Brough Superior, the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles and vehicle of choice for both Lawrence of Arabia and George Bernard Shaw, is back building motorcycles. They’re producing faithful new builds of the SS100 Brough Superiors (pronounced: Bruff Superior) from 1927. The 1,000cc OHV V-Twin is a J.A.P. engine (named after John Alfred Prestwich, the engine’s designer), they have been upgraded a little from the originals (very slightly) and are expected to sell for ~$195,000 USD a piece. Not exactly chump change but the bikes are expected to either maintain their value or appreciate over time, a 1925 Brough recently sold for $450,188 at auction. Interestingly, if you take the original price of the Brough and adjust it for inflation it’s about $430,000, meaning it maintained value almost perfectly over the 80+ years since it was built. I'm not sure about the replicas having the high values. The Vincent Owners Club Spares Co. made a Black Shadow a few years ago from all new parts and it barely sold at auction for under then current prices. | ||

I saw that bike last Thursday in Palos Verdes, CA, I had no idea of what it was, other than another fully faired sport bike. They were parked at the upper turn out on P.V. Drive East (switch backs), setting up for a photo shoot. I was pedaling up hill on the other side of the road. And, From 30 feet away it didn't look like anything special, to me. Since that pull out is used a lot for photo shoots, I continued grinding my way up the hill... I'm sorry I didn't stop now to take a closer look. After seeing the photo above; the profile of the bike is unmistakable. One thing is certain, if Lenno buys one; it will show up at the Rock Store at some point in the future. | ||

We've seen the bike in two different engineering group presentations by Paul Taylor (on Left in OP picture) and in test at Willow Springs by Higbee. Sir Alan Cathcart did the recent ride in Goodwood/England and prior. It is somewhat unique in that the fairing, cooling ductwork and chassis are one and the same - ALL carry loads. The forks and swingarm are also interesting while the front end is.... danged interesting. You can't see it easily in the pic - but there is an upper and lower A-arm that really offers unique anti-dive.
