The fine folks at Interco.....the makers of the "Super Swampers" and such, are no longer in business, or so I have been told.

Given that, and owning a new set, I had to strike when the iron was hot. I cut them loose for a nice little gain on CL.

The fancy aluminum rims that I acquired had a half worn set of 38.5 x16's on them, so it looks like they will be my tires for some time to come on the Jeep. Even at a little less than half tread this thing crawls, climbs, and grabs in mud and rocks really well. I looked at it this way, the Jeep is in no way intended to be a street ride and as my off road toy I doubt it has seen 500 miles in the past ten years.

The guy who got my tires asked if I had ever measured them for height. I had not. He proved to me that they are fully an inch shorter than advertised on the sidewall. We checked all of the off road tires around my place and found that to be true for all of the brands we have, even new and properly inflated. The factory guys must hit them up to 80 psi to reach the height claimed.

Anybody else notice it is cold outside lately? Damn!

I run treadwright retread all terrain tires. They are supposed to be 33's but measure 32.5". Great tires though for my daily driven wrangler.

All of your tires are like this on inch measurements except Pitbulls. Some are worse than others. On a different note...I ordered a new tire for the front of my backhoe a while back. Made sure I ordered the EXACT same brand, size, ply, etc. The new tire shows up with the same name, size and ply rating...but over 2 inches taller, LOL. The tire shop made it right with me and got me another new tire so I had 2 that were new and matched in size at cost.

Hey, I just measured my BFGs. They are an inch shy.

I did an oil change on the TJ today. 6 and a 1/2 qt. of 10w30 AmsOil synthetic. I went with a Mobil 1 filter. M1-204 is the recommended filter. I went with the M1-301, the larger size filter. They claim it to be a 15,000 mile filter, if you use synthetic oil. I've been riding and hardly used the jeep since last winter. I'm getting it back up to snuff for winter duty.

Vern, If you hunt the forums you can find a chart that has the actual size of the the tire vs advertised.
I think Tire Rack or one of those on line tire stores has it listed.

RD, I just put a Amsoil EAO26-EA filter on my heep. Its about 9" long and filters out 20 microns and holds about a extra quart of oil. Plus I installed a magnetic drain plug that catches some funk.

This past weekend I hit the trifecta of outdoor fun. Did a little hunting with my Dad. Then some major over the logs and thru the woods wheeling to get the deer he shot. Topped off with some off road motorcycle riding. Add in all the good eats, Family time and end it with the Walking Dead. It was a pretty good weekend.

Well this is interesting. Since I got my Jeep running I have been busy with other stuff to the point of not getting things done. Not a real problem since there was no intent to run it other than to "test" it in my back field. Yesterday I had to move the Jeep so I did a lap of the obstacle course that is my back field. The steering shaft end/rag joint broke off from the steering box and slid off from the shaft.

It is one of the things that failed in my testing as of late. I knew it would have to be changed to a universal joint and a telescoping slider on the shaft. Problem is, even knowing exactly where it came off, I can't find it. I need the upper end for the new re-make. You'd think a 4" diameter by 10" long piece of metal shaft would be easy to find laying in short grass. Hmmmmmmm?.

No more testing for now!

It's not that hard if you have the right tools. One tool for cutting the urethane seal between the glass and frame. Tape the old glass to the top of the frame so it doesn't fall and damage paint and body. A pair of large suction cups 6" plus with pump for suction on them, for holding the glass while you and a buddy set the glass. A caulking gun for applying the urethane to the frame. Drill with wire brush for cleaning the surface in the frame. Acidic primer to bite into the metal. another primer for the urethane if the type you get requires it.

Check your insurance policy. It may cover your windshield with only a $100 dollar deductible. This kind of claim should not raise your rates. It will be hard to get the glass alone for that. Call a windshield company, and they will find out if you're covered.

Since the World did not end this week I just may get back to working on my Jeep again.

It sure has been fun to just hop in it when ever I want for a little romp around the field and over some humpy obstacles. I have not been able to do so since loosing the end of the steering shaft. I have looked several times for it now. I bet I find it in the spring with the mower!

I got to get on with fixing it. I need my little half hour mud romp fix, kind of like a Uly ride without going anywhere. I probably posted this picture before, but now that I use it for a screen saver I realize just how cool it looks. I gotta do this balancing thing again with my fancy aluminum wheels on it, this time in the mud.

I had one of the best Christmas's in a long time. I stayed at home with the pups and worked on the Jeep a little.
I bought some cheap driving lights and wired one of them into the back up lights.

Nice. Been looking at the Patriots lately, as well as the Compass. Be nice to have a little 4x4 that gets GOOD mileage, compared to my pair of 14mpg 4.0's (92 YJ, 92 XJ). Keep us informed of how it behaves - capability, comfort, utility, mileage.

we bought this after taking a compass for an overnighter. it was the rescue green color that i loved but the wife hated. could have had that one for $2k cheaper than the patriot and it had the actual trail rated off road pkg on it. but she loves white and the wheels do it for me!

the mileage is 'rated' at 26 mpg highway. not bad for awd and locking transfer case. the off road pkg gets you a low range, one inch lift, tow hooks & a steeper gear ratio. reports i've seen are almost 1k rpm more at 65 mph for 2 mpg less so i figured we didn't need that anyhoo.

from what i've done on these recent snow covered roads the awd kicks butt! and comfort wise, it's got that sweet spot my elbow likes to sit when i'm driving so i'm good! as far as capability goes...well, it's no xj for sure. at the dealer we see the patriot/compass/caliber in constantly for lower ball joints & loose tie-rod ends (the weak link fo sho!) i'll be doing mine right before the warranty goes out. and powertrain is good for 5-yrs/100,000 so i'm good there.

anyone wants a great deal on a rescue green off road pkg compass let me know! we've had it on the lot for about a year. and i think it looks sweet!

I just put tow hooks and the OE class III hitch on the '12 Liberty I just got... It's been pretty amazing the bad weather so far.

I'm looking at ditching the running boards...

Thanks for the info, Shawn. I don't do hardcore stuff, just looking for something to get me out before the plows mobilize if needed. My prob is, I don't like the CVT...and manuals are tough to find. (shrug)

My other thought is keep piling miles on the XJ in the bad weather, and pick up a Dart RT or SRT when/if they come out. I'm just getting a hankering for ONE new vehicle. My newest cage is my '01 Ram 2500 diesel. 215k miles, just drove it from MD to FL and back for Christmas...and got 22mpg total out of it. But it's too damned big to drive to work every day : ( And, I need to chase down a couple of fluid leaks now : ( : ( But...it's paid for!

It's not a case of not trusting a CVT...I just don't *like* 'em.

We'll see what the SRT Dart looks like. Hopefully not quite as tuner-car as a couple of the show cars...I prefer a more subtle look. But I like the idea of another turbocar. Hell, once I get the computer programming sorted out, I might be happy driving my 87 Shelby CSX again...but it would be nice to have an economical 4x4 if needed...

Not sure where you heard this but they are still in business and going strong. They are now making their own wheels, or at least have their brand on a set. I recently got a set of 44" blemish tires for my truck.

I did a little more Internet research on Interco. It seems that one of the companies that they subbed the "Super Swampers" to went out of business. That has made the Super Swampers unavailable for some time, unless old stock was available. Interco themselves are still going strong, they are working on getting their molds set up with someone else to start producing Super Swampers again.

The guy who bought the new set of Swampers that I had for my jeep, drove nearly four hours one way to get them because suppliers were out of them, and placed him on a back order list with no time frame for availability. That back order list was already a year old.

Ok. I was doing lots of research after my post and couldn't find any new info. I wondering what was going on. I remember that the company that actually made their tires, Denman, went out of business and they were about to start producing the tires in china but the new imported tire tariff made it too expensive. So they have been bringing molds back to the states.
