Aesquire, I've (my ex-wife and I) have hosted four exchange students (two German, one Italian, one Malaysian) and they were always shocked about how big the country was and why we don't have better trains! |

We briefly had an exchange student from the Netherlands a couple years back. She was adamant that she could drive to Las Vegas within a day from Upstate NY.......because a character did it on Prison Break......she saw it on TV so it must be possible.... No amount of facts could convince her otherwise, even no access to a vehicle and no license. Her retort was she'd just hitchhike. The other plan was to just scoot down to NYC for a weekend without any reservations or anyone to guide her about. Too bad her stay in the New World was cut short after an extreme solo drinking binge where the wife discovered her comatose on the bathroom floor, BAC over two hours later at the ER was .28. Pretty impressive at that point she was coherent and somewhat cognitive. The hosting agency was NOT impressed and had her on a plane within a week. Too bad, nice kid and was looking forward to learning more about her culture and country. Sorry for the highjack, hope your journey to the New World is smooth Grumpy. Just spent a week in Downeast Maine (Lubec) last month. Second year in a row to visit the Bay of Fundy, alas no moto content because no matter how capable the Uly is it can't transport the entire family and gear for a week's adventure. Would love tour that country on two wheels. New Foundland? That would be nice. |

Our kid from Malaysia went on a pretty bad drug/drinking bender once. The agency wouldn't even send him home, they found another placement for him and that was it. He still might be here somewhere... The kids from Germany were pretty cool. The Italian was really coddled and it took a while for him to realize that we weren't servants. |

Mme G decided that she wanted to spend a day visiting the west coast of Newfoundland when we were staying at Bill's a few years back. It took a while for her to grasp the concept that it was a whole days drive just to cross the island. |

Update. Had a mail yesterday, I'm APPROVED!! Papers should be here sometime next week by Fedex. Then the logistical nightmare can begin. |
