Having spent the last couple of years rearranging nd modernising the Husky lineup (since buying it from MV), and fitting their own engines into the 800 Nuda and new 650 model, BMW have now confirmed that they have sold the Husky brand to KTM!

Where that leaves the engine supply situation for current BMW engined models is anyone's guess of course, and Husky dealers will be more confused than ever : (

Here is the news (PR blurb) as it appeared to the trade today.

The BMW Group is realigning its BMW Motorrad business. In the context of changing motorcycle markets, demographic trends and increasing environmental demands, BMW Motorrad will expand its product offering to exploit future growth potential. The focus of the realignment will be on urban mobility and e-mobility. By restructuring the segment, the BMW Group will concentrate on expanding and utilising the resources of the BMW Motorrad brand. Therefore the BMW Group signed a purchase agreement with Pierer Industrie AG (Austria) for the acquisition of Husqvarna Motorcycles. The acquisition will proceed subject to approval by anti-trust authorities. Both companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price

I was hoping that the Husky Baja Concept would hit the market...
grrr

they have said nothing on their facebook; from either company

So BMW is leaving the adventure market ?.... I really thought that was their core market sector.

I think the success of the BMW maxi scooters have them steering their attention in that direction.

So BMW is leaving the adventure market ?....

The GS line are BMWs adventure bikes (and best sellers)
, and since they just did a complete redesign of the R1200GS I doubt that line is going anywhere.
It is a bit of a surprise though that they decided to sell Husqvarna.

Success? I've seen exactly 4 of them, ever. 2 were at the IMS last year. The other two were at the IMS this year, haha.

They may be selling, but not around here.

Here is what KTM has to say on the matter....

The statement reads:

The new Pierer Industrie AG company has taken over in full Husqvarna Motorcycles (Husqvarna Italy and Husqvarna US) from the BMW Group.

In the next six months ahead, Pierer Industrie AG will evaluate the co-operation potential with the KTM/Husaberg Group.

A relaunch of the Husqvarna brand with a new product range is planned for the international motorcycle exhibition at EICMA 2013.

Doesn't say anything much, but the words 'relaunch of the Husqvarna brand' and no mebtion of current BMW powered models seems strange. Will they continue with the development BMW has ploughed into the company for 2 years, with existing and planned models? Or will they start again with KTM power, leaving NUDA owners bereft of parts and service??

Seems like we will have to wait and see on all counts....EICMA 2013 isn't until September if I remember correctly!

KTM already owns Husaberg. I don't know what they'll gain by taking on Husky.

I thought BMW was smart to buy Husqvarna. It gave them instant credibility in the serious off-road arena after their own 450 didn't sell well.

BMW have a history of buying companies to get a piece of technology or a brand that they want & then selling off the remains a few years down the road.

They did the same with the Rover group, kept the "Mini" name used a lot of the Landrover/Rangerover tech to produce the X5, sold LR to Ford etc etc.

This is just another example, & one of the reasons I won't buy their products.

It is sort of a bummer. I was thinking of trading my KLX 250 up to a Husqvarna 650 this summer. A little concerned about having an orphan bike now.
