Hey all- I'll be running the mower tomorrow for the first time since putting up the new fence... we live literally next to the neighborhood park, and I'm working on ideas to make the fence easier, hopefully pleasant to look at. So far I'm planning on the obvious: Springtime planting of vines and pretty plants to grow up and through the fence, hopefully attracting butterflies and hummers... on about 3 or more terminal posts I'm gonna put up bluebird boxes. What other cool/perennial/inexpensive ideas does anyone have? Chainlink aint real purty to look at, but that's what we have now. I'm not expecting to get much done before Spring, nor do I have the $$$ for anything now anyway... just ideas. If there are some kewl interwebz sites I should know about, have at it! Thanks- and happy leaf raking (to HELL with blowers, tools of Satan...) to all! |

Take your pick here: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=nobama+signs&q pvt=nobama+signs&FORM=IGRE (sorry...I could not resist!) (I don't rake leaves I just cut/mulch into the grass with a mower) |

They make an insert that you run through the pattern on the chainlink to make it "sorta" solid looking. Pretty neat stuff. http://www.yourfencestore.com/slatchoice.htm |

Many years ago I knew a bloke who worked in a sheet metal factory making roofing. He used to keep the small circles & squares that were punched out of certain parts, they were coloured with some sort of plastic iirc. His wife used to hang them in the holes in the chain-link using wire or zip ties, up close it looked like odd bits of stuff hung on a fence, but when you stepped back far enough it made a picture. She did one at the bottom of the garden looked like a beach with sea. I seem to remember she put a few shiny reflective ones in with the blue to give the twinkly effect, horizon was top of the fence. Cool stuff. |

OK Grumps- THAT is a great idea! Bonus points for the "redneck" aspect and the artistic angle... my property is the FIRST on the street outside of the "historic district", where fun stuff like that isn't allowed. Wish there were a way you could find some pics! |

You could combine Grumpy's idea with Xdigitals's idea. |

If it is a City Park fence, best check the ordinances before doing any changes to it. We had a mural here on the guys side of the fence on his property get struck down .... They claimed the 'art' work was an environmental hazard as the paints were not approved by the city - and he would have to pay for reconstruction and disposal ... too many lawyers - it was a nice bit of tribute to spawning salmon. |

I planted sprigs of ivy groundcover here and there. Eventually, I should have a 3' tall wall-of-ivy, nice and nature-like (and should keep the dogs from yapping at the neighbors - a double bonus!) |

Topped with Razor tape they are even better. Chain link will rust in our salt environs Razor tape stays nice and sharp! |

Thanks for the ideas. And yes, PWN, it's a crying shame things went that way. I think I've figured it out. I still welcome more good ideas. All the love to youn's all. |

I hate chain link fences. I would put up a 6ft tall privacy fence on my side of the property line. That way the city has to mow in between the fences by hand. |

Do hops need a fence to grow? Didn't know that if so... Not a bad idea, but I'd have to find space to put together the beermaking rig, plus the jugs and bottles. I just have no room in my little shoebox house. Crack- 'tis the reason for the OP. So far I've got an OK start putting the lipstick on the pig. |

I'm not a big fan of chainlink either, but I splurged and spent a couple bucks more, and got black vinyl-coated. Since my house is set back from the road...the fence just vanishes from sight. Just the way I want it. I'm sure the vinyl will crack eventually, but there will be ivy growing on it by then so I'm not worried |

Yeah, Joe- my guy who installed the stuff said it'd look a lot better if I could paint it black- most of the stuff in the park is black, so it'd match up there. I just wonder what would be the best way to paint a chainlink fence- spray would give a HUGE amount of overspray/waste, so I'm trying to think of a good way to use a roller or something. |

Painting a chain link fence is pretty easy, but it needs two people. Spraying will cause your material costs to escalate in the range of x 50 or so. Get a person on each side with rollers and coordinate the rolling together. You need a pretty heavy nap on the rollers so it will get in everywhere. A roller on just one side at a time tends to get real drippy on the other side. There will of course be brush work around the poles and hardware. Pick a nice neutral color. |

Obama and Romney probably never had a chain link fence but I guarantee Biden did. Bestest cheapest way to paint a chainlink fence is with a roller,... if you have to ask how to use a roller then it is probably best to hire someone. |

the back half of a beer bottle will fit through a fence well.... get to work coordinating a mosaic of brown, clear and green bottles stuffed through the fence. I smell PARTY . |

The fun part would be getting there!... I would refuse any light beers. But with proper placement of the bottles (green/brown/clear) one could still place a message and remove it later ..... |

OK fellas, I guess you can climb back in my treehouse... Thanks Sifo- that was along the lines I was thinking anyway, but that's a very good idea for technique. I appreciate that pun, BTW! |

Jram- very interesting! I wonder what the cost differences would be between the electrostatic and rollers? Obviously the first would be a LOT cleaner. |

Squids, hops will need a rope or fence to climb. A chain link fence would probably do nicely. |
