Obama got a huge turnout in 2008 from young adults (18-25). This age group typically has a horrible turnout. I came to the US in 1975 and turned 18 in 1981. I was not a US citizen then so was not eligible to vote. My first vote was for Reagan's second term while I was active duty USAF.
Anyway...In retrospect, if I was eligible to vote when I was 18 and if I have to be intellectually honest about it, that vote would have been out of political ignorance. What the hell does an 18 yr old know about society, politics, and history to make a reasonably informed decision to cast his faith in a figure he does not know? I asked this question despite the fact that we fled communism and that I had to be a bit more matured, including politically, than my fellow highskulers.
Sometimes I wonder if we should adapt the old requirements of being a 'landowner' and literate in order to vote for today's time. But then I am pulled to the other side where I realize that being wealthy (landowner) or literate in no way inhibit my intelligence and political self awareness. I remember watching the movie 'Revolution' where Al Pacino in character signed his name with an 'X' because he was illiterate and yet the character was fully aware of what was going on with the country he was living in.
As time passed and I got older and more politically aware, I found one thing have not changed between the young people during my teenage years and the young people of my time today: That they could only speak about politics and political issues via sloganeerings, rarely with any intellectual deliberations.
I can only ask: If it is not possible to impose the 'landowner' requirement upon you 18 yrs old in order for you to exercise this political privilege, then can I at least ask if you have a job, even a minimum wage one, so that you understand some responsibilities beyond your parents' house, before you make a decision that will affect my life?
I have never understood 'idolatry'. Not talking about the concept of 'idolatry' but about the willingness of it. I do not want to support someone because he is 'cool' because being 'cool' is subjective while having a boring job, or successful at a venture be it a fighter pilot or an inventor or a businessman, are objective and quantifiable.
I will admit that despite the years, I am still ambivalent about the wisdom of allowing anyone so young and so inexperience in life to cast into the body politic a decision that will affect my life for X years, perhaps negatively for both of us.
Mitt was the first choice on my ballot, Big O was 2Nd to last (about 10 on the ticket... really??) I wish I would have taken the time to see who else was running but the line was long and time was short.
lots of peeps at my little rural church polling location
Thanks for sharing your views around here. It's great to hear this from someone with a different perspective than many of us have. It's easy to become complacent when you have never seen how bad it can be under a different system of government.
I agree that the typical 18 year old has little ability to vote well. They just haven't developed the wisdom that comes later in life. Yet they are called upon to do amazing things in our country from time to time. Thanks for your service BTW! They are adults and do deserve the right to vote. With maturity, many will gain the wisdom to vote well. The good news is that many who are young and liberal just don't bother to vote. Four years ago, BO got them motivated to go to the voting booth by promising them free stuff. That is something that they do understand. Hopefully they will quickly come to the realization that "free stuff" from the government is paid for by them.
I'm in Pickaway and I would say its a pretty red county. My brother is in Franklin and voted this morning. He said there was over 200 people in line, way more than usual. He is in the Muirfield/Dublin area. Heavy Republican part of the county. Turn out is key
Not only does Washington (the west side of the state) lean entirely too liberal for my liking.... we became a sanctuary state in the last four years too. So y'all come on up - our state has decided to grant immunity to any illegal .... and the buses from California have been arriving weekly.
Ooops, I mean 'undocumented'.... because once you have a drivers license - you are now 'Documented' and hello State benefits - medical, housing, and of course tuition
I wonder what XXXX [ barry ] will say in his concession speech tonight? How will it differ from what John McCain said four years ago? I fixed it for you, Oh barry well
By the way, Obama had a HUGE lead in Early voting in 2008. By a margin of 58% to 40%. Apparently this time around his margin is something like 52% to 48%. If true, that is BAD news for Obama.
Also, those results are only party affiliation and not actual vote. I personally know of a few registered democrats that are voting for Romney in Florida.
I think what you meant to say was that he leads AGAIN. As in Romney leads AGAIN. 163 to 158.
No real surprises so far. It will be close in several key states. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to find that we still don't have a clear winner in the AM.
