I don't know who classifies movies for IMDb.com but they seem to agree with me that John Carter is Fantasy, not SciFi.

The books were definitely fantasy. No explanation was given for how Carter fell asleep in a cave on Earth, and woke up on Mars. Carter was also described as essentially "immortal" with no memory of a childhood at all.

The movie makers introduced the alien "super race" as a means of explaining how Carter was able to get to Mars and back. I found that more satisfying than the non-explanation in the books, actually.

I also think I would've preferred seeing Deja Thoris portrayed exactly the way she was in the books (ie: NAKED).

I pick the categories, I think I will change it to Romance as I'm sure there is a love plot in it, and horror because someone is bound to die.

Yea, it was pretty risque for 1912. Still, as clothed as she was, Lynn Collins is pretty hot.

You're complaining about the way SHE looks?

Apparently the red tattoos were their "interpretation" of Burroughs' red Barsoomians.

Nah, not complaining, but this is what I originally read. I thought it was Boris, apparently not. These were commissioned in 1979, Michael Whelan was the artist.

There's a few more, I think there was 11 or 12 books total.

Very cool. I'm sure Lynn Collins could have TOTALLY pulled that look off.

The book that started this thread ("John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood") makes the point that the director, Andrew Stanton (also director of "Wall-E" and "Finding Nemo") was first exposed to John Carter in a Marvel (?) comics series in the 70's. When Stanton was older he read the novels, but his first impressions of the story were the artwork from the Marvel comics, and that was reflected in the movie.

I like the Marvel Comic movies ( with the exception of the Eric Bana Hulk ) and enjoyed "300" a movie based on a graphic novel based on a 1955 movie based on a 450bc historian. Roman. Preserving a Greek propaganda tale. ( the event DID take place, the Spartans DID die. The plaque left behind is classic. )

Now "300" is 5 point removed from history. The Spartans wore the best armor of the day into combat, 1/4 inch thick Bronze. Not bare chested with leather posing pouches. There were no mutants, no one rode a Rhino, and Xerxes wasn't 7 feet tall, bald with heavy Piercings. ( all that is from the comic book ) The Elephant part though, that's authentic. Think about it, your people average 5'6". You are attacked by a critter larger than your house, with a house on top of it full of warriors shooting arrows and spears at you. By the time the tale gets home, what you saw in the movie ( double size mammoths ) is what the story is.

John Carter Of Mars.

It didn't suck. I would have preferred Dejah Thoris as presented in the books, "She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure."

But. Disney. Darn. And yeah, Lynn Collins sure could have done that justice.

It makes sense that "John Carter" is loosely based on the comic. I didn't know that, and spent the whole time trying to NOT remember the books. ( pretty easy, to my surprise, since I last read them back in Jr High. ) I couldn't remember how Carter got to Mars, exactly, but on reflection, realized that when Carter was introduced, he had some serious PTSD. As a kid nekkid red ladies was more important than the psychological profile of a deeply troubled veteran.

I'll have to read the book this thread references. thanks.

Watched it on t'internet last night, & now wish I'd not missed it at the cinema.

I'm starting to wonder about having a projection room in my next house so I can just watch fillums on a big screen all day when I'm not in my workshop.

If I combine it with a fitness room I can probably squeeze the idea past "she who must be obeyed".

When I was in my early teens, I absolutely loved the John Carter novels; and I haven't seen the movie because, like all books I really enjoyed, I felt Hollywood would butcher it.(like Starship Troopers did to the original Heinlein novel)
Maybe I'll check the movie out.
I do have one question, though. If John Carter rides for a long distance, does he get a sore thoat?

Crusty- I think you'll like it. This movie is FAR closer to the Burroughs' story than the Starship Troopers movie was to Heinlein.

BTW- those of you that have read the books, I was very interested to read that prior to writing these books, Burroughs was pretty much a failed businessman down to his last few dollars. He spent a lot of time reading pulp magazines like Argosy that contained mostly poorly written adventure stories. Eventually he thought "I know I can write a story at least as good as these, and probably a lot better", and he sat down and wrote "A Princess of Mars". He wound up selling the story to a sister publication of Argosy for $400, which was the equivalent of 6 months salary. That started his writing career which led to more John Carter stories and of course Tarzan Up until the 1950's he was the most successful writer of the 20th century.

Pretty good story for a FIRST effort.

I was glad that the movie scaled down the height of the green martians. As a kid, I didn't think about the comparative height between Carter and Tars Tarkas...
Many of ERB's characters had a bit of immortality worked into them...and when you think of his ability to imagine entire civilizations and worlds without the influence of today's science...pretty cool!

Hugh- thanks for saying.

Writing, as a profession or an art, is mostly lost to us in 2013.

Of course I generalize a bit- pardon the pun.

I watched the Teen Tournament today on Jeopardy- that episode in particular, and that ONE game show, both give me hope for the future.
There was an 8th grade girl tonite who could've beaten a senior.

AFAIK, I still do 50/50, sometimes 2/3 (mebbe), getting those answers right.

Sorry about the 'jack, but I relish chances to write, if for nothing more than good folks here on BW, for no better subject than trolls or ponies.

Heck, youn's are gonna send me up for a day at McKay's. Then for dinner if my honey will have me- flip a coin for the car keys, I guess.

Someday I should post a bibliography of books/junk I have, just before I defenestrate...

Glad to pass along the info. The author posted on the "Back to Barsoom" Facebook page that they had over 10k downloads yesterday.

Even if you don't care anything about John Carter, it's still a very interesting "behind the scenes" look at how Hollywood does, or at least should promote a movie.

Reading the book on Kindle these past few days. Fascinating insight into Disney's utter incompetence in handling this property. : (
