Cherish the ones we have and never forget the ones that have passed.

I'll still never forget, when Ferris was visiting the house we are in now for the first time. Ferris was sitting on the small couch. Kirb came down the stairs at 90 mph and did a berm shot off Ferris's chest to say hello. All 30 lbs. of him...

Wahoooooooooo!!!

I sure hope more peeps will post pix. Its really cool to see everyone's family.

There she is...A total sweetheart too.

Not sure if we ever mentioned that she's a rescue. Lover she is, more like a dog than a cat at times.

The bruising faded pretty quickly, but the rib pain lingered for a while...

These are a few pictures of Miss Zoe. She's the second rescue we've had the pleasure of sharing life with. Aster, her sister in puppy heaven, had to be put down after in incident with a neighbor dog. Zoe's taken her place well and is an absolute clown and lover. We've had her about a year and looking forward to many many more. We think she's a golden and collie mix- she gets LOTS of compliments!

~ 4 months old, before we adopted her

~ 6 months, at our house

Last summer, Stone Mountain, NC

This year's Christmas card

Great pix, Alex. Miss Zoe is a real sweetheart (and runs like a frikkin' gazelle - she made me look like an old fat man when I tried to play tag with her in your back yard!)

Very nice pix Alex! Miss Zoe sure is beautiful.

Kirby Update:

Kirb has been doing pretty good until last night. As the night went on, we could tell something wasn't right. And the only place he would kind of settle down was right in front of the front door.

So I grabbed my pillow a several blanket's and laid down with him on the floor from 1:30 AM - 7:00 AM this morning.

Shel took him to the vet this morning. They did an ultra sound again. To make sure his bladder didn't pass through the hernia again. Its still where it should be (thankfully). They hooked up an IV and got some fluids in him. And found that he's has a bad ear infection. Which was the cause of, most his discomfort last night. Also learned he has a bad tooth, which we didn't know about either.

He's back home now resting and in a much better state. Has several pill's and ear drops he has to take for the next few day's to fight the infection.

On Wednesday morning, he's all set for his surgery. We'll be able to see him in the afternoon but, will have to spend Wednesday night in the hospital. And we'll be able to bring him home on Thursday morning.

I can't thank you all enough, for the kindness. Its very moving and beautiful.

Yeah, a few little speed bumps to get over. We'll get his ear infection cleared in a few day's. And his tooth, we can limp him along for a bit with the rice, pumpkin and ground beef diet he's on. Hoping the doc will work with us on the tooth, when Kirb goes in on Wednesday to repair the hernia.

If we can get through tonight and tomorrow. We'll be able to rest a little easier until Wednesday.

Please thank Big Gus for us! Great looking pup and looks like he enjoys that seat! : )

Damn...he eats better than I do!! ; )

Ears can be tough on those little guys...standing up like that, they funnel all sorts of junk into themselves. Kelsey's face rolls are the same - I have to clean them out a couple times a week so she doesn't get too much stink-face. She also got a nose job as a puppy, to open her nasal cavities for better breathing, and right after I was in the hospital she ate...something in the yard that plugged her colon. Scans didn't pick it up, they had to open her and run her bowels by hand to find a piece of polyurethane that was corking her shut completely. Bad rains washed it into the yard, and it looked enough like her Kong toy that she chewed on it...and swallowed it.

They get pricey sometimes...but they're our family and we owe it to them to do everything we can : )

A friend posted a poem on facebook, but I can't find it right now. One line has always stuck with me though - "love me and care for me always. I may beg for attention, but don't push me away. You have your job, your friends, and your life...but I have only you."

Glad Kirby is doing better!!

Rat,

That is a very cool line of words. Thanks for sharing that. If you happen to find the rest of the poem, please share.

They love us unconditionally, and don't ask for much in return. Food, water and a warm and loving home.

We have to do the wrinkle wipe with Kirb and Bandit too. Especially around their eye's. Lots of gook get's built up.

Kirb much more comfortable and happy today. Our son Kyle is home for the weekend. Kirb loves his Ky. His little stub tail was wagging at 190 MPH when Ky walked in the door this afternoon.

We call that phenomena "helicopter butt" around here. Except the Basenji, he's got a waggy donut.

lol...Helo butt it is for sure!

Bandit didn't get cropped as he should have by the peeps that had him, when we rescued the little dude. So he has like this little hook like, lightning bolt of a stub tail. looks all kinds of goofy when he wags it.

Works great to hook the index finger on to when he is being a butt head, playing keep away. Able to pull him back (sounds awful, doesn't hurt him). He'll actually turn his butt back at ya so you can pull him back. He's a strange pup.

Kirby Update:

He is doing pretty good today. He's up on the bed with me, with his head resting up on my left shoulder, snoring. Gotta love them Bulldog like faces.

We're still all set for tomorrow at 7:30 AM for surgery time. I'm going to be a nervous wreck tomorrow. Will actually be his first time away from us (the family)in eight years. Going to make sure he has his down blanket that he loves. To keep him comfy while there.

I'll post an update tomorrow afternoon after his surgery, when we go see him.

Paws crossed.

He'll be fine : ). But I feel for you. My poor Kelsey was wide open when they found that thing plugging her bowel. I was a nervous wreck. Looking at her even 24 hours after surgery though? She could care less. Still good to this day : ). Grab a shot and a beer, take a deep breath, and relax. He'll be home before you know it!

Thanks Rat!

Your little Kelsey is sooooooo adorable. We love Pugs, Bulldog's, Frenchies and of course Boston's. Just something about them flat face's that are hard not to fall in love with. We have a little Pug that lives next door by the name of Otis. The little dude is cute as hell.

We're doing our best to keep the nerves calm. Got the positive thoughts flowing. Many peeps pulling for him...which is very cool. : )

Kirby Update:

Shel just spoke to the doctor. The Kirb has just come out of surgery. And he has pulled through with flying colors. The hernia was larger then what the doc thought, she was though, able to get it closed. The ER report from the 9th said he had a double hernia. She looked and couldn’t find a 2nd hernia. So what she did was, add several stitches on the other side of his butt, just in case. It will also help in the healing of the actual hernia. The doc also pulled the tooth that was causing him problems, and caused the ear infection. She also noticed several other teeth that were loose (I guess it just happens with dogs as they age). She removed those too, to avoid any problems down the road.

He’s still heavily sedated....but, we will be able to go see him at 3:30 PM today. They are going to keep him doped up for pain and, so he doesn’t get too excited, when he see’s us this afternoon. The doc’s final words, He has many years of life left.

I can’t even begin to express how happy and grateful I am. The compassion, kindness and support by all is truly an amazing.

GO KIRBY!

For sure Wolf!

This is from just a little bit ago. Big thanks to Ferris for hosting the pic. So I could share it (kind of stuck on my iPod).

Kirby is holding his own. And was very happy to see us. Well, one of us anyway. He gave Shel the butt. Wouldn't look at her at all. He would wag his tail a little when she'd scratch his ear though.

Poor little dude has staples up one side of his butt and down the other side. He's going to be sore for several day's. It sounds like, he will be making a full recovery. Which makes us very happy, happy, happy!

Thank you BadWeb'ers!

Sounds like the little football got stitched back up reeeeel guuud!!!!

Good news!

Veterinary docs do great work.

I had a weird, true, and strangely provoking thought yesterday, whilst reading this thread...

I work in the restaurant biz. It is AMAZING what the pharma companies blow dollar wise for doctor dindins, daily. This is routinely taken for granted, for shame, IMHO.

Veterinary docs, to my knowledge, don't get such treatment.
Yet, we treat our pets as family... simply because they ARE.

I might suggest that anyone who has a trusted, treasured veterinary doctor, try to take the time and effort to send a card, maybe a GC to a good dinner... anything to reciprocate the good work they do.

Once my garden gets going, and we start canning up homemade pasta sauce and stuff, gonna drop some off for our vet doc and office.

Kirby Update:

He’s been resting most of the day. You can tell he’s sore but you can see in his eye’s, he feels much better. He’s been mumbling lot’s today. Almost like’s he’s trying to communicate with us. To either say he’s happy to be home or thank you.

Since he is such a mama’s dog, Shel is going to be staying with him down stairs. So he doesn’t have to climb the stairs or try to jump up on our mile high bed. Thankfully we have a couch that is kind of comfortable.

The Kirb managed a few roll over’s for a belly rub earlier and has a good appetite. All very positive things. He has to go back in to have the staples removed and full check up in seven day’s. the doc said, she expects a full recovery.

Its good to have him home and comfortable again. Even though he was only gone for a short time, the house was empty without him.

Kirby Update:

His day was spent today lounging. We've been really trying hard to keep thing's overly calm around the house, so he doesn't get too excited. The biggest challenge, keeping the little terrorist Bandit from causing chaos...We can tell Kirb's shaved, stapled butt is healing. All he want's is, for it to be scratched. Last night was another restless night for him though. Its like he can't get comfortable. Not in any pain though, which is a good thing.

He's got a good appetite and is taking in lots of fluids. Just before his surgery and after. He is really mumbling a lot. Its hard to explain. Its kind of like a growl but not a growl, if that makes sense. And its prolonged, as if he's talking. Pretty funny stuff, especially when we scratch his butt and he stretches out. Been calling him a butt slut, but I said that in front of a neighbor I shouldn't of (not thinking, which I do often). And got a very nasty look. So now, I am trying not to say that. : )

The last 13 day's have been a crazy ride. And we couldn't of gotten through it, without all of you. The giving, well wishes and prayer's for little dude, was absolutely amazing.

And leave it to a goofy eyed, happy-go-lucky pooch named Kirby. To remind me it's ok to believe in hope once again. Something I struggled with and lost, after getting sick myself.
