Gee, it's been extremely WARM in parts of our beloved country.
KJV Revelations 16
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
And, hello, what's this? Washington DC without electrical power.
10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain
Perhaps Justice Roberts is sitting in the same darkness he was in while making his decision. Sir, perhaps God didn't like what you and those in the seat of the beast did last week. After all, it appears it was written....
I have no idea at all if God is ever on MY side, but shall strive to always remain on His.
There was always a pizza box lid in front of the radiator of the trusty ol' Saab Model 95, quick to warm up, and a way to terrorize the roads of North Pole, Alaska. My house was on Bradley SkyRanch at 9 Mile, Piper in the front yard, a really good water well, hand pounded to 38 feet, and God's own peace and quiet if the airplane engine wasn't running.
Owned several of the Model 95 wagons, and a Volvo 1800ES wagon. The Saab was a better fit. Took my Porsche owning brother-in-law over to a store one Saturday. As we parked he said, "Now I see why you drive this."
Petty sainthood certificate was in the glove box. Saabs were a "hobby" vehicle and the perfect pregnant lima bean automotive presence to annoy the unconverted masses at every turn.
I was hoping to get out to the specific NW this summer, but not sure it will happen. Wanted to take my oldest to that Red October enclave, Port Townsend, for a seafood dinner with a view, show him my old haunts, old house, and look up a couple of aging neo-bohemian former acquaintances for a chin wag about old times. Prolly won't. If we head West, I'll make it Anacortes for the seafood and invite you to join us.
let me know - If I am still here - the first round is on me if I am off continent - then it is indeed a religious experience ; off chasing divine dream
As I used to print very plainly on postcards sent to family and friends from various locations behind the ol' Iron Curtain, with no return address: Proverbs 26:11 (As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly). Thought it might get translated at the main post office for the amusement of the authorities.
Non-overlapping magisteria (NOMA) is the view advocated by Stephen Jay Gould that science and religion each have "a legitimate magisterium, or domain of teaching authority," and these two domains do not overlap.
You take a guess on HOW things work, and observe and/or experiment to see if you are right. If not, you change the theory. If you deny the facts, gloss over them, or fake the data up to match the theory, it's NOT science. It's politics/con game. ( many "religions" are con games to let/keep a small number of people in control/power. See Divine Right Of Kings )
The Greenies are now a protected Religion in England. A guy sued that he was being discriminated against, and the court agreed. I don't know what kind of pain in the neck he was at work. I've been a professional pain in the neck before ( Quality Control... the guy everyone hates except the end user ) So I reserve judgment on the fairness of the court's decision, while applauding it's accuracy in defining his belief system.
HOW is the purpose of science. WHY is for philosophers, mystics, Shaman, and con men. Often an authority is a combination of the above.
I'm perfectly happy with the idea of evolution, as defined as changes in life forms by natural selection. As an answer to how we get giraffes, tardigrades, etc. evolution fails to cover that, so it must be thought of as under construction as a theory. ( I'm pretty sure that Darwin's gradualism is wrong, and like the catastrophist view, but that is still far from a complete explanation as to how stuff happens )
Science is always, always, always incomplete and "evolving".
"The Science Is Settled" as a statement is a sure flag for a con. You CAN make that statement on a very limited subject.
for example: "Releasing fluorine gas at 100 deg C. and 30 psi, into a vessel containing methane vapors at 100 deg C. and 14 psi, you should observe an exothermic reaction. The science is settled. If you survive that or not depends on the amounts involved, the containment device used, and your distance from the burning laboratory."
Other than such very well defined macro events, "settled" is what science is NOT.
Religion on the other hand tends not to be subject to experiment, is often revelation of one form or another, and subject to interpretation. That does not mean it does not affect the human metabolism, emotions or thought process. It certainly does. Proving the "realness" of religion I leave to others. I'm not a shaman.
I have no problem with science guessing at the exact conditions seconds after the Big Bang. I doubt the accuracy possible on such theories, at this time, but it's an interesting subject.
The seconds preceding the Big Bang, however, are not, at this time open to scientific experiment. Exactly what Words were used, in which language, to create the Big Bang is beyond the reach, and purview of science.
I've often wondered ( as in awe, wonderment, not questioned ) that the simple description of the origin of the universe in Genesis, ( KJB ) matches pretty darn well with 20the century science. Considering it's an explanation for nomadic sheep herders using stone tools.
>>>HOW is the purpose of science. WHY is for philosophers, mystics, Shaman, and con men. Often an authority is a combination of the above.
Persig wrote about the Churches of Science and the Churches of Reason, having no room for the Church of God. Science evolves. Reason evolves. Religions evolve. God is God, gestern, heute und morgen. Appearing, per the O.T., as a burning bush to Moses, it seems unreasonable to me that God will appear to scientist, philosopher, or follower of any faith.
God is the constant throughout the written history of man, going back to "creation," which could have been "the big bang," as it covers the activity as written.
I, personally, have not been to Sheboygan, but have faith it exists.
While it's fresh in my mind, and completely off subject: Human beings are the only living thins that have a God and the only ones that behave like the don't have one. ~Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diaries
Anyway, infinitus is a long time, envisioned by a human mind. Will a mathematician or philosopher ever find that one ultimate truth to substantiate their calculations or favored theory? Perhaps. But proof of theories don't change God.
I'm of a mind with you on that I think...... Other than the obvious fact that both quantum mechanics and religion can both kill you dead... Or sustain and improve you.
I could give examples, but I'm sure you can think of a few.
splitting atoms to power my civilization, gain a further understanding of the universe, and making people happy all seem fine uses for QM & faith.
Buddy who just got his physics degree insists everything is little springs.
I, personally, have not been to Sheboygan, but have faith it exists.
Here is an excerpt from a site I've spent some time exploring.
"...Whether or not a religious model of belief is able to answer all the modern challenges presented by science or logic, so strongly do many men and women feel towards their faith that any deviation of discussion --even a few words--may cause them to dismiss totally any discussion of history, of the origin of certain beliefs and motives. As a result, it is sometimes impossible to have an open discussion with many individuals simply because they hold their beliefs so strong that not a single belief, nor word, nor idea is permitted to be discussed in terms of real history."
Nice links & a favorite clip. I'm grinning like a fox eating caviar from a tooth brush.
While it appears groups develop a consensus reality, the typical monomaniac on a mission who leaves a group, or works at its very edge to find new theories, eventually begats a new group.
If, for example, 99% of the mass in our solar system is in the Sun, radiated out as energy, then... wait. It's early. I'll make coffee, perhaps later re-entering the human space/time continuum to stare out the window while doodling in the margins of a manuscript on splitting atoms, splitting hairs, and splitting crankcases. . .
No,it's not the Bonneville Salt Flats, that jewel of God's Earth to which my vanity and lust encourage me to make a pilgrimage during the racing season. This is Salta, in Bolivia, a much bigger salt pan than B'ville.
Being at higher elevations does not necessarily put one closer to God, nor farther.
If one wants to reach out to the unsaved, God will present opportunities. ____________
That's it.
I'm taking it on faith that this self-same thread on the BW forum, being religious by title and nature, fulfills a small part of that mission. Like splitting atoms, hairs, and melons.
