Went to Norcross Georgia today to the British Car and Bike Fayre.They spell funny in Norcross.Lots of cool cars and bikes.Saw some stuff I've never seen before.Bryan Fuller of Fuller Hot Rods and Two Guys Garage was hanging out.Lots of pretty girls. Some nice old motors there. Out of all of them, the one I'd like to own most is the little Daimler Dart, or maybe one of the "Big Healey's", or the Aston, yes I'll have the Aston Please. One's I've owned, the Mini wagon, the ordinary mini, & there was a Jag XJ6 peeking into one shot I think. Did you get to smell inside any of them? it's a unique aroma in old Brit cars, I think it's from the carpets. | ||

I think that aroma is the burning Lucas electrics  I really need to do something with the TR3 I have sitting in my Dad's shed. Sell it or restore it before it rots away. I miss driving it but I don't have the time or a place to work on it ATM.  | ||

Grumpy,I did stick a nose where I could indulge the aural delights of old Brit car smell.My Grandfather had two '60's vintage Porsche's that had that same smell which makes me think your right,it must be the carpets. Cars I'd most like to own,that Daimler Dart caught my eye as well.I've long lusted after a TR6 or TR250.Going to these shows makes me miss my '55 Austin Healey 100-4.I won't tell what I sold it for,but the payoff didn't take me far. | ||

Lucas-'The Prince of Darkness' as they say! My wife found a '69 Austin Healey Sprite on craigslist a few months ago-needed work-got it on the road to re-sell,that thing is a HOOT to drive,don't know if we're going to sell or not. | ||

In high school(late 60's) had a English Ford van(Thames)and an extra one for parts.Rebuilt the engine in auto shop(was pretty cool to "learn" on it back then).Later on had a "68 Mini Cooper S...man what a hoot to drive and so much fun.Had Kosman rims,fender flares,10"trailer tires(couldn't afford the more expensive profile tires),glass pack with a boon tube exhaust,Toyota reclining bucket seats  ..really miss that car...that car could REALLY HUG the road.Use to "sneak up" on people on the sidewalk(yes it DOES fit on the sidewalk)and would shut it off,coast up behind them and hit the air horns .....really scared 'em...but all in good fun.It was interesting to see me(i'm 6'2") getting out of that car...still it was very comfortable to drive as i had the seat adjusted all the way back and my elbows resting on my knees.Always loved those cars before mine and to this day still love those original"Mini Coopers"...i even got a bit upset when they shoved off the road and down the steep ravine all three Mini's,out of the back of the bus,in the original movie"The Italian Job" with Michael Caine. | ||

Paul, when I was a kid we had a Ford Thames camper van. When it threw a rod my Dad picked up the engine from a Mk2 Ford Consul at the local scrapper & had an "Engine Swap party". As the lump was between the front seats it had to come in & out through the back doors slung under a scaffold pole. The thing flew with the new lump in & my Mum would regularly hit 80 with it heading to Scotland, Dad, preferring not to look would sleep. I'd ride the engine cover 'til it got too hot! Happy times. |
