Military.com is a great informational website for Vets. (not a political rag)

Headline from Military.com. news section.

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2012/09/20/gop- senators-block-veterans-jobs-bill.html?comp=700002 3317843&rank=2

THIS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE OF OUR VETERANS!

Indefensible!

Good Spin
Another FDR program they dusted off and tried to make smell new.
The Title of the bill is sure to be Jobs for Vets.... wtf is the exact text.

We should all be aware at how the titles of bills are just a PR shill for a knee jerk reaction and hope that you only read the Dec page and not the Full Content of the bill.

And both sides of the aisle are guilty of this cr@p.

From the linked report:

quote:

Republicans said the spending authorized in the bill violated limits that Congress agreed to last year.

This bill had Bi-Partisan support, and the support of Senate's Republican and Democratic leadership. It would have passed.
It was blocked by a small group of extremists! They used a procedural maneuver to kill the bill.

We have LOST this chance to HONOR our Veterans with something beyond words! This bill was something good for our Veterans! Period.

My niece just got the letter.
It seems as though the Army feels she is unfit for duty.
She was just promoted to Sargent not 6 months ago.
She is was in training to be an LPN.
Who knows what she'll end up doing now.
I just hope she's seen enough of the real world not to go back to the mill town from whence she came.

The vets should be treated better. We (and they) should fix it, and elect a president that is capable of leading well enough to actually produce a budget. With a budget, we can then decide what we can and can't spend.

Union Man When I was a union contractor we had a national helmets to hard hats program We didnt get any one to sign up they all want to go college not the trades. My dad is using his Va Benes
They take excellent care of him like Reep said look at the meat of bill not just its name. I am very pro vet but we need to pass a budget so we know what we are spending where and why. Clean up the mess and we should be able to give the vets better benefits.
Now did you say any thing when obama put in a CO pay for active duty dependants???

We have come to expect the cuts in the military after each war. ( notice that the entire US Army GWB was handed by WJC is smaller than the Army Deployed by GHWB in Desert Storm )

We have come to expect the troops getting screwed over.

This is the first time we have screwed over the troops, and cut the military WHILE THE WAR IS STILL ON.

( not that there is a war....oh no, this is a "police action".... no, that's how they screwed my dad and the other Korean War vets... It must be a "man made disaster" with "overseas contingency operations"...... )

( Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" is based on the what-if the Troops revolted after being screwed over, again.. Ignore the bad movie, the book is a classic, should be required reading. Especially for recruits. )

Because of the vital importance of the upcoming election which will determine the fate of America for the next century, I choose to remain focused on the Romney/Obama threads. This thread is a distraction. YMMV.

I can't speak for other vets, but I can speak for myself.

I don't need handouts. I will use all the opportunities given to me, of course, but a billion dollar program that is turned down in a time of tremendous deficit is hardly a slap in the face of veterans IMHO.

Many military people, at least in the Infantry, are not content to let Uncle Sam help them out every step of the way. We fight for what we want.

Glitch, congratulations to your niece!

I got "the letter" last summer. It's been almost a year since I walked out of the entry control point for the last time.

I don't blame the government in general for my job loss - cuts needed to be made and still need to be made. It would be nice to see cuts made across the board instead of focusing on DoD, but my perception of the situation may be skewed since the DoD cuts are the ones that most affected me. I also blame Navy leadership for what I see as an unfair and unnecessary focusing of the budgetary cuts on a specific group of sailors, but that's a topic for another thread. (the month I got my final denial letter, there were 38 applicants with my job rating and paygrade - 3 were approved to keep their jobs)

Your niece has a lot of benefits waiting for her on the outside. Tuition, books, housing, disability and/or vocational rehabilitation if necessary, healthcare in certain situations, etc.

I'm so glad to be out of a uniform as long as this administration continues. That being said.. depending on how things go in November I'm already chomping at the bit to sign on the dotted line for the Reserves.

If she plans on attending any type of school after leaving active duty, feel free to put her in touch with me. There are an endless number of benefits available out there. Some directly from the VA and some from other sources aimed at supporting veterans. Most people I see in my situation and your niece's situation miss out on a majority of what's available to them simply because they didn't know about it.

In response to Villar's comments, I'll also speak for myself. I'm out for everything I can get. Expecting my government to pay for services rendered (as was covered in the contract I signed) is not asking for a handout.
