https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2018/07/03/academic -journal-runs-hoax-article-about-conservatives-bat hroom-habits/

Published without the journal realizing it was a hoax.

Not the first, or last, time someone has faked a study for laughs and to show how nuts the field of study is.

I freely admit to bias here. As an engineering oriented guy, I often read articles from NASA or EAA on subjects that deal with solid, or fluid, real world applications. Might be truss stress analysis or laminar flow effects of wing root fillets, or even Coanda-Stine ambient athodyd designs. Might be stuff never built yet, or technology Otto Lilienthal considered state of the art....... But real objects.

The "soft sciences" OTOH often deal with pure emotional or mental concepts, which often manifest as an explanation for human behavior, and thus have observable effects.

I often consider them witchcraft, spells and rituals meant to change perception, or shape reality. Backed by beliefs untested, by their adherents. Or untestable.

I admit a bit unfairly. Jesuit theological arguments are just as faith based, and modern physics with dark matter/string/membrane/quantum theories can be just as untestable, but I have a little less cynicism.... ( don't get me started on dark matter )

Worse, from my viewpoint, fields like economics or sociology often ignore history, or their own experimental efforts, sticking with elegant theories ( in their opinion ) over observed reality. (Like dark matter. )

That's not "science" to me. One reason I was a Stephen Hawking fan was he was willing to announce one of his most famous theories was wrong, after it had been disproved.

As opposed to an economist changing his mind ( nigh unheard of ) and being considered a heretic or apostate.....

But, I could be wrong! ( There is new evidence of dark matter )

And they never are.

That seems to be all the difference in the world.

The dirty truth is no matter what they say, or how well their propaganda sells, the people in charge of Global Warming movements know they are running a con to steal wealth & power to control your life.

Otherwise there would be proposals that didn't involve taking your money and micromanaging everyone's life.

They know that nothing is going to solve a crisis that does not exist. But by golly, there's cash to be stolen!

I have a question for the Global Warming crowd.
What is the ideal temperature for the Earth?

If they can answer that we can move on to the next question.

Ideal for what/whom? Polar bears and ice caps? Or the rain forests? Maybe for us yokel human beings? Three target groups will get you three answers.

Maybe they want to see things go Jurassic again. What was ideal for the dinos?

Personally I suspect that "ideal" for homo sapiens will not be "ideal" for anything else on or of the planet.

Just a hunch.

Ideal? Look to history.

The last two long term (more than a century, long by human time ) warmer than now periods were the Viking Age of Exploration, and the Roman Republic/Empire around the time of Christ. ( feel free to look up dates. I find they bore folk )

Both were times of bumper crops, not many plagues or famines, population increases, lower infant mortality, in short, good times.

For Europe anyway. China too, but with political issues not related to climate.

OTOH, if you lived where Vikings raided, or were in the path of Rome's expansion, locally it could suck. For the regions now Russia and Eastern Europe, it was a time of increased trade ( Vikings ) and advancement in technology and culture. Ditto Rome.

Thus I conclude that 3-4 degrees warmer is "ideal".

But not if you live in already darn hot equatorial regions. Hawaii, ok, Syria, 1000 years ago, pre-Islam, not so bad. Northern Australia, Borneo, not so nice. Kenya in the highlands? Ok. Inland equatorial Africa? Not so much.

Contrast to about 500 years ago, during a cold period, with famine, plagues, Empires collapsing, trade disrupted, crop failures.....

Thus colder is bad.

Unless you live in Borneo.

But climate does not change uniformly. The hot places near the equator don't get the same rise or fall as higher latitudes. Not no change, but not usually disastrous.

In Northern Europe, everything in North America North of an arc drawn from Seattle, through Kansas, & up to Boston, climate change observed in the last 2000 years is major. The difference between prosperity & barely getting by, if lucky.

As to the Polar bears? Don't worry about them. They've already been through the historical changes I've mentioned, and much bigger swings before that.

In fact, one reason I'm not referencing 5000 year old happy warm times is the cold times killed so many people there is no written record.

Despite satellite surveillance, and centuries of searching for lost civilizations, we may yet find better records in some African/Asian/South American wilderness.

Or Nebraska. Some farmer probably already found Eldorado under a grass covered dune, and figured a fuss would just make planting late, so didn't tell anyone.

An old Roman law required a bridge builder to sit in a small boat under his new bridge, when they opened it for traffic and marched a Legion over it. Excellent incentive not to skimp on materials or engineering.

And, yeah, I have scrutinized my work a bit more closely when I intend to defy gravity with it.

https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2018/07/a mericas_junk_weapons.html

The XB-70 is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever made. Six, not eight engines, as the article says. The sole survivor of only two made is at the USAF Museum in Dayton. Well worth the trip.

What made the XB-70 unique? Wave lift. The original contract called for a plane that would cruise, subsonic, to the edge of Soviet air defenses, then dash in and out at Mach 3, slowing down to cruise home. The proposed planes were monsters. Giant fuel tanks with wings, stuck on the wing tips of a giant fuel tank with small wings & engines. Utterly impractical. Training flights alone would be ridiculous, throwing away into farmer's fields the cost & crop damage of two 737s crashing & burning each flight. Insane.

But at North American, home of the Mustang & Saber, they figured out a way for an airplane to surf on it's own supersonic shock wave. This let them cruise the whole way at Mach 3. The famous Soviet Mig-25 was developed to intercept the B-70.... and would have usually failed, burning it's engines out. Consider the only other airplanes on Earth that routinely flew that fast were the A-12 ( CIA spy plane ) and it's bigger, slower, two seat kid brother, the SR-71 Blackbird. Migs tried & failed to shoot either down. Repeatedly.

In the long list of great technology never purchased, the B-70 & F-23 lead the way as best stuff never bought.

IIRC the last flight of the Valkyrie was 1969. ( and set a speed record in the process? ) The Blackbird retired in 1998/99.

I have no idea what you saw. Possibly a homebuilt, like a Long-EZ or Velocity.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_Long-EZ

http://velocityaircraft.com

Rutan quit the plans and homebuilt aircraft business after a vindictive & famous lawsuit, where the jury found for Rutan but he decided to limit his liability by pursuing safer designs, like anti tank attack aircraft & private space ships.

The Velocity is one of a few stretches of the original VariEze by other companies. ( the Long-EZ, Defiant, etc. were Rutan designs )

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burt_Rutan

Probably the most famous was Voyager.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_Voyager

At the other extreme. The Quikie, a single seat designed to use an Onan RV generator engine. ( I helped a little to build one of those ) The Two seat version has a better picture on Wikipedia.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaled_Composites_ ARES

Another Rutan design & Another great plane Never sold....

Like the A-10, designed around A Big Gun, and using not so subtle asymmetry to solve the serious problems of having massive recoil & gun gas killing the engines. The Ares had the cannon muzzle on one side of the fuselage, and the engine air intake on the other. Seems weird, but done right, recoil is centered and the air doesn't care about human esthetics, just balance and flow.

If you find yourself in charge of a nation's air force, a fleet of these would make invasion of your country suicidal.

It would have been interesting to see what nicknames Ares would have if it had gone into production.

Edit: If you like time travel fiction, the Ares would be a great plane to send back to WW2, as nothing then flying could touch it, except the Me-262, which was faster, but far less maneuverable.

The nightmare scenario is if Germany has them, as they would be overkill on Soviet tanks ( the original mission ) and flying bombers over Germany would be nigh impossible. Maintenance would be impossible for avionics and engine, but fuel & ammo could be made.

Or if the English had them the Battle of Britain would have been over in a week, once half the Luftwaffe was shot down. ( if available in 1939, the War wouldn't even happen )

A 2007 rebuttal to the above website's opinions.

IMHO the author cherry picks two of many examples to "prove his point", and ignores everything else that doesn't. Also, his contention that "modern global warming" started in 1975, seems to be a combination of deliberate start/end point bias selection, ( explanation below ) and possibly outright falsehood.

Start/end point bias selection ( there are also other terms ) is when you pick two points on a larger chart/graph/dataset, to make your case. An extreme and obvious example is to pick sales on Black Friday as a start point, and February as an end point, to "prove" the economy is going to heck.

Less obvious, and common, is to just pick the years to give the results you want. Over a dozen years or more, it's highly likely that you can find a three to five year segment trending up or down. It's the easiest way to lie with statistics.

I suspect falsehood, because 1977 was the Year of The Ice Age in pop culture in the cover of Time, Newsweek, etc. '75 was in a cold trend, but iirc not the coldest. I could be wrong! But by 2007, the retcon was in full swing, and temperature records were being altered to make each year "the warmest year on record" and "cooling off" the 1930's & other hot years in deliberate fraud. ( multiple sources )

One of the problems of getting older is remembering the past, while frauds insist your memory was faulty and that the magazines you kept from ancient times, like 1977, don't say what they did.... "What are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes?" .

Also the cynicism from being lied to day after day for literally decades.

In the end, it gets down to this. I'm trained in statistical process control. I am supposed to be able to spot the well known cheats, just by looking at a graph, ( I'm out of practice and don't claim to be great at it ) for the real purpose of preventing faulty parts from getting through to assembly, where they can then kill people when they fail. Most of my career the cheats I was supposed to catch were internal to the company, but I also did hands on inspection & reviewed the paperwork on other company's product.

The Climate Cult has zero credibility with me because it's been my job to catch their kind of crap, and my avocation required extensive knowledge of weather conditions. ( glider pilot )

So I'm not a bicycle mechanic opining on 747 quality issues. I'm an aerospace quality control guy with a high hobby level aviation experience level in the subject at hand.

I'm not sure this article is 100% spot on, but I do agree with the idea that plastic straws are a very small part of the problem. If every little bit helps, it sure looks like Starbucks just took a step in the wrong direction though.

Last century, McDonald's went from plastic coated paper to expanded foam packaging for the bigger burgers. Saved the environment with a slow degrading package that used less long term plastic. Then it became unfashionable to use expanded foam & they went back to plastic coated paper & cardboard, which was more actual pollution, but acceptable to the greenies on emotional grounds.

It's often not about doing good, it's about feeling that you are doing good, and especially being seen or perceived to be virtuous.

Long winded rant on political types & church going only for show, deleted.
