Well I actually got something done on it over the weekend! A new telescoping super heavy duty steering shaft out of a big truck with actual universal joints rather than cross pins and a rag joint.

Took it out for a test in the rain. Wet grass is fun!

Hey Mark, I am actually looking into making it qualify for the Jamboree rules. All of my lights and brakes are good. A windshield wiper switch, couple of ball joints, and some tires will get me street legal in Tennessee.

I am going to add some cross members and a belly pan/skid plate, as well as a fan shroud. No radio or CD player though. A CB.....but no radio.

Let me know homey!

What??.....That would be like inviting me to ride bitch on your Uly at a Buell Rally!

Now if you needed a SPOTTER.....that could be a real possibility, if of course, my Jeep would not qualify when I bring it to an event. I could navigate, beer tend, and run the radio to!

So for the Mental Note File for the other Jeepers here on Badweb...

Yes, it IS possible to spin a 720 at 65 mph in a '92 YJ with 2" lift and 31's...without flipping it over.

Driving to work yesterday, I run a 4 lane divided highway, southbound. Have to turn across northbound lanes to get to my job. Pull into the left hand "exit" lane to make my turn. Step on the brakes - not a damn thing. Nothing but a red light on the dash (as if I didn't notice the fact I have no brakes).

Car that was behind me is to my right now so I have nowhere to go. There's a car next to him. I'm committed to the turn...or transitioning from pavement to a grassy, depressed, frozen median at 65 mph.

I turned. Into oncoming lanes. The oncoming 18 wheeler was - thankfully - 500 yards away and not 50. The roads are also thankfully covered in salt - I think if I had clean pavement and grip...I'd have flipped.

Ended up missing the road I was turning onto (duh). Spun across the fast lane, across the slow lane, and came to rest in the northbound exit lane for the road I was trying to turn onto.

Once I un-puckered, I moved the Jeep off the highway and popped the hood. Engine is COVERED in brake fluid. Definitely popped something. But...with temps in the teens and wind speeds in the 30s, I'm not messing with it just yet. Towed it home, in the garage it sits. I'll deal with it later : )

Glad you missed everybody out there.....damn!

Did you have people stop to ask what happened?

I was screaming...but not exactly "yee-haw"...

Nope. Nobody stopped. Although the cute little blonde in the 7-11 next door was incredibly distressed when she learned it was me in the jeep...she saw it happen and said it was a little freaky to watch. I told her the front row seats were even worse.

And I finally found the popped line. Left front hard line where it makes a 100 degree bend on the frame rail under the air box.

92 YJ. Emailed my parts guy...line still available. Ordered and arrived. Prevent, ends on it, ready to install....a whopping $20.

Beats the hell out of bending and flaring!

I hope your fittings are not rusted in too bad. Was the tube rusted off?

Looks like next weekend is going to be nice here. Might be a Jeep work fest day in there if I can get caught up with work.

Hey Vern, et al- our local weekly rag has this piece about a local mudder:

I have been thinking about changing my 1972 Rochester two barrel with cast iron intake to a 1987 multiport injection set up off from a Firebird.

The 400 cu. in. Chevy with it's 2bbl runs fine with the whole set up being about torque and simplicity. Heck, this engine will run with only one + wire to the distributor and fuel. It does really well, accelerates great, goes near vertical before it sputters at all.

But then nah! This engine has no sensors to fail in the mud, or wires and connectors to corrode or break from abuse. I can run through deep water without the worry of a computer module filling with water. The only worries there are water in the engine or a wet distributor.

The only real advantage might be that with injection it would be able to run upside down. If it gets that way I am going to shut it off anyway.

Never mind! Brain fart over, nothing to see her folks, go back to your business.

the desire to tinker, I know what you are talking about Vern.... every time I'm about to do something to my Jeep something else comes up.

DR650 put a huge dent in the Jeep tinker pocket book.
A few weeks ago I stopped in one of the local fab shops to talk custom bumper.
I was about to pull the trigger when the Durango decide its time for a new oil pan and rear dif seal.....

We need warm weather now! Being stuck in the house tends to get the mind to start wandering

What a beautiful weekend here in East Tennessee! I worked through most of it but today I got to play for a couple of hours. My son and I have our little "monster 4x4s" running and had a great time hammering down our test course.

Having 38" and 39" tires kinda makes our little 8' mounds into speed bumps after a couple of passes.

Looks like a heap o' Jeepin fun!

FWIW, neighbor 2 doors down is selling a pretty nice rail buggy, street-legal, with what might be a hotted-up VW motor- it's got a pair of 2bbl carbs, no telling about the displacement... looks like fun tho!

So for the mental note file (again) - when you hit a dip in your 160k mile YJ and you hear a "clunk" followed by a scraping sound, that would be the front half of your fuel tank skidplate finally breaking where it has rusted through, and it dropping down like an air-brake to "sweep" the pavement as you drive.

Also of note, when the skidplate drops...the only thing holding the fuel tank in the Jeep is fuel lines, a filler neck grommet, and happy thoughts.

And now, a ratchet strap while I await my new skidplate from Quadratec.

That is all.

I hate when that happens!

You poor salt encrusted Northerner. Being in the body shop business, you remind me why I moved South many years ago.

I so do like having my Florida body CJ.

Had about 10 jeeps at my place this last Saturday. Got to see two new things, a Land Rover DIscovery roll onto it's side and a Warn winch actually explode! The gearcase from the winch shot about 10ft and bounced off of a tree. Wish you guy's were closer we wheel every other weekend.

Joe, did you get that fuel tank/skid plate back together?

I am going to try to focus on tidying up some loose ends on my CJ in the near future. I have some events that I want to enter this summer. My Vette project seems to be absorbing my Jeep project time lately, but I have not minded too much, that B-W Super T10 4 speed is a blast at Vette rallies in these Tennessee mountains.

Skid plate is here...in a box...in the kitchen. Haven't had time to monkey with it yet. Perhaps this weekend - no shows, catching up on yardwork so I may actually be ahead of the game this weekend (shhhhhhh.....!).
