The president has made a decision about providing more support to the opposition that will involve providing direct support to the [Supreme Military Council]. That includes military support," Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communication Ben Rhodes told reporters.

A Syrian rebel group's pledge of allegiance to al-Qaeda's replacement for Osama bin Laden suggests that the terrorist group's influence is not waning and that it may take a greater role in the Western-backed fight to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad.

So we really are going to provide military support to our enemies. What could possibly go wrong?

This is an issue of some importance.
Russia will go pretty far to keep their warm water port in Syria going, and they support Asad.

I'm not at all sure who's who in the rebel forces, and it's looking like a lot of jihadi support is happening.

This is very destabilizing, and could easily lead to wider conflict.

No, that's mealy mouthing it. This has a very high probability of really bad outcomes for the whole region and beyond.

Jihadi control of Syria and Egypt put Israel in a vice, and it's 1973 all over again, with US built weapons on both sides, and the latest in Russian anti aircraft scattered about.

History buffs, look up 1973 war, anti aircraft weapons, the effects, frequencies used, etc. The Russian missiles were new generation with radar frequencies crafted to not display on US equipment. They did this with the knowledge from US POW's sent to Russia from Vietnam, and captured equipment.

Egypt & Syria also had new antitank missiles, far more deadly and easy to use.

A different war than today, true, but policy mistakes in goals, mirroring the enemy, Rules of Engagement, are still a major cause for excessive casualties. On both sides. On all sides considering the effect on the civilian population.

My point is we are on the verge of another "technological surprise" in warfare. The Russian Anti air & anti tank missiles in 1973. The Stealth F-117 in Desert Storm.

What's next?
The latest gen sky denial systems designed to combat our stuff in Syria 2013? Chemical IRBM strikes on Rome? Stockholm?

The jury selection process (voir dire) continues in the Zimmerman trial. Interesting reader comment from LI's coverage yesterday:

quote:

Some Jury Selection Reality: I tried high-stakes civil jury cases around the country for 42 years. Through those decades of jury selection I learned a fact that is extremely politically incorrect. That fact is: Potential jurors who are liberal frequently have an agenda and lie to get on juries when they believe they can strike a blow in favor of their agenda. When, during voir dire, it is clear that such jurors likely have a bias they usually deny that they have a bias and swear, falsely, that they can treat both sides equally, and that neither party starts out with any advantage in their mind. That frequently results in them not being struck for cause. On the other hand, potential jurors who are conservative and who may have a bias that could impact their view of the case will admit their bias and will admit that they are not absolutely certain that they can overcome that bias, which results in them being struck for cause. The result of all of this is that the liberal potential jurors with a bias, but who deny it, can be removed only by use of limited peremptory challenges, and the ability to do that is itself limited in the situation in which such jurors are members of some protected demographic group. On the other hand, the conservative jurors are struck for cause. The overall result is that more liberals than conservatives are on juries.

Translation: Liberals lie.

WAR

Go back a few years. Imagine a CIA plot to get Iran which considers us the Great Satan and hates us, to declare war on al Qaeda and expend blood and treasure on exterminating al Qaeda – which long ago declared war on us, and which is the most easily defined enemy in our War of Terror. Imagine that al Qaeda might be induced to expend its resources fighting Hezbollah and Iran. Imagine that we could get our enemies to fight each other using whatever weapons they could muster, and expend their blood and treasure on exterminating each other, so that neither had very much to spend on killing Americans.

Come to the present, where that is happening. Israel after careful consideration has stayed out of the Syrian civil war on the grounds that the Assad Family has kept the peace with Israel for decades, while al Qaeda attacks Israelis. Imagine that somehow the trick has been made to work, and our enemies fight each other in a war in which the United States has no describable national interest.

Now imagine that having achieved that result we decide to enter the war.

Obama to step up military support of Syrian rebels

President Barack Obama has authorised sending weapons to Syrian rebels for the first time, U.S. officials said, after the White House disclosed that the United States has conclusive evidence President Bashar Assad’s government used chemical weapons against opposition forces trying to overthrow him.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleea st/syria/10119836/Obama-to-step-up-military-suppor t-of-Syrian-rebels.html

Napoleon Bonaparte once said that one should never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence. The problem comes when the incompetence is so grossly incompetent that one begins to wish for more competent malice… Anatol France once said that a thief in power is to be preferred to a fool, for a thief may upon occasion take a vacation.

We have no national interest in Syria, and we have no obligations. The Assad regime has been more tolerant of Christians and Bahai minorities than al Qaeda anywhere al Qaeda is in power. The rebels against Assad recently beheaded a 15 year old boy – after a trial – on a charge of blasphemy and insulting the Prophet. The al Qaeda insurgents have no chance of winning without powerful Western support, but they can make the war drag on a long time, neutralizing both Hezbollah and al Qaeda or at least slowing them down. Whereupon the United States will give aid and comfort to our enemies no matter which side we choose to support.

Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence, but one need not choose to support incompetence.

Obama apparently is rushing to enter his third war, and one in which we have few allies and no national interests at all. We do so on the basis of far less intelligence evidence about Assad’s use of Sarin than we had of Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction.

On that last comment, I note that I can show you pictures of Kurds murdered by Saddam's forces with poison gas. That Syria is where both Israel, and a retired Russian General said they sent convoys of trucks, loaded with poison gas. And, that I have not seen any pictures of, rebels killed by poison gas in Syria. ( although it is well known that Assad has poison gas, that he has wmd's is not in dispute by anyone )

So, one has to ask, who's side is Obama on?

Many have said we should not be the world's police force. ( usually when a R wants to go save a bunch of oppressed people, if they are D's. Vice versa applies )

I simply make the sarcastic observation that if I Wanted us to take that role, I'd begin by eliminating the government in one of the most corrupt, crime ridden territories on Earth. One that is easily reached by US forces. One that has a government that seems oblivious to the needs of the people, spies upon them, has passed laws to imprison them in secret jails, without trial. One that tolerates an insanely high crime rate and murder rate on the ordinary citizens of that territory, while protecting the elite, aristocrats that rule with an iron fist and use the velvet glove of free food, tv, phones, and housing to pacify the hopeless poor.

This mess, this travesty must not stand.

We know it's not the people of that land, they are just like us, simply wanting to live their lives. It's a fairly easy decision, we must eliminate the leadership, and their puppet government that has full blame but takes no responsibility for the outrages.

That's right, it's time to Overthrow the Fascist Dictators of The District Of Columbia.

Ivan has pulled his ships out of the Black and into the Med.

"Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stressed that arming rebels is a step fraught with possible “escalation in the region” while allegations of the use of chemical weapons “are not supported by reliable evidence”.

Russia Hits Back at U.S. Over Syria

Since there have not yet been any actual shooting incidents with US & Russian troops, this is a bit misleading for a headline, but it's true that Russia has no intention of letting Barry have his way in the propaganda war.

The Russians are also pretty darn good at the spy stuff, so I'd bet that some new anti-air weapons are already in place. ( shades of 1973 )

The core idea is to be still bitching as the missiles rain down on the land, bitching about the stupid decisions our leaders make as we all vaporize.

Or not be destroyed in the Apocalypse predicted by all, and then go riding. Which is the preferred resolution.

1st Amendment, and all that. If you have a good reason why we should go into THIS war, by all means, trot them out. I can be convinced by rational argument that I'm wrong, and I certainly don't agree with all these pundits say.

Anyhoo, this thread will be replaced with one complaining about President H, or J etc. in 3 more years. ( unless it's not....play forboding music )

I suppose we need to crank up another BBQ thread, with arguments on the best Charcoal Grill, ( Weber ) Chimney Starter, ( Weber ) and Smoker. ( no idea )

Temp control is excellent as long as you keep it closed. You also have to learn to not build too big of a fire. That forces you to choke it off and you don't get good smoke at all, and it gets hard to control. I've found that about 10-12 charcoal briquettes and 3-4 decent sized hickory chips will cook for about 6 hours nice and steady at about 225 degrees. For longer smokes I load about 7-8 more briquettes and a couple of wood chips from a small chimney starter I made from a large soup can. You have to take everything out of the grill to load more fuel though, and that disrupts the cooking every 4 hours or so.

It also makes great home made pizza on a pizza stone. You can easily get 500 or so degrees out of it (or more if you like).

What it doesn't do well is grill steaks and burgers. The fire is too far from the grill for this sort of cooking.

It's a cheap version of the ceramic eggs made from ceramic coated insulated steel. It's burning with the snow on it in the pic. Even at 500 degrees you can put you hand on the lid and not get burned. Don't touch the chimney at the top though, that's not insulated. That insulation makes it very fuel efficient.

Obama blows!

Instead of whining about this thread, why don't you step up and contribute? Has your opinion of Obama changed in light of the rainfall of scandals that he has caused? One might argue that Milhouse can't be traced to any of this. He has set the tone and doesn't have to directly order the people he has hired to commit crimes against the American People. It is the nature of bureaucracies. An interesting aside is that there is no document or tape or anything that directly links Hitler with the Holocaust. Yet without Hitler, the Holocaust would not have occurred. (Don't wet your panties as I am not comparing Obama to Hitler).

I learn a lot from this thread so keep 'em coming even if it is a copy and paste.

Hybrid, what is your opinion of the Fourth Estate that Obama is building?

I don't know if I agree with Bill.

There's a difference of opinion on if we should help and who in the Syrian revolution.

A lot of people have been killed already, and the concept that "we need to arm the rebels for peace" strikes me as missing a few cogs.

See Bill Whittle Afterburner on "mirroring".

We want the multiple sides to come to the table and talk peace. Ok, that's usually a good idea. The concept that one side won't show up unless there is some kind of parity, some chance that the rebels will win, also might have some validity....

I just don't know. Because I don't trust this president to not make it worse. Like he did in Afghanistan. ( more US casualties in 4 years than the previous 7 ) Maybe learning that The President talked to the Sec State, announced the spin, then went to take a nap before his big Vegas Fund Raiser, leaving a minion to "deal with it". While the people "somebody" ordered abandoned to die were still alive and calling for backup.

Opinion?

Assad will get assassinated, we will be embroiled in a little global farcus that leads to bigger ans dumber things; that distraction will allow the domestic clensing of opposition and discent

The first WWI that led to the eventual Red Revolution was kicked off with an assassination of an Austrian Duke in July.

Lets see how much history rhymes.
a three - four year war
suspension of elections
a new American Soviet by the 100th celebration of the original

enjoy the show - the next five years are going to be shiatty.
