@Aesquire:

Nice post! I've done battle with many dirt clods with a .22LR. One of my favorite targets was frozen milk jugs using my .22/250 (a .22LR or steroids?). : )

Only draw back, is walking out into a clear cut 200 yards or so to place the targets. Walking back. Then after all the fun is over. Having to go retrieve the pieces.

Wow, the Inteliscope looks freaking cool! I wonder if that would work with my iPod? Just looked again, it does, it does! : )

BTW, the CCI Minimag was the winner back last century. Judging from size of foam explosion. Today? I suggest you test your stuff, yourself. It's fun.

Pdxs3t, try freezing the jugs, then cutting off the plastic. Keep in a cooler until ready. No clean up. Bigger splash.

I also like the soft cheek rest better. Adjustable, not as likely to catch on stuff. Limited lifespan, but an inexpensive experiment.

I had a Bushmaster Varminter AR clone in 5.56 that was an honest minute of angle gun. Heavy for walking around, sure, but from a bench, you could see the holes appear in a shoot & see target. At the local range, I'd walk out 200 yds and hang a 6" bull, then stick a half dozen 1" Shoot & see pasters on the 100 yd target.
I'd warm up trying to make one hole groups at 100, then move over to the 200 and go for points.

That kind of thing gets you talked about, btw. I also loved to let much better shots try the Varminter. They were impressed, and I learned technique. I doubt I'll ever make it to Camp Perry, but guys who have have given me pointers.

Alas, I gave away all my guns for Christmas, and now am very much jonesing for a 10/22. I may have to have a buddy in PA hold onto it, so I can go down and shoot. I'm thinking about the new Breakdown model...... but I've always loved the Mannlicher style International.

Heck, I may have to leave NY next April. The NY SAFE act defines anything vaguely military and/or holding 7 rounds as an "Assault Rifle" ( an arbitrary term, and a lie. ) Anyhoo... I was on a dating web site and I told a girl I looked good in a uniform and was packing more than 7..... and now I'm on the list.

Worst part is.......... I lied.

I don't look good in a uniform.

My .22 tactically pokes holes in paper plates
My .22 tactically rings the 100yard steel
My .22 tactically assassinates toys from the dollar store

Mine was my first real firearm from 1996.
I have had so many rounds down that pipe that I had to buy a new bolt assembly. The extractor and feeding wasn't working no matter how clean and lubed up it was.

Before, I tried to resurface the extractor with a little file. When I found out how cheap ALL the moving parts were together, I just bought the whole thing.

I used to tear up a brick of ammo a week with that thing.

@Aesquire: Great tip on the milk jugs. I will remember that for the next time. Sure save on a bunch of walking.

Sounds like your Bushmaster was a nice shooter. 223/5.56mm is a neat little round. Especially if you have a rifle like the Bushmaster you had. I had a Mini-14 customized back in 94. 1-9 twist, 20" bull barrel with the trigger worked to a 3 lb pull. Man, it loved my 60gr SP reloads. Divorce made it go bye-bye.Its pretty cool to be able to lay shot's on top of each other with a semi auto at 100+ yards.

The pic natex posted of his Mannlicher 10/22 is sweeeeeeeet! great looking rifle. I've always wanted one too.

You wouldn't be going wrong with the break down either. They make a "Tactical" of the break down too.

@gregtonn:

If you have issue's with the name of the rifle. Call Ruger and let them know! Explain to them your opinion of what a "tactical" weapon should be. Maybe they will change the name of it for you?

Your opinion made no sense? Cleaning for month's, Really?

Reep, for example offered a logical opinion about the rifle. It was constructive criticism. And well taken.

You on the other hand, offer something that doesn’t even make sense! Then you go on to flame me, because I called the rifle by the name the manufacture call’s it?

Go back to your regularly scheduled programing.

Sorry on the digression on the 5.56, just bragging.

Besides a good plinker, it seems to me you are putting together a budget, unique, arm that is suitable for carbine training/practice for a sport like "3-gun".

In fact it would be fun to try a .22 version of the 3-gun format.
How about? 10/22, 22/45 pistol, 20 ga shotgun????

Thanks, I found the "tactical" breakdown version.... At Ruger website.

Crap! I found the Distributor Exclusives...
They also do a Mannlicher in black laminate and stainless..... sweet.

The Sporters look very nice.

But the Gem is the Altamont Classic w/Schnabel forend. Gorgeous.

I agree on @Natexlh1000's rifle. Classic lines.

Something different. Not a typical chassis build, like lots of people do. I'm new to Red Dot's. this my first one. I've always used conventional optic's. And with the quad rail. I can get a Red Dot, magnifier and flip up back up sights on the top rail. I think that's really cool!

The little rifle is very flickable and is very easy to bring on target. I'm excited to get it on the range. Then out for some random dirt clod busting.

I like the idea of 10/22, 22/45 and 20GA 3-gun format.

Cool deal on finding the tactical Break down 10/22. All that I have read about it has been good. There is a really nice folding stock out there for it too.

Some of those dealer specials are sweet! There is a few I've been lusting after.

Here is a shot of my .223/5.56mm. I've had it since 87. I've given it a slight makeover. Heavy gas block with a white stripe front sight. Sightless muzzle break/flash hider. Three point sling, because I walk with a cane and fall over sometimes. Need to keep the weapon secured to me so I don't drop it when I fall. Accu-Strut barrel stabilizer. Wolff springs. They only thing let to do is a Tech Sights rear sight. I've put about 5,000 rounds through it. Its a fun one to shoot. I'd call it a tactical rifle but, I think its probably best to call it a General Purpose Rifle. that I have no problem trusting my life with.

For plinking, I enjoy saltine crackers and cans of diet soda.

You don't have to clean up the crackers afterwards (birds and the next rain will take care of that, and they won't stink or anything). And with a .22 they explode like little skeet.

Diet soda's make a cool sphere of foam when you hit them with a .38 or .45, and hold together for a lot of hits with a .22, and you can then go clean them up and put them in a trash bag without getting all sticky or stung by bees since they are diet.

A .22 with a red dot sight, a brick of .22lr, and a box of saltines is about as fun as an afternoon gets. : )

My fiance and her family had a blast with my friend's M&P 15/22 at the range. He has it decked out with a red dot and lots of other upgrades. It's identical to an AR-15.
I've thought of modifying a tactical stock to fit my Ruger 22/10 take down. But by the time I'm done I'll have spent more than what an M&P would cost.

I've watched several of their video's before. Not bad at all!

This vid was cool. Liked that they used a 10/22. I also noticed the hordes of quart soda pop bottles, gathering off to the side. Pushing a .22LR 440 yards is a daring shot. Not an easy task at all.

@Reep:

Love the cracker targets. And if you get hungry, you can eat a target! : )

Back in 1993-94, me and my friend Eric (also known as The Sheriff) use to get the life size stand up cardboard display's that they have at the video store. Those worked great. Especially if they had more then one person on them. We'd do handgun drills at 25 yards, and rifle work at 150 yards. The Sand Lot Kids was the best one. Multiple hostage situation! The video store was really cool to us too. We'd buy for $5 each. lol....I bet some of em, we blew apart are worth a nice chunk of change now!

I was just on youtube.com checking out the KJW KC-02 10/22 airsoft rifle pictured above. To my surprise. The KJW KC-02 10/22 is very much like a real 10/22. So much so, a person took the KJW KC-02 10/22 and installed it into the wooden stock from the real deal. With just a little bit of inletting.

Man, that has the rusty gear turning in my mostly empty head. That stock would make for a cool red neck tactical build! : )

Check out this disassembly video. Its kind of neat.

One of my favorite targets?
Necco wafers. Taped on a string so they turn with the wind or slotted in a piece of wood. Pick your rifle and range. Call your color before you fire.

And wafers make for a good snack too when you get hungry out on the range!

Me and my buddy The Sherriff, used melons too for practice. At the time, I was really into the Hornady XTP bullet. And was able to work up some nasty reloads for the .357 Mag, 9mm and 40 S&W. We'd go to the local Safeway the night before and raid the dumpster for the discarded melons.

Even though most were on the soft side. They still provided us with some really spectacular impact's. The 147gr XTP bullet for the 9mm was the most fun from 15 - 25 yards. Ah, the good old day's.

One gun, that I found that complimented the 10/22 nicely was the Ruger Mkll. That was 20+ years ago though. There is much better available now.

Shot of my Standard and a shot of the Government Model I bought my son the day he was born back on May 14, 1993. Its never been fired and still factory fresh. Its going to be passed off to him, a little later this year.

Back then I also had a stainless, slab side heavy Barrel. That was a very sweet little pistol to shoot. Between it and the 10/22. A whole lot of fun could be had with a brick or two of .22LR.

Mine is a MK1.
I ran the numbers through the factory and they said it was 1954 build.

Here's my "tactical" target rifle build. I fabricated all the parts from scrap. The wheels are the only parts that I didn't make.......but I did draw them up and toy with actually making the wheels. It has a hidden sleeved barrel with about 86,000 pounds of "stretch" holding the inner tube straight as a fiddle string. One pound,1&5/8 inch lead ball....
