Fast, I have had a Stoeger .40 since they hit the US market. Built with the Beretta tooling in Turkey. I wont give it up. Now if I can just find a .357Sig barrel. This aint an upsized 9 frame for the .40, designed around the .40 from onset. If you have not fired it yet... To me the recoil feels like 9mm. Natural pointer also. This is my primary CCW and rides well in a Yuaqi style holster |

I haven't fired it yet. It does fit the hand very well and it does point naturally. I really like the ambidextrous safety. It breaks down easily too. Can't wait till Saturday to put a few down range and loosen it up a bit. I like the idea of having 11 rounds at the ready if the zombies attack. The mags are a snap to change. And it is a beautiful weapon. Mine has walnut grips. |

Isn't the Cougar the Beretta PX4? |

The PX4 and CX4 use the same concept but are updated polymer framed. The Stoegers are the original Cougar from the mid 90's |

Finally made it to the range today. My initial thoughts: She feeds flawlessly, the action is smooth, and it got smoother as the day went. Recoil is light, considering the caliber and 180 grain ammo I was using. It will take a few more trips to really get a grip on the sighting and/or my admittedly rusty trigger technique. Wish I had taken more ammo this trip. I think I am pulling it low from my grip and trigger technique. It has been a while since I fired a hand gun. I had forgotten how fun a trip to the range can be. It is FAR more popular than it used to be. The Range Master was professional, and all the shooters played carefully. I put 100 rounds down range today, and had a great time. I thought I had enough ammo on hand at home for the Zombie apocalypse..I see now that 450 rounds really don't go that far . |

Fast1075 Glad to hear you had a good range session with your new Cougar 40. So far sounds like you made a good choice. I have a Px4 in 40 that does shoot smoother than my other 40 S&W do. I almost got a Cougar but the Px4 fit my hand better. I sure like the metal frame of the Cougar though. Obviously, you enjoy shooting and as you already know, the cost of ammo sure passes the cost of the weapon quickly. If some one really enjoys shooting, get the weapon you want even if you have save your money a little while longer, worth it in the long run. |

Visited the range yesterday with some friends. Had a chance to shoot a variety of calibers and guns, from .380 in a Ruger LCP to .22LR & .40 S&W in a Glock 22 to .45 ACP & .45 Super (awesome power) in a Glock 21 to 7.62 x 28mm Tokarev in a Yugo Zastava M57, a very nice vintage Soviet block surplus pistol based on the 1911, but with 1,500 to 1,600 FPS capability in its necked-down .30 caliber 90 grain bullet. The .45 Super in the Glock 22 (modified with 30% stouter recoil spring) was my favorite. It was less handgun, more hand-howitzer. |

used to shoot with the black powder crowd along with a few friends. we were shooting pistols there were a few thompsons, my weapon of choice was a Dan Wesson 41 Magnum with a 10 inch barrel. A lot of fun ringing rams at 300m with a pistol. Between that and shooting ipsc I always get frustrated when tv and movies have guys missing at 50 yards because they are "out of range". I've always said You can run, you'll just die tired if I've got a gun in hand and malice on my mind. |

I had a Beretta Mini-Cougar (40) for a few years until I got a Glock (thought I didn't need or want more than one hand gun). It was a great gun and my experience echoes your impression, smooth, very natural point of aim and comfortable recoil. The gun was far more accurate than I was, as long as my technique was good it shot exactly where I wanted the bullets to go. Mine was a DAO and had a forever long trigger stroke for each round fired. Good for home defense but I wanted more simplicity for work so got the Glock 23, and later a Glock 19 and 26. I sure do miss that Cougar. |

Not to play the roll of gun nerd, but I think you meant 7.62x25 Blake. It is a really interesting little cartridge. You used to be able to get ammo cheap in 550 round sealed spam cans... you can still get 50 rounds of privi-partizan for $15 or so, so its still cheap. I really like the CZ-52... you used to be able to get them for $150 or so all day long. Nice narrow grip, points naturally. Amazing deal for the gun. It uses a roller locking action, simple and clever. The only problem with them was a firing pin that could easily be broken by dry firing, but you can get replacement ones cheap (both original and improved designs). Definately worth picking one up if you ever come across one at $200 or less. Its a sizzling little round. I shot it when I was with a friend who also had 357 sig (.45 cartridged necked down to .357). Both felt similar, though the CZ felt a little heavier and a LOT cheaper . |

isn't 357 sig based on the 40? I was looking at a conversion barrel for my USP a few years back iirc. |

That makes more sense, I was just eyeballing the casings as we I was trying to pick my .45 shells out. I wonder which is a hotter load.... 357 sig or 7.62x25. Both are shootable, but you can tell that little projectile is ***moving***. |

hotter is relative, more energy? the 357 sig easily has more with it's heavier bullets. which one is faster? probably depends on the particular ammo in question. |

Go by energy: 7.62 x 25 has 560 ft-lb. (85 gr.@1720 fps) .357 Sig has 614 ft.-lb. (115 gr.@1550 fps) I'm sure they both hurt... |

Energy is the right measure. Very interesting, cool! Just for reference: 7.62 x 25 has 560 ft-lb. (85 gr.@1720 fps) .357 Sig has 614 ft.-lb. (115 gr.@1550 fps) 9mm FMJ has 399 ft.-lb. (115 gr.@1250 fps) .45 acp has 356 ft.-lb. (230 gr.@835 fps) I would never have dreamed the Tokarev was that much hotter than the .45. Talk about over penetration... geesh! |

50BMG has 14,895 ft.-lb. (800gr@2,895ft/s) Well... They DO come in a handgun but I've never met anyone dumb enough to pull the trigger. Well OK, I'm sure I've "met" people dumb enough ... |

I too am surprised, never checked the ballistics on the 7.62 X 25 May have to take another look at the CZ52. Got to get some more mileage out of my C+R license. (Message edited by Ninefortheroad on November 19, 2012) |

We had an ex armorer here from one of the eastern block countries on BadWeb at one point. He was talking about the CZ52. He said it was a great service gun and that while the firing pin was a weak point, it was actually very rare to have one fail. Aim Surplus was blowing the CZ52 out for $129 for a while. I should have bought two. 1200 rounds of ammo was $125 or something also (I think). Should have bought two of those as well. |

Thanks Bill, 25mm is the correct cartridge length. The M57 holds one more in the magazine compared to other 7.62 x25mm Tokarev variants. Penetration is most dependent upon bullet design. Even a properly designed hollow point will over-penetrate if velocity isn't sufficient. The 1720 FPS for the Tokarev seems optimistic and the 835 FPS for the .45 ACP seems terribly pessimistic. The .45 Super with a 230 grain bullet at 1200 FPS is one mean hand cannon, 735 FT*LBs and a massive impact. Both were really fun to shoot. |

.454 CASULL 7 1/2" bbl has 1759 ft lbs (300 gr. @ 1625 fps) I like .22LR at less than 200 ft lbs |
