Well I finally took the plunge and got away from the blackberry, and got a RAZR m. Still learning my way around it but so far I think its gonna work out.

I'm looking for some mail help though. I have 4 active accounts between personal and various jobs. I have them all set up and coming in, but the OE mail setup is clunky as hell to work with. I tried K9 mail and love the features but it wasn't getting messages that had already popped up on both my desktop and the OE mail app. If anyone has any tips or suggestions for a good mail app I'd love to hear it. I don't sync contacts or calendars but I prefer a unified inbox display and the ability to delete on the phone but leave untouched on the server. I'm used to different alert tones for each account so I don't want to give that up. and if anyone has any basic "care and feeding" tips for the platform and the physical device, I welcome all the advice I can get. I'm going to check out some of the android forums as well...once I get a chance.

...

Me too- both the GF's phone and mine crapped out recently, and we ended up with two Samsumg Illusion phones- we're NOT heavy data users, 3G will be more than plenty- but, I'd like to know about the better forums for tutorials and cheep/free apps, so I can get the most out of these things.

I have a Razor Maxx,.. its ok. I have a yahoo, comcast and gmail. The gmail does not combine. The email sjortcut openes whever pop boxes you have installed, (yahoo, comcast, hotmail) which you can view as one or open seperately... I am not sure if you can make that a permanant feature) The Gmail is seperate.. I only have one gmail in my phone and am not sure if you can have more than one gmail in ur phone.

Apps of the top of my head would be:

Google Talk (+ videochat)
MyTracks
Xfinity player
Quickoffice
DROIDFORUMS
Barcode Scanner
Bugs Bunny soundboard

I also have the car dock and an hdmi cable, all work great. The battery lasts pretty long compared to my 3g DroidX. It is a smarter phone and knows when to go into power save mode.

I have a razr maxx
I have two gmail accounts (personal and college account)
what I like about the gmail is once both are logged into the phone, you'll get separate notifications plus you can easily switch between accounts in gmail, takes only a second

As far as I'm concerned, there is no free e-mail app for android that's worth its salt. I came from iPhone, and I gotta say, they had the email thing down really well. I tried the Gmail app and the K9 app, and either didn't like them or they were extremely slow to get messages, so I'm still using the native Samsung mail app. It's clunky as well, but at least everything shows up in a timely manner. My main complaints with it are I usually have to delete a message 2-3 times before it actually deletes from my account (keeps coming back in as a new message) and nothing seems to support push mail, which is odd to me.

You can have multiple google accounts - I have 3 on my phone right now, all work fine and can easily switch between them for mail, calendar, contacts, etc.

Some apps worth having:
Pandora
Lookout
GSam Battery Monitor
CPU Spy
Zedge
Netflix

so if I want to use one of the email apps that I installed but not another...can I turn them off? delete them?

The "manual" that came with the phone...well...sucks.

I've been zedge'ing by way of my laptop, and copying them onto the SD card. Weird though, I have to copy the sounds into three separate folders to get them to show up in various places on the phone - ring tones folder, alerts folder, and notifications folder. Or should I just drag them bare onto the card and the phone will find them, in order to save storage space?

Not gonna mess with Pandora since I have a portable Sirius that I can use in all vehicles. Since I lost unlimited data in the "upgrade", I don't want to log too much until I know where I stand, usage versus limits. Guy said I used .11GB/month before and they allow 2GB on the plan...we'll see.

GMail works great for me. I get GMail updates as fast on the phone as I do on the computer. It's a simple matter to have GMail read ALL of your E-Mail accounts and filter it to your phone (which is what I do). That part of the setup does have to be done from a real computer logged into GMail, though.

You can set it up to read your other E-Mail accounts and leave the message on the original server too (which is what I think you said you wanted to do above). Your E-mails are clearly identified with their source servers, too. Only caveat is, if you respond from the phone, it will have your default "Reply To" address. Although GMail is my primary E-Mail account these days, my Reply-To address is different... but you can only have ONE Reply-To address as far as I know.

I am not 100% about this but a few apps require a google ID and to sign in,... if you have multiple gmails accounts, you sign out of one ID into another (to get your other email) don't you also sign out of the google ID completely?? ugh... u got me?? (hopefully someone gets what I mean) Or is that just Google Play (to get apps) messing with me??

I only have one gmail but will probably add a couple if I feel I can get a handle on it.

I created a gmail account solely for the android app store...it's otherwise dormant. I have an enterprise account through one job, a personal yahoo, and two side-job yahoo's.

My wife and I share a 4G data plan, we're six days from the end of a cycle and we've used .575G combined. If you're around wi-fi it doesn't count against your data usage. Some of the apps I've found useful are:
Gtunes music downloader
Double twist, allows sync of music from itunes.
Color Splash, neat photo editing software.
Pencil Sketch, turns pics into black and white, well, pencil sketches.
Where's my droid, if it's ever lost or stolen.
Tango, for face to face conversation.
Bible, entire bible in several different versions.
And for fun, some addictive games:
Temple run 1 & 2
Candy Crush
Words with friends
Basketball shoot
Fruit Ninja
100 floors
Lane Splitter
Speed Moto
Speed Car
Free Cell
Mega Jump

Everything I've downloaded is free, I did pay for Shutter Fly to download to our account but that's the only one. I've got a 32G card in my phone and have over 4100 songs and over 1700 pics in it and it never runs slow. I've also just got a droid razr not the max. As long as I charge it every night it's good to go.

I've got the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note.

I have 6 gmail accounts on each with their own scalable widgets. I also have 2 POP accounts in the native mail reader, also with their own widgets. Also using Google Voice texting and I have that inbox stacked with the native texting app, and using Groove IP for VoIP.

I have zero issues with any of the mail or texting apps. I'm running 4.0.4 on both devices.

If you're not getting the email as often as you'd like, you need to set your refresh/sync frequency. I've got all mine set to a minute or less due to the fact that my business is so time sensitive, and my batteries last all day long.

What version of Android does your device have? I find both the stock Gmail and Android Email clients to work fine on Honeycomb (3.0) and newer, I don't know if Gingerbread (2.3) has a different client. It is possible that Motorola or your phone company changed the email program out for their own craptastic version.

Yea, but you will find that you will be using more data on Android as there are more data hungry applications. I went from using around 500mb a month on Windows Mobile to 16GB after I started using Android.

Anything that is not preinstalled on the phone you can easily delete, but preinstalled software is "locked" but you don't have to use them, you can set your preferred app to be the default.

On an unrelated note, I do recommend you get Waze naviation, it blows Google/Apple/Garmin out of the water with its live data and smart traffic routing. I don't even use my Zumo anymore except for trip logging, or when I am in a no cell signal zone.

And a WiFi question - if I have WiFi enabled, can that system "see" what I'm doing? (Will work know I'm screwing off and posting on bad web?)

If wifi is enabled but not connected to anything, it won't be broadcasting what you do, so there will be nothing for them to even try and see.

If you are connected to their wifi connection, the answer could be yes, could be no, it depends on their networking equipment and configuration. It would be best to assume that yes they can see it.

Rat - hopefully your phone came with an app called Smart Actions. It will automate stuff like turn GPS on and launch a Nav app whenever you are connected to your car's bluetooth. Turns the stuff back off too when you disconnect.

Second app I would recommend is Torque but it cost like $5 - $10 and requires a OBD2 bluetooth dongle from ebay (~$20). Basically turns your phone into an code scanner and can gather real time data like oil temp, trans temp, coolant temp, speed, gear, etc. Also has a free form equation area so that you can make non standard monitors like fuel consumption, and distance till empty. And if you know what commands to send and can decipher the return response, you can even set up your own monitors for any sensor that is being "watched". Fairly cheap for how powerful it is.

Third app you should get is Bike Race. Surprised no one on a bike board mentioned it yet :-)

Cataract it's dead simple, you drag the bar at the top of the screen with the signal & battery icons on down to open the toolbar.
then tap the one marked data so it's gray not green.
Same for wifi etc, the less you have running the longer your battery lasts.
I have the bluetooth & the auto rotate on all the time, the others when I need them.
