I have stood by my trusty Nova Pump for a while now but I think I am ready to move up to an automatic. I have my eyes set on a new Super Black Eagle II but really I shouldnt spend that much money. I am considering a slightly used gun and possibly a Super Black Eagle I. I also am considering a different brand gun but dont have a lot of different experience with guns. Both of my buddies have a Super X 2 and they are ok but they seem to have some issues and are picky about ammo. That may also be because they never clean their guns. I am looking for the saturn sc2 of the gun world. An often overlooked undervalued gun. any ideas.?

I found that when I am out pat hunting a semi-automatic is great for the second or third follow up shot as the bird flies away unscathed.

Benelli M1Combat or M2Combat...

Check my profile for a pic. There's nothing better for a combat shotgun. The M2 will run anything.

I don't know anything about shooting ducks...

Mossberg 500. Inexpensive and works well. With the standard barrel will shoot trap as well as my abilities allow. Home gun? Short barrel. Slug barrel for hunting. Can't beat it.

But I'd like a Benelli too....

Mossberg 930SPX is pretty nice. No issues in any of the ones I've played with. They make a field version too...

I picked up a well worn S&W M3000 shotgun with an 18" barrel from my BIL and it's a slick, stout shotgun.

I've had no problems with the Super X 2, nor has my Bro-in-law with his Browning Gold, ( mostly the same action...plus cut off switch and speed feed ) Both reduce recoil, nicely. Both digest cheap field loads and hard kicking magnums.

Gas operated guns require a little more cleaning. That's a given. They also kick less, usually......

An old Browning Auto-5 is harder kicking, but a joy to shoot, and a true classic. Haunt the used section in local shops... they are out there.

Not fond of the long recoil action used on Franchi and some other italian shotguns where the barrel recoils. The short action recoil operated ones, like the Auto-5 and some Benelli's I like just fine.

Most important is fit. Where safe, and being safe, ( confirmed empty, etc. ) shoulder and aim, eyes open & closed, and check the sight picture. Test drive if possible. ( many here enjoy busting a clay from time to time... ask! )

Correction, the Auto-5 IS a long recoil action..... so I have to say I like that one, but have not liked others.... ooops!

No Idea if this will affect your choice, but my Father carried an Auto-5 in Korea as a Navy Corpsman with the Marines. ( the N. Koreans did not follow any laws of war conventions, and targeted medics. He bought it at the PX.... in Korea.

Had a SPAS-12 for a while. Both worlds; Push a button under the fore-grip and slide it back or forwards, pump or auto, 9 shot. Take your choice. It was like the one in Terminator.

I tried the SPAS-12, worked fine, auto or pump and once you learn the drill, no harder than anything else. Heavy as sin though. I woudn't want it for upland bird hunting. ( a classic 20 ga. double for that... )

Mack' Prairie Wings has magazine extensions for many of the popular Auto's. http://www.mackspw.com/ItemList--Magazine-Accessories--m-698

Designed for high volume South American Dove/pigeon/etc. hunting, they are a little lightweight for tactical/zombie fighting if you plan on using your shotgun as a club. Other than that, function is just fine.

Tried one out on a Winchester Super X 2 Wild Turkey Federation special ( 24", rifle sights, Invector-plus choke ) giving 9 in the tube and 1 up the spout. Function tests were nominal. Maximum rate aimed rapid fire ( 2 3/4" field load ) at 50 yards ( Rifle target ) got 2 comments from watchers... "I've never seen a shotgun shoot that fast". My response, "It's a Winchester". The other observer.. after a pause..."yeah, but he hit it every single time". My response, "Thanks". His was the more important observation.

Most important is fit to you. while stock adjustments can be made, even on a classic wood and blued steel gun, and some of the high end guns come with cast and cant shims, a stock and gun combo that works with your build, style and eyes is the best start.

Off topic a bit... while searching for facts on various things ( still feel stupid on the Browning A5 mistake.. ) found this... times sure are different than in Chuck Connors's day.

im looking fairly strongly at this point at a stoeger m3500....anyone with any hands on experience with this gun...i know stoeger of old has a bad rap but since the benelli buyout i have heard they have turned around and this gun in specific has been pretty good. Its hard with gun reviews online, you see a lot of "my buddies stoeger wouldnt cycle anything" it is hard to find real first hand objective reviews.

Had a good friend take a brand new Mossberg 12 ga. pump out for the first time and it spit the magazine guts out... but that was last century. I wasn't there, so don't know if reassembly mistakes were the problem. Did give me a bad taste for Mossbergs. A Deer/bird combo from them worked fine, and I gave it away as a present... still works.

Also had my Brother in law mis-assemble his Browning gold and have the magazine cap pop off. a Plastic bit never meant to take recoil broke, and he needed to buy a new one. His was a rookie self created break, and the gun has been trouble free ever since. ( the cap has a ratchet system. click, click click.. He took it to the first click, and stopped with, simply, half a thread engaged. He knows better now. ) Lucky for us it was winter, and the spring & other bits were easy to find on the snow. The mag spring went further than most airsoft guns can.

I wonder if that "tri-rail" on the above lever abomination is plastic? If so.... I grok the garbage comment. Plastic rails are good for cup holders. Maybe a flashlight. Never a sight or laser.

TO be honest, handsome, to me, is a Ruger Gold, a classic Fox, pretty much everything on the rack at Turnbull.

Still, I have no problems with a good composite stock and stainless or weatherproof finishes either. I'd hate to drop a Win. model 21 in a gravel streambed because I slipped..... a century newer black on black shotgun? Swear words, but no suicidal depression.

http://www.turnbullmfg.com/store.asp?pid=19567&cat id=19872

Turnbull researched, and re-created the special heat treatment finishes on the classic shotguns, etc. Back before him, you would be told NEVER to take an old gun in to be refinished. Ruined the value. Now, at this shop and very, very, very few others, a quality restoration can make a gun over a century old look new, and actually raise it's value. ( and the few shops with as good a rep, send the metal bits to Doug to be redone.... ) Check out the before & after gallery.

I've got a 70's Remington 1100 that's been workin' quite well for me.

It's a fancy one

The Mossberg 930 is a good buy for the money. You also can't go wrong with Benelli autos.

I have owned and hunted with various Mossberg shotguns and never had a single FTF, or any problem whatsoever.

I also carried a Mossberg 500 Tactical for a year in Iraq, likewise, never a single problem. I do not have experience with any of their autoloaders however.

Scott: What is the new gun going to be used for? If you're hunting upland birds, a light 20 is easy to carry. If you're shooting ducks or geese, you want a 12 (or 10) ga. with 3-1/2" chamber for the heaviest magnum loads you can find.

I personally shoot a lot of sporting clays, skeet and trap. I've got an old Remington 11-87 and a Beretta 390 and they're both great 12 ga. target guns.

For upland birds, I usually shoot a Remington 870. I love 870's--they fit just about everybody, they're dirt cheap, and very reliable. I find the 12 ga. 870 is too big and clumsy for my taste. I've got 870's in 20, 28 and .410. I use the little ones mostly for shooting preserve quail.

I shot a Benelli 20 on a dove hunt in Argentina a few years back, and it was pretty much bulletproof (pun intended), shooting 1500-2000 rounds per day. It got so hot you couldn't touch the barrel, but it kept on shooting.
