I just saw Will Holbrook, who was a member of the 3% Braging Rights Club on Fox 5 news making a prosthetic leg for a kid. They had a nice segment on Will fitting the leg, modifying it,refitting, then watching the kid walk on it. It's the first time I've seen Will in several years. |

Very interesting to me. My dad was an amputee back in the late 50's. Prosthetics back then were quite crude. He put his skills to work to build himself something more state of the art. There were tool and die jigs, fiberglass, and silicone rubber that eventually came together, along with several patents to create what was back in the 60's, state of the art artificial legs. Our basement had many various legs laying around from the years of experimentation and development. I have memories of my dad working with other amputees to get them walking again. Seeing that video, there were many things that looked familiar. As mentioned in the video, fit and alignment mean everything. Cool stuff! |

Yeah, they work for the same company. Will is in Druid Hills, and Charlie is in Monroe. They do a lot of stuff, I just hope the new Medical Device Tax doesn't hurt them too much. They're getting close to expanding the part that Charlie works for. |

We are fighting the good fight I promise. Great story, we build things like this every day and I get to go home KNOWING I made a positive change in MANY peoples lives EVERY DAY. I am very proud to be a part of this team, and our new fabrication center I designed is coming along nicely. |

New21r, I'm just curious how similar you do things to what my dad came up with back in the day. He basically built a temporary, adjustable set up to connect the artificial foot and cup for the stump so the length and angles could be adjusted and tested. When it was all working well he had a jig that would hold the cup and foot in position while an artificial leg was built between them with fiberglass. I'm just curious if any of the ideas he worked out are still in use, or have they been completely surpassed. |

Sifo, very similar, there is a test socket made with adjustable componets in some cases, in others we use a "stomper" and just epoxy a male connector to the socket. You get everything lined up, install in the jig and build your final lamination around this. |
