is a scandal.

I damn sure hope some of these privateers are VERY successful, because NASA isn't getting anywhere fast.

I rode out to the HPCC on my VFR one time. I asked the guard at the gate if I could go inside and have a look around. Seemed like a pretty simple request to me. I flashed him my best, "It's OK, I'm Ferris Bueller, I'm a trained professional, I do this all the time" smile.

"No."

"Yabbut, like, dude, c'mon, I'm riding a Honda!" I said.

"Very nice bike. No."

I don't think he was armed, but he looked like he really, truly meant NO, so I didn't crash the gate. I got no pix, so I guess it never happened. : D

Back to the flight: Any guess what kinda G's they're pulling at about 0:40 into the vid? Sounds like they can barely speak at that point.

Hey Slaughter, if you can send me a link re: the purchase I'd sure like to read it. I spent many years riding around Cal City, Jawbone Canyon, Dove Springs and Spangler Hills. If Kia paid more than $10 an acre they got robbed

I have a friend whose family had a 10 acre spread out there. It was going to be their retirement mini-ranch. Kia had the area declared an "Urban Blighted Area" - I'm not making that up and under the laws of Eminent Domain, got them booted off - bought out against their wishes.

If you'll notice in Google Earth - that area is anything but "URBAN" - and it certainly hasn't seen any form of "URBAN RENEWAL."

I'll see if I can find a link. It was a decade ago.

Article on the Eminent Domain scam:

LA Times article

Orange County Supervisor Chris Norby is one of the state's most fervent opponents of redevelopment agencies, which he calls "cockamamie schemes." Norby, author of the book "Redevelopment: The Unknown Government," serves as statewide director of Municipal Officials for Redevelopment Reform.

In his view, California City cheated property owners out of fair market value for their land.

"This is a private, foreign, multibillion-dollar corporation that has an American government entity forcibly acquiring land on its behalf," Norby said. "If Hyundai wanted the land, it should have bought it from the landowners.
