quote:

In 1979 a small block version of the air-cooled V-twin designed by engineer Lino Tonti was introduced as the V35. Radical when introduced, the design featured horizontally split crankcases and Heron heads. The former was a common feature of contemporary Japanese motorcycle design, whilst the latter was widely used in car engines. Both features allow more efficient mass production and also the design of the engine and associated components cut the weight from 548 lb (249 kg) of the contemporary 850 T3 to the 385 lb (175 kg) of the V35. The power of the original V35 at 35 bhp (26 kW) was competitive with engines of comparable displacement of the period – later larger versions (V50, V65, V75) were rapidly outclassed by competing water-cooled engines. Notably, the Breva and Nevada today feature a descendent of Tonti's V35 engine: the 750 cc V-twin, rated at 48 bhp (36 kW). With its ease of maintenance, durability and even, flat torque curve, the engine design remains suitable to everyday, real-world situations.

Check out Wild Guzzi:
http://wildguzzi.com

another resource is:
http://forum.guzzitech.com

You'll find people who have a lot of knowledge, and are willing to share it.
Watch out, though; Guzzis can be addictive.

The one you are looking at is the V50.

Not considered a 'classic' guzzi but hence cheaper to buy than the collectable Le Mans etc.

Underpowered, and has the usual early '80's Italian cheapo electrics etc.

I wouldn't spend a fortune on restoration as you are unlikely to make the money back, but a good little 'semi classic' runaround for that price : )

"Actually, I'd LOVE a Ghezzi/Brian Norge"

That sounds like a collision between an Italian tractor,a Bimota and a Gold wing.

I have an M2 so I'm well placed in the cool roadster department, but if you said to me "Here's a blank cheque go out & buy the most beautiful motorcycle you can get." I'd be straight down to the Guzzi dealers for a Griso.

Have you ridden a Stelvio very far yet Grumps?
My least favourite of the current batch of large dual Sports. Almost the anti-tt in some ways.

I agree about the Griso or any of the 8V units though. I quite like the V7 too and the Bellagio is an excellent cruiser.

Dave,
What don't you like about the Stelvio? Have you ridden the new NXT? IT's on my list of bikes to give a try when the Uly is ready to be retired. I like the adventure bike platform, but really can't stomach $22k for a GSA...

YMMV buuut....

Minus.
Uncomfortable.
Seat felt like it had the TT's Iron bar about half way back. Only allowed one 'nuts on tank' position.
Bad buffeting off windscreen at any of the standard adjustments.
Worst of the engine's vibration right at 65-75mph.
Power to weight is not very good. You really have to thrash it to make it wheelstand or get the front end light.
Some Guzzis (I've tested) fit and finish not as good as other manufacturers.

Plus
Very Good handling on the dirt. Not bad on the road.
Good engine when spooled up for dirt. But you have to keep it revving.
No torque steer.

Personally I'd buy a GS, a Tiger, a Tenere or a V-strom before one.

And as noted - there are a few Guzzis I still dig. Some of those V7's are sweet units. Griso very tasty.

Sorry man - was that you sent me the PM - I'm still working through my in-box.

No knowledge on the Honda sorry. Since I moved back to Aus my bike testing has wound right down. Doing an occasional Harley piece, but mainly back into being a graphic artist these days.

Buellish - re: the bag mounts... These are for the bags that were the "official" factory accessory soft bags - they're marked "TeKno" on the sides.

As you can imagine, the bags are pretty triangular in shape to stay clear of the mufflers. Even though mine has aftermarket cans (Mistral) the factory one's had similar angle. Anyway, as such they are quite small - they expand nicely in width but with the triangular shape there's only so much you can do...

They are a piece of cake to take on and off, which is the best part of 'em.

Dave, I had a Stelvio out for an hour last week, & after the Buells it was very comfortable, I found it fit me nicely.

Apparently the solution for the "nuts on tank" problem is to set the seat on a lower setting at the back & a higher at the front.

I'm not likely to be doing much dirt riding with it so that part of it doesn't bother me really.

As you say about the screen though, it is ****ing loud, noisier than either of the Buells & will have to be modded or replaced with something better.

As for the competition, I want shaft drive, my budget won't stretch to a SuperTen or an Explorer & the BMW while being an all round excellent tool I find soulless, not to mention way overpriced.

A used Stelvio ticks my boxes & floats my boat at a price I can afford.

As for soul-less - we obviously have different definitions.

I'm not a fan of the GS-A. But the GS is an absolute hoot.

Has a noisy windscreen too.

Dave doesn't like Guzzis; I really like them. In the past three years, I've managed to put over 40,000 miles on my Norge, and still love it. It's dependable, handles well enough (though not nearly as well as my Buells did), gets reasonable fuel mileage and it has panache. At 40 K, it's tied for 1st place as the most dependable bike I've owned in 44 years of riding.
