Hi guys, I got offered a 1998 Buell S1 for my bike, with some cash on top. I have an 05 Hayabusa and I'm looking for 4800 for it, and he has the Buell with 73,000 miles on it with tstorm heads, a redone bottom end at 68k, new jugs pistons and cam. What sort of cash should I ask for on top? I really would have rather had an XB12R or even 1125R but if I can get a fair deal, worst thing that happens is I sell the S1. I don't really know what would be a fair offer to him, can you guys help me out? Thanks! |

'98 S1's typically go for between $3,500-4,500 in good condition. The 98's are a bit more desirable since they came with the T'storm heads. Mint condition and/or nicely upgraded examples can go around $5K. You sometimes see non-T'storm S1's listed for $3000-$3500. If you're asking $4,800 for your bike then his S1 + $1000 might be fair. thats a lot of miles Only to people who don't ride much. Do the math. It's a 15 year old bike with 75,000 miles. It was only ridden 5,000 miles a year. I put 60,000 miles on my 98 S3-T in two years, and when the engine was taken down, it had less than .003" wear on the cylinder walls. That engine should be good for years. |

75,000 isn't really a big deal. It just proves it was taken care of. My X1 has 87K or something on it now and still puts a big dumb grin on my face. |

Your bike plus $1000 sounds good IMHO. As long as you feel its fair its all good. Sounds like it basically has a new engine. |

I would wait for the machine that you think you really want. An S1 is great, but it's quite different from an XB. And inevitably you will still be drawn to the machine that you want. |

Depends how it's rode. If it has been rode like a cruiser 75K is no big deal. If its been rode like a sportbike its better days are likely well behind it. |

...and I second 99's sentiments. |

"redone bottom end at 68k, new jugs pistons and cam" So the motor only has 5K on it. |

...and I second 99's sentiments. I tend to agree, especially if the OP isn't fully aware of the performance difference between the Busa and the Tuber. To say that they are very different animals is almost an understatement. |

The 98's are a bit more desirable since they came with the T'storm heads. Just the S1W White Lightning(very special bike) and the S3 Thunderbolt came with the Thunderstorm heads in 98. In 99 all tubers had them. |

>performance difference Oh I'm aware. I've come to realize that raw speed is no match for the feel of the bike. I rode an XB12R and was hooked immediately, at the time I had a '93 CBR900RR and an '03 R1. I never should have sold that Honda for the same reason. |

>Only to people who don't ride much No, I'm fully aware that a bike with high miles is a good thing, my busa has 30k, my R1 had 38k, and my CBR had 50k. They're strung out engines but they carry far less load than a car. I understand what they're capable of, but I've always been under the impression that tuber Buells were not known for their reliability. I have no problem having a bike with 100k on the clock, I just want to know that it's capable of maintaining itself through those miles and not being the one putting them on can be cause for concern. |

Fair enough, at least you have your eyes open to what you are doing then. I saw a brand new XB12 being traded after a HD dealer told him that if he wanted fast, get the XB12 because it was bigger than the 1125. The poor guy didn't get what he was looking for at all (no HD dealers around here allow test rides) and probably has a very bad image of Buells as a result. Congratulations to you for understanding the charm of this animal. Many can't see it. Hope you find the bike you fall in love with. |

I'd say grab the S1 (which will install Permagrin), then get an XB (there's plenty about) when the right deal presents. Warning! being a two-Buell person causes an automatic upgrade from Permagrin to Ultragrin. |
