Hey good folks- I'm in the market to get enough chainlink fencing to do my backyard, just found a deal on 230 feet of it, plus poles, hardware and 2 gates, for $700.

I'm JUST NOW positioned to begin costing things out, not done my "homework" yet, but this looks like a quick decision type of deal- opinions?

Is this a steal of a deal, or what? If so, I gotta JUMP at it today or early tomorrow, or miss out.

HALP!

how big is your back yard?
if its bigger than 50 x 60 you anit got enough

I know a small dog pen/run at slowes is on the order of 300$ retail, so initialy it sounds good.

how much is fence installed per foot?
I have done some small wooden fences its more work than you think...

We did 250ft from Lowes with everything for 800 and some change, so if you need it its not a bad deal.

I just got done walking it out with a couple of tape measures- just looking at the main area as a square, 45' each side and 40ish to the back- conservatively, it looks like we'd have well over what we needed with 230'- this includes poles, toprails, hardware, a walk-thru gate and a drive-thru gate. Talked with Homey Depot and Lowes, both verified that this is a good'un.

So far so good- just waiting to hear from the lady as to when the fence company is done with the removal job!

That sounds about right for a DIY job, hope you have some good friends and IMHO rent a gas powered auger if you need to dig more than two holes: )

...and remember it's easier to take material off the top of the poles once set than it is to put it back on.

Update: My last conversation with the seller was that she was waiting for her guy to finish the removal job, but that she'd take the CL ad down and let me have it all once her guy finishes.

WOOHOO!

Keep in mind that this includes the two gates, corner posts, carrier posts, top rails, tension rails, and all hardware. Basically it sounds like the whole enchilada!!!

She's a realtor, she and her hubby had some trees cut down, hence the chainlink had to come down anyway- hubby wants to get rid of the chainlink in favor of new wrought-iron fencing...

It sure is nice when things work out like this!

Yes, the next step is a Saturday rental of a power augur, recruitment of some buddies with a BBQ/beer feast, and a whole lotta elbow grease!

Gotta start watching those Youtube DIY vids now...

One thing I gotta figure out though- I know I've got a LOT of loose but fairly big rocks composing my backyard, just under the topsoil- would a power augur do the job, or should I think about hiring in a "good ol' boy" buddy of mine with his bobcat? I'll give him a holler just to hash it out...

Before you rent anything check out the hourly rate of someone who has a bobcat with an auger. I had a guy do 30 holes in about 30 minutes and it cost about the same as the tool rental except I didn't have to do any work and he was done before I would have returned from the rental yard.

That's kinda what I'm thinking too, Strok... this buddy has ALL kinds of equipment, and is the kind of fella who can fix ANYTHING mechanical. IMHO, a dying breed.

Always good to have one of those in your back pocket. So very few and far between.

Found that out just last night. Had the tread fly off my rear tire on the interstate and the spare hasn't been off since '92, no joke, so it was tighter than a mouses ear. Really jacked up the rear fender, called my buddy and he showed up with a torch and air compressor and got me back home.

Good advice!

Just got back with it all, 233' with all the fixins- SOMEHOW got it all lashed into and on top of my Nissan Hardbody- looked like Fred Sanford rolling home!

Now, the REAL fun part: Getting this stuff up properly here! I'm gonna watch some Youtube on this, call my friends- who's got experience here with installation of chainlink and the gates with it? Keep in mind that it'll be a 2nd hand install...

Hoping to call in some contractor buddies and feed them a giant BBQ picnic for their help- a job like this might be more than I should bite off and chew. Any idea what labor rates might be for this, average?

Thanks!

Get access to a couple of "come along's". They make tensioning the fence a lot easier.

Hey there buddy! Good to know that, Jeff!

At this point I do have a good friend on board to help me get all this junk installed properly- if anyone ever gets to visit Smoky Mountain HD, pretty much the whole dealership's displays and layout were his baby- the man has SERIOUS talent! Plus, next door at the Shed, that whole dang thing was designed and built by him too. Stuff so good I'm completely sure that HD bigwigs have been taking notes for a while now.

But- Jeff, if need be I'd love to put you up for the duration, plus hopefully do some local riding- you'd have to be careful though, the "launch" cliffs around here are a LOT higher than Wolf Pen!

Thanks again buddy- holla sometime!
