Many sportbike makers have been slowly moving their exhausts lower and lower each year.
The Yamaha R1 and Honda CBR600RR are still running undertail, even though the R6 and CBR1000 both have low and tucked exhausts.

Even Ducati has bitten the bullet, let go of the iconic undertail exhaust, and switched to a complete under-slung exhaust on the Panigale.
KTM likewise uses an under-slung exhaust on their superbike.
It just makes sense

Recently read a bike review on the new Ducati Panigale (Sport Bike Rider?), and the paragraph header stated: "Take a bow, Erik Buell" as it went into detail of Ducati's new under-slung exhaust system.
Great job Elves!

Sounds like they are making a great bike even better! I hope they have figured out how to put a seat on that thing that you can sit on for a few hours. That would be a huge improvement.

The under slung muffler/exhaust has always been a superior concept. It just took a renegade like Erik Buell to make it cool...

With catalytic converters and increasing sound restrictions, read more exhaust system weight. The lower that weight can be placed in the package the better.

It was just a matter of time until under slung exhaust was accepted.

From a historical standpoint the underslung exhaust has been here since before Erik was born when motorcycles still had pedals and two drive chains. I once owned a 1909 Thor single. It not only had an underslung exhaust but the exhaust was called a kickbox because of the lever on the side of the muffler. A rider needed only to kick the lever to have a full open exhaust. Yep Erik made it cool and made the opening feature operated from the motor instead of the rider but all these things were done well before BAM or EBR. Just sayin'. ; )

Not wanting to get into who did what and when, but I tend to recognize that most design features compromise other things. Certainly a muffler under the engine will take up more space than a simple exhaust pipe. Where does this space come from? Either you have to reduce ground clearance, or raise the crank shaft (and the rest of the engine) higher. There is no free lunch. It's all about how it's packaged together that matters.

I would be very curious to see the details on the new Street Triple. Did the engine get raised? Did it lose ground clearance? Did the handling get improved? I really don't care too much where they put the muffler. I do care about how the entire package works as a whole. I've always wondered about how that big chunk of lead we call a battery could be repackaged to not have it way up high are far aft in the sub frame.

I wonder what the new reduced rake and trail numbers are? Are they becoming more Buell like?

Not all are going that direction. BMW is a side exhaust. Kawasaki's liter bike is side exhaust also Suzuki is said to be redesigning. The GSXR 750 didn't so I doubt the new 1000 will have a under slung exhaust for next year either. The n of coarse Yamaha's R1 in undertail. Soooo some are some aren't. Sifo, many of the bikes you can convert to under slung exhausts through the aftermarket. They are available.

True, but... Typically the aftermarket is an off road use only exhaust. No cat and much smaller in volume and not DOT legal. Packaging it all up that will satisfy the government is a whole different can of worms. Some of those aftermarket cans may also reduce ground clearance. There is no free lunch. Unless you are buying, in which case, I'm on my way...

They arent pods. They appear to be but its only a shroud on the sides of the radiator. The radiator is to front of the bike.

Funny, I didn't notice the "pods" at first. I noticed the exhaust and read the part that said "Shifting the centre of gravity downwards and forwards compared to the old high-mounted exhausts, the new pipe helps with mass centralisation and is key to the claimed handling improvements of the new machine."
