Do any of you... at your chosen place of employment have a kind of "Friends to Friends" network? A voluntary program where you can donate to a fund to help fellow employees in bad times. They even do raffles to raise money for the fund. I tend to buy raffle tickets when they come around. Never won anything. Today, I got a little surprise in the mail. A check, from them, which will cover my missed time due to my recent get-off. Never thought that I would be a recipient. At a loss for words at the moment |

My workplace has a similar scheme. They promote it internally & I contribute when I can. (Raffle tickets, cookouts etc'.) I've never had call to apply for any benefits from it but it's nice to know it's there if you need it. I like the idea of everyone helping anyone else out if they need help. Chris C |

Never ran into the likes of it but might be a good idea, now more than ever it is the time for us to hang together so as not to hang individually. Anything to help promote community |

We have the Voulentary Fund.We ususally donate every Sat. if we are working and even if you are not a member of our local and you donate someone can send in a letter for you and you recieve benefits.Usually $1500.00 and at the end of the year you get a statement and it is tax deductable. My travel trailer burned down on the way to NV and someone sent in a letter for me and it really helped out.I think it also kind of promotes Brotherhood in my line of work. |

On another bike board a member started a "rider down" fund. He ended up getting the big one from the irs... Anyone who starts one of these help funds; get legal advice before going forward. As no good deed goes unpunished when it comes to the government. |

I've worked with many good groups in the workplace who collectively would look after individuals that hit upon hard times... shows that we CAN work together to help folks when needed. And- what Teeps said. Nothing I've ever witnessed got to be huge $$$, but I can see where the tax man might put the hairy eyeball on ya... |

The problem lies in who collects/handles the funds. In the case of the other board member, he took donations in through his paypal account. To the irs it looked like, personal income, of which was not reported... big trouble. So, if the collections are small, taken only in cash, with no paper trail. The help fund will probably fly below irs radar. |
