So after twenty four years of mostly avoiding snow and its associated sports my ski instructor friend has convinced me to strap on skis and give it a go. Equipment has evolved light years since I last skied in icy Minnesota and Wisconsin. I am shopping for a new helmet and was wondering if there is anything specific to look for besides comfort and fit. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. B.

I'd recommend having a nice thin helmet liner to wear when trying on the helmets. I wear the liner most of the time, removing it when the weather's warm. Bring the sunglasses and goggles you're going to use and try the combos. A helmet I loved needed to be exchanged when I tried it out with the glasses. You'll never go back to a hat after just one cold day in a helmet. Much like bike helmets... go for one that fits. If it's comfortable, you're much more likely to wear it ALL the time.

After a major concusion on the mountain Sonny Bono died on, I decided to start wearing a helmet years ago.

You are right, the proper ski equipment will make you feel 20 years younger. It will also allow you to push yourself harder than you thought, maybe beyond abilities. I am amazed at how easy it is to turn shaped skis!

A good helmet should focus around comfort as many provide similar amounts of safety.

X2 on bringing your goggles and sunglasses. Keep in mind, the goggles you may have worn without a helmet may not work with a helmet. Be prepared to replace.

Check to see if you goggle strap will go over the helmet, or if the helmet will allow you to wear the strap under the helmet. It's too very different styles.

A small visor on the front can be helpful and stylish, but be sure it is not loose for noise sake. They can rattle and drive you nuts.

Enjoy the snow!

Thanks for the advice. We visited a couple snow sports shops here in northern Colorado and I settled on a Multi seasonal hi viz green helmet. It has good vents and a carrying handle that my friend thought was good. The salesperson said it could be used on a bicycle as well and since there are hills here (gasp) I may use it if I break out the skateboard! It is very comfortable and fits with my wrap around motorcycling sunglasses. Goggles may be next but I need to get reacquainted with my contacts and make sure this skiing thing is not just a passing phase. I do have a balaclava and will be using my buell neck Gator. Its funny that so many pieces of my cold weather m c gear such as my performance base layer stuff is so similar to the high end ski stuff my friend uses. Being a frugal bueller I appreciate the dual purpose nature of it! I am excited to hit the slopes and will try to post pics.. Thanks. B.

I just got a couple more pairs of snowblades (skiboards) for the family to use, we love them.

Think rollerblades for the snow.

Not as high a top speed race like a long GS speed, and they don't work well in really deep powder, but they can carve turn after turn and parallel ski great, and fit in a dufflebag in the trunk sideways.

We love them. Got two sets of a new old model for $120.

SkiBoards kick ass! I an on my third set. K2 Fatty's carve the beefiest turns. You can literally put your knuckles down in the corners they bite so hard.

They are a fun half day board for the groomers. They are fun to ride switch as well since most are made with twin-tips.

Have fun!

Well the good news is my first day back on the slopes was a ton of fun and I did not break anything when I fell twice. The bad news is I am hearing from muscles I have not heard from in years. I expected as much and know I need to work my leg muscles prior to strapping on the skis again.

Can one of you please posts pics of the skiboards? They sound groovy and This is all new stuff to me. I'm going to check out the pictures I took today and will try to post up soon. Thx. B.

And I agree about the side bite biff, I have drug a knuckle as well, it was a huge surprise to me. I expected less edge grip, not more, but these things bite like nobodies business.

The other fun thing is to have about 24" of good snow along the sides of an icy slope, and be able to slalom along it just fine.

Mine look just like these. They are only 88cm, but the sidecut is pretty amazing.

I started riding skiboards/skiblades back when the Kneissel Bigfoot was released. I owned a pair before my local resort started renting them.

Then I moved on to the K2 Fatty's when I trashed the bigfoot boards. They were all legal with Ptex bases and metal edges. They were true skis.

The best way to describe them was roller blading downhill. Fun to jump, but tough to land.
