I was excited as I have finally narrowed down my search for another motorcycle to just one. It just so happens that I have found two at very reasonable prices with low miles (one being within easy driving distance). Unfortunately, I did not realize that my credit score has taken a significant hit due to having just bought a home . Oh well. In a few months, perhaps.

This is the bike in question:

The years span from 2003 to 2006, and while there are some minor difference I have no preference.

That will be a ton of fun.

Did you price in the "thumper as a street bike" motor wear factor? The KTM's are great bikes, as are the Hondas and others, but all of them are probably going to need some significant engine work before 20k miles. At least a new piston and maybe jug. They are simple to work on and parts aren't insane, so its not a deal breaker, but it's something to keep in mind.

Most certainly. These tend to need a top end in the 25-40K mile range, from what I've come across. The 640/625 LC4 engines seem to be among the most durable of their kind. They're certainly less stressed than the more competition based machines. The worst issue that seems to come up is clutch bearings on the earlier engines and apparently the intake rocker arm roller needs close inspection. The oil change looks like a bit of a PITA, but I'm sure that becomes routine over time.

I had considered the Husky 610 as well, but the dealer network is even more sparse, and the timing chains need replacing at 5-7.5k miles. That's just too much work. Another bike I liked was the Suzuki DR650SE, but even after minor upgrades of just about everything, it still comes up short compared to the stock KTM. The KTM is the only one that has given me that warm fuzzy feeling. Being a long term tuber owner, I can deal with a few quirks!

I had also considered the newer 690SM, and while they can be had for amazing deals on the secondary market, they just lack character IMO.

Do you get the BMW G650X Supermotard over there?
Guy I know here has one & loves it.

This is from the local track where I used to live, they have a rallycross circuit & an auto museum too, worth a visit if you get over.

We have this place nearby:
http://gorally.com/firm/

The G650 "Xmoto" was short lived over here and no longer available. It is a nice bike, but a bit soft for my tastes. Most dealers had a hard time giving them away.

The supermoto bubble has mostly burst, so there are deals to be made right now. It's frustrating as I can't take advantage of it at the moment.

I know that feeling well, I've been watching end of season deals going by on Guzzi Stelvio's.
But no point in buying here if we're off to Canaydia.
Best to wait til next year over there.

Rick A, your credit shouldn't have gone much if any from just buying a home. I have been in the Real Estate and Finance for 15 yrs, so I could give you some good hints- BadWeb Discount, absolutely free.

If you like I can pm you my contact info, and we can go over what may have happened, and how you improve it as quickly as possible.

I'm still hoping for the AX to hit but am looking at the 1190 Adventure as a possibility.

At 150hp and 4 way traction control with a 4 way ABS it looks like a real deal/ BUT it's not available in the states yet and best guess on price is $20,000. I'd have to sell granny's rocking chair WITH granny!

I'll be happy with 55hp and long travel suspension. The roads around here suck. It aught to be nice to jump a streetbike that is made for such things.

Sounds good Satori. I'll take you up on that. The wife and I have credit in good standing so it was a bit of a surprise to be flat out denied for a small loan.

I thought it had something to do with this:

When the housing bubble burst - it took most of the moto market with it.
DAMHIK
I had people with 700 beacon that were in their job over 10 years, REPEAT customers of Harley getting denied credit.
The trickle started in 2007; by 2009 - it was about 50/50 for the apps I submitted were refused by HDFSI - many of those chose to refinance their house to pay for the bike.....
and then that bubble burst -.... and the market went to shiate.
At the time - I told my manager based on Econ history - we were looking about 5-7 years before it came back to 2002 levels....provided they don't f with the dollar. He thought I was nuts.....

Just talked to him last week; his numbers are on track to match 2002.....
'Credit' is not out of the woods yet - but it is freeing up; and will crash again ; this time because of the 'healthcare' bubble

a 'double' dip is on the way - those econ cycles have been there since 1922; and we are well on track to repeat them.

PS - SuMo is still killer FUN !
and there are models that can be had cheaply a couple of model years out .... there may even be some Kawi 250s out there that never got assembled - Montana is your best source for those ; always has been.

ENJOY !

Hopefully you can join the SUMO world soon!

I picked up an 08 Husqvarna SM610 last year to compliment my XB. Tough choice on what to ride every day.

I hate you. I'd like to have that dilemma. The Buell needs to be pulled off the road for a while for some mechanical and a lot of cosmetic TLC.

Most likely I'll just wait a few months and try a personal loan with the mortgage lender. When I bought the Buell I got it on a personal loan, not a motorcycle specific loan. That bank flat out denied me on a motorcycle loan, as well. The wife has better credit and I have a more established credit history. There must be a way. I only need $3-4K.

It's terrible that motorcycles are considered a high risk leisure item by lenders. Some people actually rely on them for daily transportation.

I worked in motorcycle dealerships as the cycle market died. First came being "permanently laid off" from the Harley dealer, then working for a multi line dealer that soon died off, and finally, working for what most consider the pit of motorcycle dealers in town. I don't miss it much. There was much doom and gloom. Everyone tried to expand just before everything went bust.
