Anybody ever heard of this one? Neighbor has a 50cc quad I sold him a while back. Suzuki Z50. It is now having problems with cold starts. Warm, runs great, starts great. But cold, it won't catch, acts like it's not getting fuel. Here is the really whacked part though. When it is cold and won't start, I can turn the screw to drain the fuel bowl, seal the screw back up, let the bowl refill, and up it fires. I've cleaned the carb three times now, and the float level is set perfectly. Fresh plugs, clean air filter, intake and exhaust valves adjusted, no exhaust blockages. Thoughts? |

If you don't take into account the temporary fix, it sounds like a slight intake leak somewhere. That is pretty easy and quick to check. Bad fuel possibly? |

I can turn the screw to drain the fuel bowl, seal the screw back up, let the bowl refill, and up it fires. What kind of pet c o c k does it have is it vacuum operated on / off with a selector? no fuel flow, drain bowl, ( opens feed valve ) bowl fills, unit works ok.. trash in gas or debris in tank? part misaligned in bowl? } |

We tested petcock (vacuum operated, suprising for a 50cc quad) and it flows like crazy on prime or with even just a vacuum pulled by cranking engine when it isn't starting. And prime or normal doesn't make a difference when it won't start... it won't start. I took the carb apart again for about the 11ty millionth time and cleaned every last pinhole... we will find out what it does about the cold start tomorrow morning. It runs and starts beautifully warm. |

Be sure to defenestrate it, then all will be well. |

I don't think quads run windows. |

Quad-cores do. Just open the window first. Everything will be copacetic, you'll see. |

Well, it started OK cold this morning with just a little throttle. Who knows what carb voodoo helped. God Bless fuel injection. |

The one thing people very often miss is crankseals. The scenario you described is a typical one when crankseals start to fail. Hopefully though as per your last post the gremlin is gone. |

Good point about crank seals, but it's a 4 stroke. I think that's a 2 stroke phenomena. And I actually had he timing cover off to adjust the valves, and no sign of weeping, so I think they are OK regardless. I probably should check the timing. I suppose that could be a confounding factor. |

The only thing I can think of is the slow speed jet might be partially blocked. When warm it's running lean but running. When cold it's way too lean. Does it run alright once it starts cold? |

I believe you got it on your last cleaning regimen. I had a similar (frustrating) issue with my lawn edger. A couple of double doses of SeaFoam did the trick for me. |

I too would be thinking intake leak. Maybe not sealing too well with all of the times off and back on? |
