So, maybe it's just a Maryland thing...but lately I've seen an increasing number of "drivers" who are sticking their GPS mounts to the windshield DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THEMSELVES.

As if the map display is some sort of heads-up display they can drive by.

I have no idea how they can see past the damn things. There has got to be some sort of state/DOT law prohibiting line-of-sight placement...hell, we can't even have a CRACK in the windshield on the drivers side, or we get pulled and get a "fix-it" ticket!

When are we allowed to just start shooting? Speed up the Darwinian natural de-selection process before these idiots get a chance to take someone with them?

When I see something like that,I check behind me for vehicles and if it's clear,I push in the clutch and SQUEAL the rear tires with the parking brake. A tire squeal really wakes them up and they don't really know where it came from.Love doing it to texters.....

It's not just Maryland. More & more cagers are doing the same thing in Florida. If I come across one I let them get well ahead of me just so i don't have to deal with their inattentiveness.
Lord knows why they need a HUD. It's a car, not a jet fighter.

Don't worry, soon all these GPS device will be outlawed just like talking on your phone, only built in handsfree turn by turn navigation will be allowed.

They must be driving rentals then. All the plates say Florida.

I do (ish)...but I drive my own truck. My folks are in St Augustine.

GPS mounted securely BELOW the stereo on my dash. (Not that a quest II blocks a lot of anything...lol)

We started using Waze. It just works through your phone. It's free and seems to work great with good voice prompts and nothing to distract you.
It won't let you make any changes while on the move. No pimp bling factor, but nothing in front of you.

People will just do dumb stuff no matter what though. You can't ban stupidity.
I've seen a guy actually reading a book on the highway. I'm not talking about glancing at a newspaper while stopped in gridlock either. I mean the guy was reading doing 60ish.

I have my phone/gpos mounted just below my rear view mirror. I like having it accessible easily but completely hate the fact that it obscures some of my view. I wish there was another way. Last thing most drivers need is another blind spot. But looking away can be hazardous too. I am also catching myself NOT pulling over to access functions on it. Even clicking thru to google navigation to get to the mic to speak the destination is a pita and dangerous to do while driving.

I havent seen anyone with gps directly in front of them yet here in mid jersey.

If you have to stick it to the glass, I've put the cradle in my Cherokee in the very bottom left corner of the window, practically sitting on the dashboard. That's the highest-mounted one I have and doesn't create a blind spot at all. My diesel, it's mounted below the radio; my Wrangler, next to the speedo. Any of them...it talks, so I rarely look at it anyway.

The new Dart, from what I've read, has a programmable CRT instrument cluster that you can shuffle around (presumably only while in "park"). That, honestly, doesn't bother me much. We've always had gauges in our cars; they trained us (at least, back when I was learning to drive) to do the "eye scan" every few seconds - windshield, rear view mirror, side mirror, gauges, other side mirror, windshield. The problem I have is putting a big freakin' TELEVISION right smack in the middle of the windshield.

What gets me is the thought process that goes on here.

"My GPS is MORE IMPORTANT than my actual *driving requirements*, and it's MORE IMPORTANT than any of the other PEOPLE around me".

Part of the reason I enjoy riding. I couldn't answer my phone if I needed to. Text or email? Fuggedaboutit. GPS? Yep, it's on the handlebar...but it's a Quest II and even sitting on the sofa at home, it's a pain in the ass to program. Forget doing it on the fly, so I don't even try.

Maryland *supposedly* has a no-texting law. And, a no-handheld law. But, I don't see either being enforced.

...and the dumb get dumber...while the innocent are put at risk...

Just goes to show - neither common sense, nor common courtesy, are common anymore. Sigh.

Hey Joe, et al... I got my new Aerostitch catalog last week, dammit if I wouldn't spend a FORTUNE on all the stuff they've got this time around... but try this:

http://www.aerostich.com/yellow-cards.html

Plus, they've got a Ben Franklin book I want, BAD!

Also, blank/fake but realistic speeding ticket books!

WOOHOOO!

But, to the OP, I really like the idea of the "yellow card", even if it's a little too polite...

Rat,

I like the idea of it being built in and in that location. Cool factor to the max.

Being already trained to scan that patch and all. It just makes sense.

Rat, Just wait until you see some one with an Ipad mounted on their windshield. Yes a ..... IPAD their blind spot could hide a car.

As someone who drives with a 10.1" Android tablet mounted to my windshield I can tell you this ain't true. My rear view mirror obscures more of my view than the tablet. if the tablet wasn't there, 3/4 of what I normally would see is hood or interior of the car, with the remaining quarter being an outside view, but like I said the rear view mirror obstructs more. If I really wanted to I can reposition it and make it lower and have 100% of my view unobstructed, but I like it better where it is now.

My favorite GPS idiocy is when I see the same monkeys driving the same route every morning to get to work with the GPS on and in front of them.
How many people need directions every time they go to work?

When your GPS automatically picks a route for you based on traffic and accidents, and automatically reroutes you away if they occur during the drive, and then warns you of police/construction/other hazards automatically, it can be quite useful for your daily commute.

Well, the guy I saw with the Ipad mounted, had it directly below the rear view mirror. In the middle of the windshield.

I know you can mount stuff to where does doesn't block the drivers view, but some drivers are just not that smart.

I have a mount for my OG Droid and it didn't block any of my view.

Now, if you could hack and swap the camera for night vision, that would be a different critter altogether.

I used to mount my gps on the lower left part of my windshield. It was in front of me and it should have been. that way i could easily glance down at it when i drove if i needed to. Not sure what the issue is?

It's depended on what car I'm in. The Chevy Cobalt I had had an odd windshield, and the best place for the GPS was in the upper left corner. The dash was high and rake was such that if I tried to put it low it would block a lot, and I felt a motorcycle could have easily been completely concealed by it up to a closer distance than I was comfortable with.

My girlfriend's car and my current car both have a little more dash area, and the lower left corner works best and blocks virtually nothing of importance looking out.

I've actually used mine less and less in the car, recently. I prefer to use my phone at this point, with turn by turn directions and talks via bluetooth over the stereo. I'd love to come up with a way to mount it somewhere in the car (I also use it for my music), but I'm having a hard time finding a mount that's any good and doesn't block a ton of the view.

I usually will place it on the lower left corner of the windshield or in the center and the base where the hood is the only thing I am blocking behind it. Also hate the IDIOTS with the Handicap placards hanging from the mirror. Had a close call with a lil ol' lady in a Town Car. Apparently I have bad luck with old people driving Lincolns, but i won't talk about that now.

I keep mine up by the rear view. In my truck it doesn't block the view of anything much. though I have a small gps and I find it easier to glance at it up there than down by the dash. In my room mates car it does block my view there. also I don't stare at the damn thing like some folks..

Xl1200r... I also run my nav on my phone. I bought some cheap cell phone holsters (plastic kind with a spring loaded pocket clip) and modified them to use all over the place. I cut the swivel plastic pocket clip off and mounted them to a piece of 1/8 x 3/4 aluminum strap. I can gently bend the strap to fit in odd places and behind trim pieces in various equipment (vehicles, etc.) that I am in. I use it in the tractor all the time just to hold the phone where I can reach it easily and use the speaker phone and such. I can take a pic of the one I have mounted on my bike it you would like....
