Servicing a friends' bike, '06 883. Manual says 1/4" belt deflection at 10 lbs of force. That's where it is...but it's tight as a freakin' guitar string. Is this like the old tubers, where the book said run it tight but reality says run it "scary-loose"? She only has 5900 miles on it, so no real chance to break anything just yet...but I'd like to set it up properly for her (since her boyfriend won't let me service her, I'm stuck with servicing her motorcycle lol).

I ran two Sporties and my Dyna with the belt adjusted that way, per the manual. Never had problems.

Did you measure it with a gauge? It's easy to over estimate the 10 lbs. thing by feel.

When you are measuring the belt tension make sure the swing arm is as close to a straight line as you can get drawing a line from the sprocket thru the swing arm pivot to the rear axle. That is the longest distance the belt will see and that is where max belt tension should be.
