As far as Keihen and Mikuni, I'm instructing the class!

That is quite a bit more comprehensive than anything I've ever setup. I've done war driving on bike, but never tried any penetration testing. Smart using the raspberry pi to run a HUD system, I'll look into it more, I'm not satisfied with my setup.

I thought it was pretty obvious from the subject line. Froggy himself just confirmed my suspicion.

I am also an ignorant dummy, but I can offer a little help to Mr grumpy and Brumbear:

There's a person who has outfitted his motorcycle with a variety of very clever computer things, and he uses this ability to find computer networks. War driving is the act of physically going out and driving around to bring yourself into the transmission/reception area of networks. This person has gone beyond slouching around in a car full of computers and radios has fitted the gear into a motorcycle. He has also created a way to operate the system and see his information with a heads-up-display, so he has basically made himself like a motorcycle Terminator that can see your wifi.

By the way, the network map can be thrown all to **** when one of the mapped network hotspots happens to be onboard a CRUISE SHIP.

Apparently, Google mapped the hotspot aboard the Celebrity Eclipse while it was in port in Fort Lauderdale. Last summer, no matter where I was in EUROPE, my Android phone INSISTED I was in Fort Lauderdale until I turned off "Google Location Services." For some stupid reason, the architects of Android decided Google Location Services would take precedence over what the GPS was telling it.

OK I've read the wikipedia entry on wardriving.

I now know what it is, but fail to see the point of it.

It seems to be some sort of digital jerking off as far as I can see.

But if it floats your boat & doesn't harm anyone, have at it.

can't ya just go to panera bread and sit in the parking lot if you don't want to pay for wifi?
Besides paying for wifi has got to be cheaper than gas?

"Pen Tester' is short for 'Penetration' tester- this is about network security. The reason to do this is not to get free internet access so you can browse websites- it's to find/identify/exploit weaknesses in systems. Did you ever see a guy stick his finger into a bunch of pay phones to see if there was a coin there? Did you ever see a petty thief try every door handle on a street? Imagine driving around subdivisions with your garage-door-opener, clicking over and over to see if any of the garage doors open. Imagine getting a few bucks from a homeowner when you show him how you opened his door, or perhaps just imagine taking everything in his garage. It's not really a cute, harmless business.

It's a hobby. What you do with it determines whether or not it's illegal. If you're doing it just for grins, nothing illegal about it. I liken it to geo-caching... something to do with new technology to kill time.

These days I don't have a real use for arriving, but 10 years ago McDonald's/malls/cafés/etc. did not have free public WiFi, so when I was on the road I would have to manually hunt down open access points. These days most routers have security on by default so the open ones are not common. Either way I'm usually on a phone data connection so that also has negated my use for war driving.

4G-tethering on Verizon's LTE network is nearly as fast as my home FiOS connection and a lot faster than my Mom's Optimum online cable connection.

No wonder Verizon eliminated the unlimited data plans. My next phone will be a Nexus phone on T-Mobile for that reason. They don't have an LTE network (yet) but they're getting there.

something to do with new technology to kill time.

Wish I had that much time to kill.

So now we've established what it is & why folks do it, do the rest of us ignoramuses need to do anything to defend against it? & if so, what?

Short and sweet - Just make sure your WiFi requires a password to connect too. This means they can't simply just hop on your network and/or start monitoring your activity.

Long version - There are several different types of WiFi protection including WEP, WPA, WPA2. None of them are perfect, but WEP is about as secure as a screen door. WPA and WPA2 address most of WEPs issues, so if your router and devices are capable of it, make sure your network is setup for WPA or WPA2.

It is not something you really have to worry about, as if you live outside a city you will most likely be able to see someone parked out front in the event someone was mooching your WiFi or trying to see your email, but in something like an apartment complex some guy a couple doors down could get your wife's dirty pics without much fuss if your network is open.
