What do you use to store passwords, user names, security questions?

Seems like I have a ton of them, and I keep them in a notebook, which i'm not that happy with. Something on-line would be nice if I wanted access when I'm not at home.

I am considering Password Safe.

Appreciate any ideas/suggestions.

Brad.

I like keepass. now I only have one password to remember. it can also be set up to automatically type (not copy/paste) your password with a shortcut key. the database sits on my dropbox account so I can get to it.

get the version 2.X, if it will run on your computer it has some better features.

There are versions and/or compatible programs for just about any computing device out there.

I've yet to use this system, but I'm going to.

All the common tricks to remember, are bad security, since, duh, everyone does them.

Such as "all passwords are "word"+number/letter suffix" ( like Buell78k ) are easy to guess and hack. I'm guilty of that one.

If you're a known fan of something, ( YankeesRule18 ) or have a toy, ( ChallngerQ99 ) Easy to guess.

I don't have a problem with the idea of a paid online backup system, or a password service, Just haven't used them.

Thanks for the ideas. I just can't remember them all any more.

Just post them up here on Badweb. If you forget a password then all you have to do is ask any one of us.

"Keeper" is a decent IPhone app that will do it, but you have to constantly dodge nagging to upgrade and work hard to keep it from putting your encrypted info on their servers (which I don't want it to do)...

I use Keepass extensively and recommend it to the users I support. I have just under 200 username/password combinations in my personal domain. I have similar numbers in my work domain. Those two domains should not be mixed. Besides using difficult to guess and impossible to remember passwords I also try to expire the most critical ones.

Keepass lets you store additional sensitive information and use the auto-type/paste feature for custom fields without ever revealing the keystrokes on screen or keyboard. My credit cards information is stored this way and I never type my numbers in. I also use it to store software activation keys, etc. You can use a long phrase and/or a key file to unlock the database. Even if you don't use it to its maximum security standards you can increase your security above a simple password protected file, or heaven forbid a piece of paper.

I'm glad you are asking for help. Your online security is up to you to ignore or take control of and many of us are happy to help you do that.

J2blue,

Thanks for the info. Is the data stored on your computer, or is it online and available when you are not at home? That's interesting about the credit card info, and not typing that in, as well.

Brad.

I have an old envelope in the living room covered in chickenscratch.

My browser autofills most.

If I'm away from home...chances are I don't need "that one" until I get home. As long as I have my ATM PIN...I can get home : )

Gotta be a pitch for a home safe. Note book in a closed locked hardened safe has got to let you sleep better at night if these things worry you.

Would it not be easier for hackers to go directly to files named "passwords" or "Security files" to hack them?

I knew a guy years ago who wrote his passwords on a note book sheet with a magic marker. He would then take a picture of the page, then label it with a silly baby name and put it in a file with thousands of baby pictures. No E file ext for "passwords" to find. Thousands of worthless pictures to flip through to find a page that didn't stick out.

It's stored in a file. that file can be put on a USB stick, or you can put it on your Dropbox/skydrive/icloud/whatever account so that you can easily synchronize it. or you can put the file on your phone and use a compatible app.

I use Excel 2007. It is encrypted and as long as you use a complicated password, it's very difficult for anyone to crack. At least as far as I know. This isn't true of older forms of excel but 2007 and newer have minimum 128 BIT encryption.
