I've been at my company for a little over 7 years and have been trying to work on a promotion for the last 4 or 5. Things were finally starting to feel like they might be coming together last year, but then a bout of downturns crushed that again. Despite having many colleagues and customers (internal) who loved me and preferred to work with me over other members of my team, I still had a new manager I didn't really care for, a coworker who would take any opportunity to toss me in front of the bus and a dwindling and mind-numbingly simple list of responsibilities. It all came to a head yesterday morning, "Your position has been eliminated". 2 others in my building and about 20 more in other locations all got the ax. I really was never treated very well by the company and it really wasn't a very good match for me, anyway. I was already looking a bit and have been on a handful of interviews in the past couple months. They did give me a decent package so at least I'm not out to dry for a little bit yet. I'm mostly just pissed they couldn't do it on a Friday so I could have gone and celebrated, or when it was warmer out. I'd be halfway to California on a bike right now if it weren't freezing rain outside my window... BTW, I live in the Albany, NY area and most of my experience is in a Business Analyst role, though I'm open to anything interesting at this point - could be time for a career change. Message me for a resume if you know of anything. I'm not looking forward to being unemployed (for the first time in my life), but I plan on making the best of the extra time I'll have. I have some exciting music projects going on right now and might find myself recording in Nashville next month if I play my cards right. Who knows, I might be world famous soon! |

Wow- buddy, that both sucks and kinda doesn't suck, from what I gathered in the OP... Good luck- once this crappy door has shut behind ya, BOLO for the next good door you can walk through with your shiny shoes on! And- gimme a holler if/when you head to Nashvegas, better yet give Fatty and Barker a holler. Lots of fun to be had there nowadays. I regularly head to this site on Thursdays when they publish, always good reads to be had: http://www.nashvillescene.com/ |

Wow, like squid said, it sucks, and kinds doesn't suck. I'm not sure what a business analyst does, or your family status. If your single, maybe it's time to hit the road? I used to live north of you, in Glens Falls. Hated the brutal winters back in the 70's. Live in the southwest now, and love it. Riding ALL year round. Good luck in your search, It can only get better! |

Sometimes the very best thing that happens to you is initially the worst thing that could happen to you. I hope you find something you like to do. Don't limit yourself to just what you've done in the past. I am doing something completely different than I did for 16 years and love it. Look at EVERY option and industry. |

Get the h' out of NY, get as far away as you can and still be on the same planet. Saddle up and ride until you get to Texas. We sure don't have squat and suspect we will have still less in the near future. |

It definitely doesn't suck nearly as bad as it could. I would have preferred to find another position in another team in the same company mostly because the benefits are very good, they give me the option of working from home, my commute is 1.5 miles if I do go into the office and the give me more vacation time than anyone else I know my age, and nearly as much as people like my father who have been at their company for 25 years or something. Getting the can and being handed a check like this (depending on the tax implications, it could carry me into October paying myself what I'm making now) is the 2nd best outcome, in my eyes. We sure don't have squat and suspect we will have still less in the near future. Fortunately, there seems to be a lot of postings for Business Analyst roles in my area. The only drawback is they're usually contract based, which I'd like to avoid. If your single, maybe it's time to hit the road? This has crossed my mind - I'm single, no kids, but I do have a live-in girlfriend that I'd hate to leave behind. I'd love to get out west, but I'm also a skier so Colorado would be where it's at for me. However, I do have a house I'd need to sell in order to do that and I don't anticipate I'd make any money on that deal, either. Don't limit yourself to just what you've done in the past. I'm not, but I've got some soul searching to do to figure out what else I can go for. Pretty much anything that will sit me behind a desk and in front of a computer for 8 hours a day is going to rot my brain. I'd like to get on my feet doing something, preferably outside, and actually 'doing' or 'making' something. What? I have no idea yet, but that would be the goal. I wish being a ski instructor and an MSF RiderCoach would pay my bills but they won't. And will do Squids - not sure if they're going to ask me to come down or not since I'm pretty new with these guys, but I'd love it if the did... |

Business Analysis and Revenue Cycle Management are huge in Health Care field .... Which I understand is also big in Nashville. Go give them a hell of a fight and what for, they are all struggling for ideas on how to attract cash paying customers and not the Medicare / Medicaid forced allocation that they just got saddled with. Pharma and DME are looking for ways to maximize as well - most of the production and research is headed overseas - but the sales direction, market plans, ad campaigns and channel execution are all staying domestic. Good luck |
