I have a '98 Explorer AWD w/the air adjustable ride control and a leaking front shock. What I need to know is can you replace the electronic ride control shock with a standard air shock if you replace both on the front. A new OE replacement is beyond my wallet at this time, and the junk yards don't have any.

I would really like to get this thing back on the road. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like you can use the Monroe 40005 air shock on your vehicle. You will retain the ride height feature but would loose the electronic adjustability.

The Westar AS7401 air shock which Auto Zone carries is an option. It's more expensive than the Monroe.
same deal, no electronic adjustability.

Good luck.

I repaired an air bag (spring) on my old Lincoln Mk VII with Slime... lift the car, *make sure the bag is not pressurized* disconnect the airbag solenoid, remove the retaining clip, remove the solenoid, I had to use a piece of tubing to feed it down into the air bag, i used clear vinyl tubing so I could be sure it was getting in there.

The air spring on my car had developed cracks at the lower portion of the bag, where it folds back under itself at regular ride height. Once the spring reinflated then, I shut the car off and let the Slime settle it sealed the cracks up in the air spring, and I was able to replace the blown shocks.

Whatever option you go with check out Rockauto.com for prices. You can get the exact same parts and brand names as napa/autozone/ect except the parts cost 60-80% less shipped.

One of my neighboring shops has been a bit of an expert shop rebuilding Expeditions. I can check with him for ideas and left over parts that might fit your Explorer. I will get back with ya.

Found him! He has used all of his good parts and is short of what he needs for what he is repairing. He does the bigger Expeditions and wasn't sure if it would fit your explorer size vehicle. But no matter, with no invtory.....no parts to sell. Sorry.

I hope you have found something by now.

Convert it to the standard suspension. I often have customers opt for that option seeing as parts for the electronic suspension can get pricey. If you are going to do just the front turn the suspension off (switch in cargo area near jack).
IIRC the springs/torsion bars are the same for both electronic and standard suspension on the exploder.

XB, yes you can use a shock to replace the units in the front. Those have a torsion bar front suspension so the air units just gets swapped out. It does not have to be an air shock. You will have to disconnect the upper a-arm to remove and replace, but you must take the tension off of the torsion bars first.

The back however you have to change out the bags with coil springs, source them at your junk yard. It is a popular swap so they may be tough to find.
