Been looking at Ural sidecar rigs for awhile. I know they're slow and primitive. It would be used for Sunday rides, backroad touring, grandkids, etc. Anybody have any experience or words of wisedom? |

I don't have one but it seems you're aware of it's limitations. If all you used it for was giving rides to the grandkids then consider it money well spent. I think wearing some period correct gear would add to the cool-factor. Kids have two grandpas so you might as well be the "fun" one. |

Thinking about one myself. - Fer crying out loud, I'm 70 + while on the road miss the wife & dog. Had an internet chat w/ an owner. - Lives in Colorado. says he & the old-lady ride all over the mountains. The BadWeatherBikers of Urals, (only been there once) - Seems like a good site http://www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/ Keep us posted |

The corporate headquarters for import is in Redmond Washington, my back yard. Did a term paper for my international import / export class on them; and have several extended demos on them. Jonesing for something like the St - but it is still to heavy for the riding I like to do. they are Soviet Tank stupid/reliable (take that as you will) don't forget the 2wd capability, riding in the winter to snow camps, bon fires and frozen holiday get togethers is the best ! |

It sounds like it would definitely fit the bill for you, Buellmeister. Think there are at least two badwebbers that own (owned) Urals: one gentleman from the Atlanta area (swordsman?)and Laird from Florida (paintshaker). I've taught several Sidecar/Trike classes with students who used Urals. They are a blast, but mpgs are in the mid-30's and in comparison to most 2 wheelers and a lot of other hacks, they are slow so many people avoid interstates when operating a Ural. One class in the Twin Cities, four of six rigs were Urals. They seem very popular with Minnesotans. Seems the newer the rig, the more reliable. While Can Am Spyders were dropping like flies in the heat, I've never seen a mechanical problem with a Ural during a two day, hot as snot class in Florida. |

Firemanjim used to use one for in-town and short haul parts chasing but they ditched it. You might get a good take on it from Jim - espcially since he's a TUNER. Be interesting to know why they didn't keep it. http://www.jtsperformance.com/jtscssabout.html |

I used to have one.. I stumbled across it while lost on a business trip in Richmond Va. & had to have it. It was an interesting machine, I never registered it just slapped a plate on it & used as a short errand bike, & to ride the kiddies around the neighborhood. I don't think I would have rode it too far from home. Just my experience. It was a quirky thing for sure, but it did grab attention.

Fltwistygirl Can you provide a link to the Sidecar/Trike classes? Do they make sidecar rigs available? Never driven a side hack, not sure I would enjoy it (positive would hate a trike), Would not mind paying to rent or lease one for awhile; willing to travel. |

99savage- Check my profile for the link for S/TEP classes in Florida. They offer the class and rentals at the Lake County location. If it was me taking the class, I'd wait until the weather cooled off a bit, but that's just me . Have fun!!! B. |

I've had a 1995 Ural with a 2008 motor/trans/rear/engine electronics for a little over a year. The acceleration sucks. The handling sucks and the braking sucks. It is absolutely the MOST FUN I've had on a street legal motorcycle!!!! I've logged over 11,000 klicks on the klock. I've ridden 300 plus miles in a single day with it several times. The service intervals are short (2500 klicks). Stupid simple to work on. Only had minor issues with it; headlight burned out. loose wiring type stuff. Parts are readily available in the US. Dealer support is spotty (kinda like Buell back in the day), but there are several reputable dealers throughout the US. I happen to live near one of the best! It's has selectable 2WD to the sidecar and a true reverse gear in it. The Soviet Steeds website contains a wealth of information on them. ADV Rider also has some info on them. Any specific questions, just ask. |
