I had an idea for what could be a better "No turn on red" indicator. Instead of a sign that may be hidden or blocked by trees or vehicles or not placed correctly... how about replacing the Red Light Lense with one that has a thin black X in it? This way no one has to pull up to an intersection and wonder if there is a sign they can't see. I think this would be great idea and could easily tell the difference between a normal and an X'd red light.

I like the idea, I'm just not sure how effective it would be, maybe use a red right pointing arrow that turns green with the regular light instead? Less confusing, more visible? I've seen that done in some more complex intersections with multiple right turn only lanes.

I think the right turn on red has become 'Why stop and why yield'. I have even seen cars pull out right in front of police and nothing happens.

Cars don't even look half the time, they just pull up and go. If it wasn't for defensive driving there would be a lot more accidents. Even the 'No Right Turn On Red' signs are ignored and if you adhere to one, cars behind will honk at you for not going.

The key to any traffic signalization or signage is consistency (as in EVERYWHERE). See if you can get AASHTO to buy off, and you're good to go.

You can get a ticket for NOT turning on red when it is allowed and it is clear to do so. I believe it is called impeding traffic flow. (NJ) But I guess it would be at officers discretion.

Froggy,. that light is an addition light correct? With Red/YelGrn Arrow for right turns?? That is more confusing...

Inthe existing lights, just replace the red lenses with the X one and add brighter bulbs only where right turn is not allowed.

It's "Right turn on red.. AFTER STOP" alot of folks forget the after stop part and sail right through.

You mean like this one:

Or this one:

or this one:

They're all over the place, I see them all the time. I think they should be in more places, light standards are much more effective than signs... and I think that was your point.

light standards are much more effective than signs

Plus illegals and foreigners could understand them too.

I've never understood this idea of turning right on a red light, over here a red light means STOP, sometimes you'll find an orange right turn arrow that lights up, but as it's orange you go at your own risk.

In certain cases you can turn left on a red but only if turning off a one way, onto a one way. Turning right on red, if nothing is coming, just keeps traffic flowing. You aren't crossing traffic turning right.
