Froggy I'm in complete agreement on the cover/sail opinion. All the bikes I see knocked over in apartment complexes have covers. I learned when working for Legendary Auto that covers just scratch the paint and increase rust. I'm not even sure that any but the most expensive reduce UV that can harm paint and interiors.

I would only use a car or bike cover indoors where the vehicle is protected from rain and wind. In that circumstance, they can protect against dust, bird droppings, etc.

I'm also into rodent poison on floor next to stored stuff, since the mice ate my VW's wiring harness while it sat 2 WEEKS. If you have pets or children, make sure the rodent poison is in covered, latched, "kid & pet safe" boxes. By the time kids figure out how to open them, they should be smart enough not to eat the rat poison. If not... I feel sorry for you.

Injuring yourself working on a machine in cold weather that you don't use in cold weather is silly.

Next time, get dressed, shovel some snow or have a snowball fight or go sledding... and then you will be all "pumped up" and ready to take on the bike repair.

Shouldn't frogs be hibernating now anyway?

OK, maybe it's not a 6 minute job.

But... I can say that I've changed my wheel bearings and brake pads in 30 minutes.

Is there something you're not telling us? Perhaps some other mechanical failing of the vehicle to which we had previously not been made aware?

I'm telling you.... he lost the axle.
That's the real reason.

Good news everyone, I'm done!

Funny thing is, that did help. I had to go out and shovel (ended up using doing about half the driveway with my electric snow blower, then I went to work on the wheel. I wore my riding suit so I was mostly warm, and every time I sat down my ass got stuck to the pavement. Either way, about an hour later I got it finished. Hopefully the roads will be clear enough tomorrow to take it for a spin.

Even if I did lose the axle, I have spares. I seriously have enough spare parts that I'm only one rear spring away from building a complete running XB.

Or an upside down bucket. Technology confuses some people.

It's painful looking at a motorcycle covered with snow.
That poor bike...

(I feel about motorcycles the way PETA nut cases feel about animals)

Harbor freight had a hydraulic stool for $20 with coupon (back of cycle world I think). So I can finally retire one of my milk crates. : )

it really is like a 10 minute job. 2 bolts on the caliper, pinch bolt, and axle...

for years, i had an 84 s-10 with a 383 stroker motor and a 350th transmission in it. that motor would torque that truck hard enough it would snap the bell housing off the trans every so often.

i literally changed that transmission laying on the ground in a snow bank, in an alley behind my apartment, after dark, with no flashlight half the time. in about half an hour, and i had to use a 2ft extension with a swivel to remove and install the bolts on the trans housing...

put on the warmest stuff you have, and just go out and do it. doing it sucks, but it sucks less then stretching that sucky stuff out for days and agonizing over it.

plus your right next to your house. work on it until your "to cold" then warm your hands, then go back to work.

but of course i grew up doing construction and concrete work outside year round also... hit your thumb full swing with a hammer when its below zero. that sucks.
