Trying to find info and opinions on what kind of bike (motorcycle) I can get my 4 year old son. He really loves my bike and loves to be taken for short rides. He even knows how to start my Buell. So I'm looking for something I can get to teach him how to ride
the kaw kdx 50 has served my family very well. both my son & daughter learned on it. nice thing is it has spacers & another shock location so it can grow a little as your kids do. heck my son even raced it in ama motorcross for awhile! if you lived closer i'd sell it to you for cheap
My 1986 Z-50 pitbike has taught more kids to ride than you can count. It has never had the engine apart. Still cranks first kick. It HAS had regular high quality maintenance, including regular oil changes and valve adjustments.
If you get a new one, make sure it has the "long" slide in it to restrict throttle opening. Later install the short slide for max power.
If your kid really digs motorcycles just be prepared to change bikes as he grows. The grandson started on an XR70 when he was 7. Had an RM80 for a year. Then a CR80 big wheel, a KX125, a YZ250 and finally a KX450F all by the time he was 14.
Little guy too. He had to stop the bike next to a rock in order to get a foot down, pull up next to you to use your foot peg or jump off just before coming to a stop to keep from falling over. Once rolling though, nobody could keep up with him. BTW, nothing smells better than a CR80 burning Blendzall castor oil blend.
XR 50 is hard to beat. Before the XR 50, the razor electric dirt bikes (the smaller blue ones) will get the kid rocking two wheels about the time he can start walking, and is a great cheap trainer. It's only good for flat ground though. Look for cheap ones on craigslist with shot batteries and just replace them (available online).
I like the XR's as well bought a 2002 XR80R for the kids $450.00. have a 8-9 and 12 yr old the 8 yr old was riding a trx50 (4 wheeler) at 18 months. They still like the 4 weelers better. I think you will get more use from an 80 he won't out grow it as fast and you will be able to have fun on it as well, I don't seee me selling mine.
The electric razor is also good for going under the radar if you have debbie downer neighbors. If you are tooling around the cul-de-sac on a gas mini bike, it's just a matter of time before somebody complains.
The silent little e-bikes seem tolerated much better. But again, they won't climb hills.
I think the old Razors were MUCH better than the newer ones (proportional throttle, bigger battery).
