My dog is a rescue. He's part English Setter and Boarder Collie.

The original owner decided that he didn't want puppies so he threw Sherlock and his brother against a wall. Sherlock survived with a badly broken and permanently disabled front leg, the brother died. The wife of the dude turned him into the police. We adopted him about 2 weeks after.

This is really tearing me up.
We found this guy walking down the street a few weeks ago. He was half-starved and looked pretty rough but he came right up to us and let me load him into the back of my truck. He's got some superficial scarring and one ear that's been cut (long-ways not cropped). At first I thought the ear might have been torn from a fight but its too clean. Some one cut his ear all up as a way to mark him... or just to be cruel. Despite this he's a really sweet and friendly dog. He's got along great with my other dogs when they met, although he tried to hump Shelly.
The bad thing is that with our dog and two other foster dogs we just don't have room for the new guy who we've started calling Happy. ARF, the rescue we foster through, isn't taking in any more male dogs right now unless he has a foster home. And although our county shelter says it is "no-kill" that doesn't apply to pits. In fact they won't even adopt out pits so giving him to the "shelter" is pretty much a death sentence. I thought we might have a couple of different people that would take him but they've backed out without ever coming to see him.

Wow, dude- just LOOK at that face!

Hang in there with him- something will work out... once Mark checks in, Happy might end up his new "furkid"!

My boy Yukon...

If it isn't his tennis balls (very OCD with those), or his deer antlers he'll sleep with his Kong. But, he'll sit there forever with the thing in his mouth. I don't know how he does it, that would hurt my jaw!

I finally went back to the park and everything went fine. Although my bloodpressure was thru the roof while driving there, I almost turned around. But we had a great run and ran into a couple other folks. One guy had a little dog and had the same problems as I with the same dog. I am only going back there 1-2x a week now. (till "I" cool off)

I had a few nightmares the past week or two since the incident that I won't go into.... and OH...Wolfridgerider, that pic you posted of your pooches didn't help much!! lol.. They do look like fun/happy dogs.

NotPurple, yes I hope your are right and your story sounds similar. I do watch the Whisperer and have used some of his techniques with other dogs and they work great (no expert here either) but I had very minimal experience with any type of pit. I only actually touched one for the first time 3 months ago at a petsmart store.

The mix at the park was actually very friendly to me and I treated it like I would any other dog. It was a nice looking Pitmix, I hope it and its' owner are able to learn for the future. (me too I guess)

We were finally able to find a pit friendly, no-kill shelter for Happy. Given his friendly nature and gentle disposition I think he'll find a good home in no time.

Most interesting things have been how much better facilities in NZ are for dogs - open space and dog parks etc, compared to Australian sad lack thereof.

Also that caution of snakes is in their DNA. Gone from a land with none - to one where they are reasonably common and the first time he met one he knew the drill.

Well folks- after that video just above, I really hate to post this...

Sunday, my gf's dog (ours) was attacked and killed. We live right next door to a small neighborhood park- just a little thing, mostly arboreal, with a basic swingset, two benches, and a nice picnic pavilion. Our regular routine is to sit outside under the dogwood trees in the afternoon, with the dogs, and just relax. Our newest dog, the Basenji, has to be put on a cable to keep him close, but Chloe- my GF's dog- was always the very rare type of dog that just wanted to be with us, inside or out. She really hadn't been on a leash in over 6 years, unless we were going away from home.

She was perfectly content to stay right by us all the time unless- she saw a squirrel, or a small kid, or another dog. And, if she was tempted to go after them, she almost always responded to voice command. Truly, she was one in a million, about 10-11 years old, two when my GF rescued her from the shelter.

Sunday we had had a really great day- canning homemade hot salsa, pear jam, doing stuff around the house, beautiful weather, getting ready to cook some salmon and potatoes. The bitterest irony of the day was that a guy had been here all afternoon laying the string line prior to installing my new chainlink fence...

I was having a beer, facing away from the park, watching hummingbirds drink and fight, both dogs at my side... my neighbor had been visiting and just left... my GF then goes inside to check on the potatoes for dinner. Before I could react, Chloe bolted toward the park, directly at two people walking Great Danes. All Chloe wanted to do was meet/greet/sniff, then head right back...

In less than 4 seconds, the end had begun,.. The Danes went into defensive mode, lunged, flipped and pinned her, then tore into her. As fast as I could, I dove into the melee, tackled one dog- the owners just couldn't control such huge dogs... Chloe got away, ran into the house, basically bleeding out- my GF finally got her, wrapped in a towel, and sent me to the pet ER with her...

I drove her car with Chloe in my lap, in terrible pain- got to the ER just before 7 when they open... thankfully the folks let me in right away. As I'm waiting for my GF and her best friend to get there, DRENCHED in blood, the doc says her intestines were severed in at least 2 places, she'd try to patch her up, but didn't know about her other organs...

Upon further investigation, she was too far gone. I held her as the sodium pentothal was administered.

We buried her yesterday, both of us taking the day off to do so. Today my GF is back to work, I'm supposed to head to work myself this evening, but will try to bow out if I can. As I type this, I'm having to face the new "normal" of not having Chloe at my feet, under the desk. When my honey gets home, she'll have to face this as well- I'd like to be here if I can.

As I type this, 48 hours after the fence perimeter was set, my guy is beginning the install.

Damn.

Question: Although I know my dog was off leash and the Danes weren't, what should happen as far as liability goes? I KNOW the answer, it's on me, my dog was off leash. But if you can't control your dog even if it's ON a leash, don't you carry some blame? These people are new to the neighborhood- the guy doing my fence was referred to me BY these folks, and I genuinely believe them to be good people...

My concerns now are as follows: What about the dogs now? They've tasted blood and slain our beloved Chloe. I've heard that these were "country" dogs before moving here, so it's likely they had plenty of chances to kill there. What could happen in the future? These folks have children of their own, what if one of them comes in with a Batman costume for Halloween, and the dogs react? It's one thing, horrible as it is, to lose a dog, but what about the risk to the neighborhood kids?

Second: As a result of this, I'm out $550 paid to the ER for all they did, and I brought Chloe home in a cardboard box. Plus, losing a day of work for me and my GF. Let's just call it $800ish. Shouldn't they at least offer to help with this? The guy is a nice guy, can do carpentry work he says- at the VERY least, maybe help me finish stuff around the house? I'd much prefer some $$$ compensation, but who knows?

As futile as it always is, I'm now playing the "woulda/coulda/shoulda" game...

Once again, I HATE to have to post this, much less deal with this reality, but I'd appreciate the advice.

Thanks, my friends.

Brad, I hate to hear this. Its one of the things I fear owning the dogs that I own. But, you have answered your own question.
The Great Danes did what any loyal dog would do. They protected their master/family.

Mark, you're 100% correct, they did what most any good dog would do- had it been ANY other breed, surely it would've been different. These dogs are as big as small HORSES for Chrissakes, no one short of Shaquille O'Neal could jerk one back and control it in this situation.

I'm fully aware that like me and my honey, their dogs are truly FAMILY to them- bottom line is that their kids killed OUR kid.

And that's what I'm really concerned about, especially as we approach Halloween- next time it might not be just a DOG.

Lord knows I'll not approach them and just say "Put them down", we're talking about "furkids". I really believe they should be returned to the country where they came from, or given over to a Great Dane rescue, or... I dunno.

The house they're renting has a 5' fence by the street- a joke to these dogs- but they're kept behind the house in a more secure area apparently. First time I saw these dogs, they were with their owners in the side lot by the road getting a bath- when they saw me and my new Basenji buddy coming, well, they alerted, LEANED OVER the top of the fence barking... we turned around and went the other way!

My neighborhood, in the city, with all the kids and other dogs around, IS NOT the place for these dogs. There are 3 of them, 2 of which killed my Chloe- they really should go.

I'm hoping to have a civil discussion with the owners ASAP, calm and rational, and see if we can somehow make progress here. As I mentioned, they seem to be good peeps- but of course, things have changed.

Also- I've tried and tried, but I can't seem to get the hang of posting pics here, and I'd dearly love to for both my new buddy and for my dearly departed... maybe someone can take an email from me and do the conversion. Littlebuggles mentioned this possibility, and it's WAY past time for me to do so. I'm running the latest Ubuntu OS, not Windows, maybe I can boot up the GF's Windows OS and do it through her side of this 'puter. If anyone can help, it would be dearly appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words, friends.

I'm really sorry for your loss. It always hurts to lose a dog and I imagine losing one to a violent end is even worse.

That said, asking for compensation for your vet bills would be pretty bad form since your dog was off leash. It would also not be a helpful thing to add to a discussion of thier dogs behavior. No matter how you approach it, telling them that you think thier dogs are dangerous will not likely be well recieved.
In fact if they are really nice people and do offer to help you out with the bills I wouldn't take it. What I'd suggest is that you try to persuade them to get further training for their dogs. If you can offer them the names of some good trainers in the area, that might help too.

The fact that they've been free-roaming dogs in the country doesn't increase the likelihood of them biting a child or person. I grew up in the sticks where nearly everyone's dog roamed free. Our dog was constantly chasing squirrels and killing armodillos but he never bit a single person, and he was a pitbull. If they've hunted before they may be more likely to see small dogs and cats as prey and be more deadily in those encounters (this should be the focus of their training) but that doesn't translate to kids = prey.

I had a great dane and yes they can be a hand full and they can scare the crap out of people simply due to their size. But they're typically very gentle natured and aren't usually aggressive.

Yes, I know, the law is the law, but- you'd have to SEE the scenario- all I or my GF had to do was forcefully call her back with a verbal command. The park is literally NEXT to my property line, and we've gotten in the habit over SIX YEARS of just saying "She's friendly..."

Of course it's against the LAW, and it's ON ME.

"asking for compensation for your vet bills would be pretty bad form since your dog was off leash."

"In fact if they are really nice people and do offer to help you out with the bills I wouldn't take it."

Purple, are YOU made of money? I had prepared to cover the costs of HAVING MY PROPERTY FENCED, along with my regular and incidental bills. I've lost my "cushion" and then some, and I make my living ONE dollar at a time, as a restaurant server. I am at a higher-end place, enjoy it, but I'm facing a hard last end of 2012 financially.

If it were me, and I had 3 Great Danes, and I were walking them IN PUBLIC, I would by GOD ensure that I could CONTROL them.

These folks haven't knocked on my door since minutes after the incident. Had it been ME, Id've been here last nite, asking about the dog, and what I could do to help.

In our litigious society, I get it, but it doesn't make it right.

If you want to walk your Great Danes out in public, you'd DAMN well better know how to CONTROL them.

I fully intend to talk with them about the fact that their dogs ARE AGGRESSIVE, and have TASTED BLOOD. Hopefully they realize now that they CAN"T CONTROL THEM- but I'm prepared to TELL them that and face the music.

It's on ME that our dog died, and I didn't do enough to save her. If a 7YO kid shows up to trick or treat in a costume, and I don't at least discuss this, and they get maimed or worse...

Those dogs are pretty young, and plenty strong. Their owners COULDN'T control them in public. Yes, my dog was off-leash in public, but totally dependable for voice command. I DIDN'T REACT IN TIME.

It's on me. At this point in time, I don't seek revenge or retribution, but my momma raised me to do right. I have no idea if in return, folks will do right by me.

Please don't be upset. I meant that since they're not legally bound to compensate you ( as far as I know) I think it would be better to ask them to spend any money they offer on training for their dogs so that this situation doesn't repeat itself.
I almost didn't post anything cause this is just a bad situation all around. If they're decent people at all I would imagine they feel terrible about what happened but they probably don't want to be told that their dogs are blood thirsty.
The only point I wanted to make is that you might want to stress to them that they should look into training to help them control their dogs. This is something they should really be concerned with since they're dealing with very large animals. And just because they attacked your dog, who friendly or not was rushing them, doesn't mean or that they're bloodthirsty. Dogs that have fought and even killed other dogs can be trained or rehabilitated to be good dogs.

I'm sincerely sorry if my post offended. That is the very last thing I intended. You have far better knowledge of your neighbors and their dogs. I only have your post to go by and was trying to offer advice. I really hope that things are resolved peacefully between you and them and their dogs. And again I am truly sorry for your loss.
