I just hosed it out with some gun scrubber, then CLP. There was a gitty substance, like sand, in the crap that came out. I'll let it soak in the CLP for a few hours and then wipe it down for reassembly and see what happens tommorrow.

The Russian Version of Cosmoline makes Cosmoline seem like motor oil.

I bought my Brother in law a Mosin for Christmas a few years back. A box with a big glob of Russian cosmoline with a rifle inside. ( not really that bad... you could tell there was a rifle there ) I found mineral spirits to be the best in the clean up process. ( I meant HIM to do the work... but months later he asked... fairly nicely. The upside is when I did the work... the gun works. )

Expect any stock preserved by Russian "cosmoline" to bleed oil forever. I wrapped the wood bit in a towel and left them in a Hot Van in the summer for a few weeks then wiped everything down with mineral spirits & paper towels. ( and a pile of rags, a box of "cleaning products" that did NOTHING useful, and repeated searches of the intraweb to get tips. )

Covering a "preserved" Russian stock with anything not restricted to NASA makes no difference, it will bleed oil. Right through other non-sealing finishes, and will bubble, then leak, from modern polymer or "waterproof" finishes.

You CAN sand the wood parts to "bare wood" and apply a decent aftermarket gun oil for finish.... but you'll save yourself a lot of work and frustration, get a better finish, and IMHO look better, just by cleaning the stock with spirits, repeatedly, then keeping the gun in a "sock" to protect the universe from the Russian Revenge.

Don't wear expensive dress shirts when firing a Mosin. The stock will bleed on it. ( and if it's the Carbine, YOU may bleed on it. )

Both Bro-in-laws have Nagants, one each of the M91/30 , M44.

Both are fairly accurate, and the Carbine has a very nice trigger, for a 19th century design. Both are accurate, and as a bit of a novelty, the Carbine is fired with bayonet extended. ( folding version ) Actually makes it hang better in offhand shooting.

Kick & Boom, however are night and day.

The rifle is a classic Battle Rifle, and the 30-06 class 7.62 x 54R certainly pushes harder than a Winchester 30-30.

The Carbine slams you with the recoil, and blasts a ball of flame you can see in broad daylight. A large ball.

Pure opinion here, and Each of us experiences recoil differently. I think the Nagant Rifle kicks less than a 30-06 Springfield, while the Carbine kicks more. Faster, sharper. ( ear plug and headset loud, did I mention that? )

My AK is a 7.62x54R

It's a pussy cat to shoot. Even the wife likes it.

As fun and capable as it is, I'm very tempted to go with this:

PSL? Vepr?

Just about the only weapon I can see legitimate reasons for full auto is the FN PS90.

The "legitimate" reasons to have a full auto weapon include: Defending a position against charges by the Enemy, cutting small trees down at a distance, ( a rare, but challenging task ) and having fun.

Others may point out that target shooting, demolishing structures, and scaring Hoplaphobes are other "legitimate" reasons, and I won't argue.

However, in the United States, our laws require a permit to own and operate full auto firearms. ( machine guns, assault rifles, submachineguns ) Many states, Including NY forbid full auto firearms except for military and Police. So. Unless I move, I am not allowed to buy one. Further idiot laws signed By GHW Bush have made full auto weapons even moe expensive by forbidding importation of new or surplus ones or licencing of "new" ones for civilian sale. Be nice to get rid of that stupidity.

The FN PS90 is a semi auto only rifle length barrel civilian version of the selective fire PDW FN P90, of "Stargate SG1" fame. Proven effective on Aliens for many seasons.

The P90 is a "PDW" Personal Defense Weapon" that falls, technically, under the "Assault rifle" category, being select fire and using a "reduced power" round. It's PURPOSE, however, is quite different. The P90 was an attempt to get a NATO contract for a small, light, easily portable weapon to arms cooks, clerks, truck drivers, artillerymen and others who's primary job was not to be a "shooter" but might have need to defend themselves.

This need also was addressed in WW2 by the M1 Carbine. A guy or gal driving a truck, or working a mess hall, is encumbered by a large rifle like a Garand, and experience shows that a pistol was not good enough to be an effective defense weapon, unless the troops using it are well trained, and the US military doesn't do that for various reasons. ( inertia, budget, and a logical emphasis on rifles )

So the P90 is a modern M1 Carbine in intent, purpose, and perceived need.

Besides defending Terra on a TV show made in Canada, it's very well suited for home defense and varmint hunting. I consider it's cartridge too wimpy for responsible Deer hunting, ( I feel the same way about the 5.56x45 ) but could do the job if needed.

Looks cool too. I want one. ( the civilian version )

I can usually live just fine without full auto capacity. As a Halo player, I can twitch my finger faster than I can get most rifles back on target, and for me shots that miss don't do what I want them to do, so why make them? ( on targets, pop cans, over-ripe fruit, etc. )

Also there's the financial aspect. Honestly I can't afford to buy the ammo needed to stay proficient with a machine gun, so I'll take my sour grapes and live with them... perhaps make a little whine.

Had an M44 now have the 91/30 agree with you 100%. I thought the bayonet out was a really funny thing. Some people at the range didn't care for it much though.

The AK is much smoother after being hosed out... the weather is going to prevent any range time today. The indoor range only allows you to load one round at a time with rifles...

I don't have a desire for a machine gun, my class III desires involve suppressors...

Full auto is fun if you have a large target...like a car. If you want to spray and pray, just get a garden hose. This is a semi auto only.... fully legal HBM2 50cal BMG. The rounds went thru that 2' diameter tree like it wasn't there and left smouldering holes in the dirt bank behind it. APIT ammo(armer piercing, incendiary tracers)
