I'd seen people on here use Pelican boxes for a top box on their Buells, specifically Im thinking about my 1125R I am wanting to get something that's lockable, so I can ride to school and store my jacket in the box. I have already bought a spare rear seat to strip and use as a base for this project What I am interested in from the experts here: -What other options should I be looking for? -What will I need to do to properly/safely/securely mount this to the seats base plate? What else will I need to buy? and do? -Any reason for NOT doing this? I am only looking at hauling my bookbag in it, and currently it weighs 20lbs, so its not a lot of weight to add to the bike. I do need something lockable and water tight |

cant speak for the top boxes - but their side cases are water resistant (yes, some posture will get through if you always riding in the rain, mud, and have a penchant for dropping the bike on its case in less than paved areas) a good book bag inside will keep your stuff from getting wet. and the locks are pretty resilient too mine were mounted with 1/2 fender bolts and large washers from the hardware store low tech, but worked well. if you go that route don't forget to water proof the area from washer to bolts |

You can get rubber faced washers to mount it with. Most agri-suppliers have them, gives you some mounting flexibility & water resistance at the same time. The ADV Rider crowd seem to rate Pelican pretty highly. |

I currently have one on the back of my CR its not a giant pelican case, its only big enough to hold 3 soda cans but I just wanted something water tight for my wallet and cell phone. All I did to mount it was screw it to the seat. I didn't even strip the foam and vinyl off. I didnt like the way the naked seat pan looked since the box itself was not big enough to cover the hole seat. If you look on the bottom of the seat pan there are a few impressions from the mold that were PERFECT for the head of a 1/4-20 button head bolt. I just drilled up and into my box. I did have to put the heads on the bolts on the bottom so the seat would click back on. I just put Acorn nuts on top of the nylock nuts I used so there would be anything sharp. My only regret is not going with a little bit bigger box so that I could bring another seat with me so I could remove it from the bike and not leave a "hole" in the tail but it sounds like you are planing on that. I'll try to take some pictures of it tonight. |

I bought a spare seat with the same intention... I'd be interested in seeing how others have done it! |

My first thought was actually to attach a flat base to the spare seat... kind of a dock with multiple holes to bungee a waterproof duffel or something to. Anybody tried something like that? |

I'm pretty sure Sekalilgai has/had one mounted up on his 1125 (can't recall whether CR or R type). and there was some pics or discussion on it a year or two back. I'll see if I can turn up a link or pictures for you. |

Put a small top box on a spare seat pan back when I owned an 1125R. Wasn't a pelican case, but it worked fine.
