What can I say??? I love bikes!!! I've been considering adding another one to the heard...which would make four horses in the stable. I already have the '06 XB12X and two track bikes( '85 RD350LC aka rz350 and this winters salvage RC51 rebuild project); I am left with only one street bike which fortunately it is the great Ulysses do-all. I have always enjoyed having a choice of two or more bikes to use for street. Previously I had a plated XR600 and a GSXR600...perfect: XR for city; GSXR for backroads, then sold XR and bought Buell...that put GSXR on city duty (which was excellent) and Buell was reserved for long hauls and trips to the mountains ( I feel as if the XB prefers the extended runs over the short...>15mi trips.) Now I sold the GSXR and rode around a 200cc dual sport for summer commuting. now summer is over and dual sport is gone, but I need a good solid street bike for blasting through city streets. I have a guilty conscience as I rip on the Buell 5 min after starting, only to cut it off a few miles later. long story short...I WANNA KEEP CITY WEAR AND TEAR OFF OF THE BUELL AND HOLD IT FOR A WHILE (+10YRS) AND I COULD USE SOMETHING TO RACK UP MILES ON AND STILL ENJOY THE RIDE. I've seen many examples of the Superhawk 996 engine approaching 100,000 miles and even a handful with that have rolled 100k and are still running strong...Its a Honda! My only reservations would be the horrific mileage and fuel range of ~ 120 miles, but for a city and light backroad, bike this would not be a problem. I found a good one for sale locally and my wheels are spinning. Sooo...as one may observe...I am on the fence! Let me know what yall think. Good street bike/commuter??? overall i am just looking for a comfortable, reliable, enjoyable street bike that would be the opposite of a road tripper. I know i'd enjoy something simple like a newer (+02) SV650 but man that 996 sounds so good...yeah I already took the 996 for a spin and its nice, but is it the one??? | ||

Go for it! Remember...."Buyer beware" though.A couple years back i fell into a deal on a Ducati ST2 commuter on a whim.Been fighting a terrible electrical GREMLIN ever since.An extra $1200 in electrical parts and still not isolated.So..BEWARE.I have a 996 too...but in Ducati trim.Good luck | ||

A 996 is for sure one of the very few Honda's I would love to own. Like you say, awful fuel mileage and range, but it would be a fun toy for sure. I'm guessing that you could ride it quite a while and then sell it and not really loose much value either. I'd say it is already a classic. | ||

I had a chance at a good deal on one a couple years ago. I almost jumped at it. There were two things that made me say no to it. Fuel mileage and range. You may already be aware of those issues.  They tend to be great bikes if you can live with that. | ||

Bobhorse... if you can get a good deal on a Superhawk, jump at it. You will not be disappointed with the performance. I owned a 2005 and put 10k miles on it before selling, due to fear of losing my license. The rest of the badwebers posting about the range, it's not a Buell, you're not going to get 50+mpg. Remember the mileage the 1125's got when they first came out, everyone was crying, but I'm sure it was a beast. Range of about 140 miles and mid 30's to 40mpg is about the best you will do on a Superhawk, but the bike will eat your lunch way faster than any Buell if you're not careful. The bike's speed and power sneak up on you. I loved the bike, but it riding it the way I was had "go to jail" written all over it (175+ mph stock). Do it! | ||

Jp, are you thinking of the superhawk, or the blackbird? 175 sounds pretty high for a stock SuperHawk, though I suppose it is possible. | ||

Speaking of the Blackbird. It is rumored that Suzuki named the Hyabusa (Japanese name for the Peregrine Falcon) because, supposedly blackbirds are a favorite prey item. I don't think Kent Stotz got that memo. | ||

I do know from a buddy, that if your blackbird rear sprocket bolt backs out, the blackbird makes a *very* effective aluminum router. (And that replacement blackbird swing arms require a special tool to install...  ) | ||
