Don't confuse people wit facts .I remember reading an article back in the 1980s about the Kawi KZ1000 police bikes and how they were prone to a high speed wobble.They went on to say because of this problem the CHP were switching to H.D. police bikes.I beleave now they are on Hondas. |

Just like all the 99 Twin Cam bikes had bad cam chains. I put like 50,000 miles on mine, then got paranoid and had them changed out. They were like new still. I had them changed to the newer ones anyway, they were free and we were already in there.
In 73,000 miles I had a crank shaft positioner sensor go out at aprox 55,000 miles.
That's it! What a pile. |

Honestly, my '03 Wide Glide was the most trouble free bike I've owned. |

I've never owned a Harley or a Honda so I can say with experience that I don't know S**T about either!!! I'll just stick with my Buell.  |

Its one thing to pay 2 or 3X more for an American product, but when the costs are similiar, why not keep our money in out country?
I say that because I just had a conversation yesterday with a friend regarding USA made clothing. Unfortunately there are a lot of brands that do denim for $250+ dollars a pair of jeans. Cant see the extra VS my $50 Levis.
But when we're talking motorcycles and its NOT a huge cost difference, I dont see why the change.
If there is a true fault with the motorbike, sure, I understand, but to save a couple bucks...nah. |

I agree about the cost vs. country of origin argument. Businesses need to be competitive or they need to go out of business. I won't buy an inferior product that costs more simply because it is made in the US. That's rewarding mediocrity, and that is antithetical to capitalism. |

If the quality is the same, I will pay a little more for a US made product. Not 2-3 times more though. That indicates a poorly run business that is destined to fail. |

I can't open the link to the article, does it say what model Honda they will use?
Several police forces used to use ST1300's here and they also had stability issues. Some forces restricted there use to parade and escort duties, and I think they were limited to use under 130kmh.
FJR1300's and Beemers seem to be the thing with Brisbane police at the moment. |

My '05 FJR was an overall good motorcycle except for MASSIVE radiated engine heat issues, to the point of literally burning my lower legs at times.
The paint was "fragile," too, the worst of any bike I've ever owned - you could scratch the finish just by looking at it.
Rear tire consumption was an issue - to have kept this bike would have required finding a tire sponsor.
The engine heat was the deal-breaker, though. |

Police bike duty is far worse than most of us subject a bike to. Riding around in the city, constant stop and go, not the most forgiving environment for an air-cooled engine that lacks forced-air cooling. |

I agree in principal.
That said, I logged 12k on the FJR before I offed it, and have 65k+ on the Road King. I'd take the RK without hesitation for in-city police duties.
THAT said, I have no experience with newer FJR's or newer H-D Big Twins, so obviously no experience with any engine-related heat management issues they may or may not have.
My FJR was a good motorcycle.
The RK has also been a good motorcycle, and the better of the two, IMO.
Your mileage may vary. |

I'm with the SM idea too.
When I was 17-18 and weighed 110 pounds, there was nothing that could catch me on my KLR250 in the city. |
